Christmas Cheer

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today we did what we wanted to do for a few weeks and we got our Christmas tree! What better way to spend a Friday?!

‘Tis The Season

One of the favorite traditions we’ve started to do is not waste our day after turkey day at the stores but rather go get our Christmas tree! It brings a lot of good energy, fantastic smells and needed Christmas spirit in the house. It’s certainly our favorite time of year. If we have to endure the cold, might as well endure it with a nice tree in the living room!

The place we went last year was nice so we decided to go visit them again this year. It’s a small farm but they have a pretty good selection considering that the trees don’t really grow that fast! A former high school classmate of my wife works there as well, though we didn’t see him this year or at least we didn’t recognize him with the face condom on. Too much? Lol oh well.

There’s a lot of varieties of trees out there, balsam fir, Douglas fir, Canadian spruce and our favorite blue spruce. We got a blue spruce last year and it smelled fantastic for a long time and the thing held out damn well! We got the tree I think the same weekend last year and we had to cut it down at the end of January since we were going to Florida for vacation. It didn’t drop needles hardly at all, right up until the last day! We are hoping with good luck like that this year and we might have the tree through February, we shall see lol.

There were some pretty cool hills and decent shots with the camera so I definitely took a bunch! Definitely some scrawny trees but that’s okay, sometimes those ones grow up and fare much better when they are older.

This was the gem we picked out! It was a good height, nice and rotund and it was in good shape overall. No bare spots really so we snatched it up. One thing I was a little disappointed in is they don’t let you cut it down, they have their workers cut them down. I like getting under the tree, getting a mouth full of needles and swear a time or two trying to cut it with my reciprocating saw. I wasn’t going to cut it down with a hand saw, hell no. Bought a brand new blade in case I had to use my SawZAll on that bad Larry!

There was a great crowd of people at the farm. Due to the hysteria, they were limiting it to 40 cars at once but we waited in line for about 35 minutes to get in and the line was probably 20-25 cars deep behind us on the road! I love when there’s a lot of people who help support a small farm like this. Those grocery store trees are a bundle of dead pine needles that got cut down about a month ago so don’t get one of those trees if you can prevent it!

I was glad that the tree fit through the netting lol. This year as easy, you pick it out, they tag it, flip it onto a tractor bed and haul it away to get shaken to get rid of the bugs and dead needles, netted and put to the side. It was remarkable how quick it was, I barely got back to the car to get my gloves and they already had the tree waiting! It’s a cash only business which I loved, so here’s my 85$, but ol’ Uncle Sam will be told the tree cost 30 hopefully. Keep the profits folks!

They had ample amounts of twine so that was good. It’s tough on our car, there isn’t really that many good spots to tie the twine to so this year instead of tying it to the grill haphazardly, I tied it to the hood latch, the trunk latch and the four door latches. Not sure if that was the best idea, hopefully we didn’t mess anything up but we drove the back roads all the way home. I don’t trust going 60 on the highway with a heavy piece of pine tied to the roof lol

These were some odd pictures the little man took. We started to decorate the tree a bit but it was a little tough since the branches haven’t settled yet so we decided to put up the little fake tree and decorate that. The wife hates color lights but my favorite is color so we compromised and I got one set to put on the little tree. There were a heck of a lot of them so up the window they went, to make use of them lol.

The tree, when we finish decorating it, will be a mixture of white and blue, perhaps a little purple in there but we don’t know if we can find that color so we’ll see.

Who else buys their tree early?! Let me know! A picture of your previous tree would be awesome too lol
