๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ๐Ÿฆ‹ The Picasso Moth ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ๐Ÿฆ‹

Yesterday I blogged about the adorable silver dik dik, the world's smallest antelope, about the size of a household cat. Feel free to click here in case you missed that post.

Today I have another bizarre yet beautiful creature. Although this one is from the Kingdom of Insects.

Meet the... Picasso moth!

What a... masterpiece! ๐Ÿ˜†

Scientifically described as Baorisa hieroglyphica, the species is best known for its unique...artistic patterns. Hence, it's common name after the famous painter. Although some think its artistic patterns are more fitting to other artists:

The colors are reminiscent of a Mondrian painting, and the dashing modern style reminds the viewer of Joan Mirรณ or Vassily Kandinsky. However, the moth has been colloquially named for Pablo Picasso due to his fame, colorful works, and position within the canon of Modern Art. source

I don't even know who these people are so... no comment. Art is not my strong suit ๐Ÿ˜†

The species was first described by the British entomologist Frederic Moore in 1882 and occurs in parts of northeastern India and Southeast Asia. It's a nocturnal insect feeding mostly on the nectar of various flowers.

Interestingly, you might notice that the patterns in the corners of the wings (which have a wingspan of about 2 inches) look a lot like a spiders! Maybe some form of mimicry? Dunno, and I couldn't find much on it. Honestly, I have no idea what kind of environmental pressures could lead to such a unique and morphology.

Here's a "video" with some more photos and info on the creature. Unfortunately, I couldn't find some actual footage, I guess it's an elusive creature:

Ok friends, this is it for today. Hope you enjoyed reading about yet another unique creature with me :)
