How exactly do people make money from stocks?

I know you can sell shares you own, but is there any other way to make money from stocks? If so, what is it? I'm no expert so I'd appreciate it if you could keep it simple.

There are many ways to make money from stocks. But what matters most is what you want besides "making money" which is a desire, not a goal.

The goals are: Retirement, Vacation of a lifetime, new home, very expensive marriage that your child is dreaming of, College Education, financial security, commerce as a business, etc.

Then, once you have a goal, and there should be more than one, then you can decide whether you should invest in: index funds, ETFs, or ETPs, individual stocks, dividend stocks, REITS, or whatever.

The stock market has almost any asset you might want to invest in as a derivative version of that asset.

Real estate is expensive with a large down payment. REITs are derivatives of the Real Estate Industry and provide income for investors.

Commodities are special investments and often are not really useful for individuals based on risk factors. There are Commodities Traded on the ETC Exchange for almost any commodity you wish to invest in or trade.

Some companies offer dividends which are income-generating investments.

You can invest directly in bonds OR you can invest in ETF Bonds or ETNs which are Exchange Traded Notes aka bonds. This usually takes into account an increase in income. ETFs make it easy to buy and sell index bonds easily and simply through the stock market. ETF Bonds are traded like stocks. Enter your buy or sell order and you will be executed fast.

There are also ETFs for anyone looking to buy Utilities, Municipalities, etc.

There is a young IPO with an amazing new migration technology that will be the next generation of big blue chip companies. The holding time is 10 -15 years or more and the benefits are staggering. Consider that AAPL was only $ 19.23 when I wrote about its potential as a stock back in 2003. If you hold on to 2021 and splits etc, you will have a huge ROI at this point. This type of investment requires more education and is not a recommendation service. If you find this great company that is new or reinvented, the hold is long but the ROI is huge.

You can trade cryptocurrency, bitcoin with ETFs now.

There is also Trading as a Business which is an IRS decision that retail traders can use the benefits of self-employment or owning a Sub S or LLC company or partnership and have the same rules and deductions and benefits of a professional independent trader.

With a proper education (not You Tube videos), Trading as Business status can be in the form of a career change, part-time job, or extra income for a stay-at-home parent.

Plus in this decade, there will be non-exchangeable and commensurate assets, tokenization, and lots of new assets to trade or invest in.

You can invest in almost anything through the stock market today and more and more derivatives are being made every day.

Think about whether the NEW Stock Market, which it is today, is the One Stop Investing or Trading Center of your financial world. You don't have to go to a variety of different financial markets. The stock market has almost anything you could possibly want to use to "make money."

Start with a goal. Then work out what type of investment is best suited for that purpose.
