My Last Date // The Weekend Engagement Contest

Going out on dates has never been my thing. In fact, I never witnessed success in trying to go into any relationship through dates. I think I have gone on dates with up to three ladies before getting to my final year at the university, of which none yielded the desired result. I kept wondering what the problem might be; is it that I didn't correctly follow the instructions from the YouTube video I normally watch a night before each date? Or maybe luck isn't just on my side!

As a result of the outcome of my previous dating experience, I decided to let go of it till I finish my undergraduate studies. However, everything was going on well till the second semester of my final year (400 level) when I met Helen. Helen just moved to my hostel. She was my perfect description of beauty, she has everything I like in a woman. I was so amazed the first time I came face to face with Helen on the stairs. For more than a minute, I was unconsciously staring at her, not knowing what to say or do. The thought of her didn't leave my mind throughout that day. I felt I had found a match.

Haven't followed most of the instructions from both YouTube and online relationship experts — which have yielded nothing, I decided to be realistic and handle this one all by myself. So one fateful day, I approached Helen and told her a bit of my intentions towards her. While still talking, she interrupted by saying, it would be a good option if we could do this in a bar or restaurant! I had no choice but to accept that I am cool with the idea, even though I have been strategic in trying to avoid the issue of going on a date with her. So I told her to choose a date, and let me know.

Weeks passed without any response from her. One fateful morning, I got a message via WhatsApp from Helen that she would like us to go on the date the next day (Sunday). She suggested Nadia Bakery (just opposite my school) and Mat Ice (a bit far from the school), all in Benin City, Nigeria. I decided to go with Nadia Bakery — at least I won't be spending much on transport. I wasn't having enough cash as at that period, but I felt I mustn't disappoint her, since she has finally accepted. I met guys, got some money from them. Was a bit confused on what to wear, but I finally settled with the black suit I used for my Internship (I.T) defence in 300 level. Took it to the dry cleaner in the afternoon to help me put it in place.

In the evening when I went to collect the clothes, I found out that the dry cleaner mistakenly burnt the trouser while pressing it. I was weak, and didn't know what to do. I felt God wasn't in support of the whole thing, and was about giving up. But he told me to use his customer's, since the date is that important to me. And that was how I went home with another person's trousers.

On that fateful Sunday, it rained from morning till around 4:00 pm. I thought we wouldn't still go on with it, but she called me around 4:52 pm asking where I was. Hmmm, I just had to start getting ready. On opening the door, there, she was in a red gown and glowing like an angel from heaven.

I sat down, told the DJ to play 'black is beautiful' by Flavour, and asked her what she cared for. She went for jollof rice and chicken, while I went for fried rice. We ate, talked about a lot of things, including our life, dreams, careers and so on. I really had a good time. In fact, that was the best date I have ever gone on and would be my last date.

Fortunately for me, it yielded the desired result. We started dating and are still dating. We have plans on taking the ultimate step in time to come. After that day, I felt fulfilled, felt like a man! 😅
