Vintage 1972 USPS Universal Postal Union Round

To encourage collection and provide revenue to the postal service, postmaster James C. Curtis of Memphis, Tennessee, ordered the creation of twelve medallions honoring significant occasions in postal history at the beginning of the 1970s.

1972 USPS Universal Postal Union Round, 1 Oz PF

On behalf of the Post Office, the US Mint produced the medallions. Limited edition one-ounce silver rounds with a proof-like finish were made, and each one had a serial number on the edge.

This is round 4222 of 7000, made from .999 Fine Silver.

The medallions were designed to honor particular occasions in postal history on their anniversaries. In general, the anniversavery date matched the issue date. This particular round was issued in 1972, the 125th Anniversary of the First Postage Stamp.

It was priced at $12.00 per silver round in 1972.

The first US postal stamps honoring George Washington and Benjamin Franklin are shown on the obverse. "125TH ANNIVERSARY" is written at the top, and the dates "1847-1972" are right below it. The date is at the bottom, while the words "FIRST UNITED STATES POSTAGE STAMPS" are written in a banner just above. Ivy sprigs adorn the round's lower left and lower right corners.

On the back, there is a textual inscription that discusses the origins of the US postage stamp and its history. The years 1847–1972 are written above the text, while the US Postal Service logo is located beneath it.

These are the USPS vintage rounds.
