1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso Berlinetta

Bonhams will offering up a lot of great cars during its Bonmont sale this weekend in Swiss. But the star of the sale must be this iconic 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso Berlinetta with an estimated price between $US 1,500,000 and $US 2,000,000.

For the magazine Road & Tracks : "Driving a Ferrari smoothly is always easy, the Lusso is no exception". And the design is simply splendid with the inimitable Pininfarina style.

History of Ferrari 250 GT

The Ferrari 250 GT was presented during the Geneva Salon in March 1956. Enzo Ferrari wanted a new coachwork for his new road car (in order to finance his passion for racing cars) and asked to Pininfarina instead of Vignale, the most popular carrozzeria among Ferrari's customers. Huge success...

The 250 GT Lusso (luxury) was presented six years later during the 1962 Paris Auto Salon. It was designed by Pininfarina and built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti. Ferrari presented his new car like that (I like this presentation 😀) :

"This new luxury Berlinetta has been developed from the car which allowed so many gentlemen to enjoy sports car performance. It boasts those characteristics valued by enthusiasts while also possessing the comfort required by the ladies." (source : Bonhams.com)

During the two years of production, only 350 examples were produced. Indeed, Ferrari had difficulty remaining competitive with the previous version, 250 GT Berlinetta SWB, a versatile car for track and road. Too many differences between the two markets, so Ferrari decided to produce two version, one for the competition the 250 GTO and the other for touring the 250 GT Lusso.

This example (chassis n°5187) was the 154th built in 1963 and delivered in New-York with the color scheme Ivory with Nero leather interior. The car was fully restored in Germany in the 90's. In 2018, the Ferrari 250 GT Lusso finished 3rd to the Annual Concours d'Élégance in Swiss. A beauty 😀

This example is now finished in brown metallic over a dark beige leather. I love the interior, you want to be behind the wheel, non ?
