Eagles of American Liberty

The Bald Eagles are birds that are iconic to America. Most coins and medals that matter carry the image of this iconic bird/s.

Like these American Liberty Medals.

Silver medals are made by the U.S. Mint and what distinguishes them is that they are exquisite works of art. Collectors add this well-liked precious metal to their numismatic portfolios, because it is practical and affordable. Classic American themes and values are reflected in the historical designs of silver medals.

Despite being a symbol, the gorgeous national bird of America has actually been threatened with extinction. There were about 100,000 bald eagles that nested in the country in the late 1800s, but the number of birds quickly decreased owing to things like habitat damage and poaching.

The Bald Eagle Protection Act, which Congress approved in 1940, made it unlawful to own, kill, or trade the raptors. When they started consuming prey that had been exposed to DDT, a pesticide that was widely used after World War II, a new concern emerged. The bald eagle was listed as an endangered species in 1978 because there were only 400 breeding pairs of them left in the continental U.S. by the 1960s.

The bald eagle population had sufficiently recovered by 1995 for the status of the species to be reclassified from endangered to threatened, and by 2007 it had totally removed from the list thanks to federal protections and regulations surrounding DDT.

Did you know that the bald eagle has eyesight that is 4 to 8 times that stronger than the average human? That's unbelievable, isn't it? Well, what's even more unbelievable is the fact that it has a see-through membrane on the eyelids that lets it see clearly even with its eye closed!
