WE 120 | Green under Water

This is my entry to @galenkp’s Weekend Engagement #120. I picked the first topic:

The Green Weekend

Share only two photos that focus on the colour green and write at least 300 words in explanation. It can be anything at all, but the main colour in your two images has to be green. Tell us about the place and situation, when it was and what you were doing there. You have to use your own images though.

Green under Water

This is the Guaquerí Park on Arismendi Avenue, Cumaná. It's the only park in the city, but it does not include a lake. The water you see is the result of heavy unusual rain. I used to come here a lot when I was a college student, Then, I stopped visiting when it became too dangerous. In the last years attempts are being made to make the park family-friendly and now different musical, sports, and other institutions are organizing all kind of activities here.

There a lot of green in this park, despite the poor handling of the natural resources. In the last years they have chopped many trees without a coherent replacement plan. I come here two days a week to teach English and I usually use one of these huts that are now under water. It has rained a lot lately (it usually does not in this part of the county). I had never seen the park like this.

Ironically, even if it ruins my classes (there are tons of mosquitoes) the park never looked wilder. You can’t tell from the picture, but there are hundreds of animals (iguanas, squirrels, birds) celebrating this pristine look.

The area under water used to be the playground for kids to run, practice sports, etc. it was excavated some years ago in an attempt to replant the grass, which had disappeared partially and was being replaced by all kinds of weeds.

Like most things here (when done by the government) the project was abandoned and the park was left with a bunch of holes and tree stumps.

I like this version of the park. It may not be good for teaching (especially before 9 am), but it is great to admire nature. Maybe someone will come up with some business idea and will offer boats for rent for people to navigate the park.
