On 27 July, the London 2012 Olympic Games began with a spectacular opening ceremony held at the Olympic Stadium in the capital.

A showcase of British culture and history, it included traditional ceremonial elements such as the hoisting of the flags and the parade of athletes, before being formally opened by Her Majesty The Queen. In typical British fashion, the UK Olympic Committee even pulled out all the stops to get #jamesbond and HRH Queen Elizabeth to take part in a Quintessentially british short film:

For the Olympics, the Royal Mint minted 29 new 50p designs in 2011 to mark the 2012 London Olympics with a coin design for each Olympic sport. These have become incredibly sought after and its believed 90%+ of all circulated coins have been removed by collectors. So to find one in your change is getting harder and harder.

Some of the lower mintage coins, such as Football(above), Judo, Triathlon and Wrestling can achieve £8 to £15. For a full set in good condition you should expect to pay £65 to £70 on eBay. With a mintage of just 1.125 million, the Football 50p is the rarest of the Olympic coins and is widely sought after by coin collectors due to its scarcity

The offside rule 50p coin depicts a midfielder deciding to pass to either one teammate on the left, listed ‘offside’ or the other teammate that’s on level with the defender, listed as ‘not offside’.
