En la escuela me decían Rodolfo porque, al llegar el inverno, mi nariz se ponía tan roja como la de ese reno de Santa Claus. Recuerdo que los niños me esperaban en el patio de recreación solo para lanzarme bolas de nieve mientras cantaban villancicos, ¡odiosos villancicos! Llegaba a casa destrozado, tanto por las alergias como por los golpes de hielo, y lo peor era que mi mamá me esperaba con esas vitaminas que sabían a cáscaras de limón. Mi único consuelo eran los especiales de navidad, perfectos para disfrutar con una buena taza de chocolate caliente y malvaviscos. ¡Era un alivio después de un día de mierda! Si para mis estúpidos compañeros de clase yo era Rodolfo, para mi madre era el Grinch. Siempre peleábamos porque no me gustaban los abrigos que ella tejía para mí, o porque detestaba ir a las fiestas navideñas de mis tías solteronas, o porque mi sentido común era tan avanzado como para creerme el cuento del gordo que invade las chimeneas para dejar regalos. Lo mío era la televisión, y esa película donde el niño travieso hacía trampas a los criminales. ¿Salir de casa? ¡Solo si se trataba de la escuela! Mi mamá, cansada de mi negativa a disfrutar del exterior festivo, trajo la fiesta de mis tías a la casa. Al principio le dije algo como: “¡No! Esas viejas me pellizcarán las mejillas. Además huelen a zorrillo”. Vale, no sé si fue eso lo que le grité a mamá frente a la chimenea, de lo que sí estoy seguro es que ella no anuló su idea, y además de las tías también invitó a los vecinos, ¡y me tejió un horrible suéter con un trencito sonriente! Claro que yo tenía un plan, y ese era encerrarme en mi habitación hasta que la navidad culminara. Ante mi disposición a estar ausente, ella me dijo: —Hazlo y acompañarás a tus tías durante el verano siguiente. Entre la espada y la pared, no me quedó de otra aguantarlas una noche en vez de todo el verano, y el día de la fiesta, en la tormentosa víspera navideña, mi madre abrió las puertas de la casa para recibir a las tías odiosas y al resto de los intrusos. Me vestí como ella quería, con unos pantalones rojos y el suéter del trencito que me causaba comezón. Tuve que fingir sonrisas y cantar estúpidos villancicos, y además decirles a las señoras el lugar preciso donde aguardaba el baño. Cansado de atender a los invitados salí de casa, aun cuando el frío alborotaba mi alergia para enrojecerme la nariz. Pateé la nieve acumulada en el porche y comencé a quejarme a solas de las ideas de mi mamá. Hablando solo, como si fuera yo un loco, imité en tono burlón a mis tías. Mi nariz ya estaba roja y acuosa, así que, molesto también conmigo mismo, me dirigí unas palabras: —Vaya, eres un idiota… —me dije, hablando como los payasos del circo—, Hasta el reno de Santa Claus es menos idiota que tú, ¡y eso que se parecen! En mi propia rabia fui incapaz de notar que no estaba solo: había una chica observándome en un costado. No rió, ni tampoco se burló de mi nariz como el resto de las chicas. Llevaba un abrigo espeso de color verde, y un gorro blanco con un pompón del mismo color en la punta. ¿De dónde diablos había salido? Retrocedí, esperando la oportunidad para salir corriendo. Ella por el contrario se acercó más a mí, haciendo crujir la nieve en debajo de sus botas. —¿Estás bien? —Preguntó ella. Afirmé, intentando volver a casa lo más pronto posible. Sin embargo, en mi retorno, los estornudos y la nieve jabonosa me arrastraron por el suelo; caí de boca, agrietando mi labio superior y uno que otro diente. De inmediato la chica se apresuró a auxiliarme: me apoyó entre sus hombros para sacudir la nieve y limpiar la gotita de sangre que escurría por mi boca. Era más alta y fuerte que yo, y olía a galletas de avena. Tras el incidente nos sentamos en los peldaños que daban a la puerta de mi casa, y yo, apenado como los renos con las borracheras de santa Claus, aproveché la oportunidad para disculparme. —Lo siento. —Le dije sin mirarla. —Deberías entrar a tu casa, —habló ella con preocupación—, el frío te está matando. —No quiero regresar. —Le expliqué—. Allá dentro huele a tías viejas. —¿Hueles a tus tías? —Ella acompañó su pregunta con una carcajada. —Hasta los que no tienen nariz pueden olerlas a kilómetros de distancia. —Aclaré. —Siguen siendo tus tías, tu familia… —La chica me sonrió—, quizás huelan a viejas, o peor, pero te quieren. —Lo dices porque no vives con ellas. —Dije irónicamente. —Me encantaría tener tías cariñosas y olorosas a viejas y una casa como la tuya. —Ella suspiró—. En cambio, me toca deambular por las calles, de pueblo en pueblo, sin más que este abrigo para protegerme del clima frío. —Si quieres te regalo mi casa, con tías incluidas. —Propongo, intentando que los estornudos no opaquen mis risas. —Eres un chico muy testarudo. —Afirma ella—. Solo quiero que te sientas bien. —Me sentiría bien si toda esa gente se fuera de mi casa. —Digo mientras froto mis manos para evitar el frío. —¿Por qué no vamos a la mía? —Propone ella. —Me dijiste que no tenias casa. —Le recuerdo yo—, y que debías deambular de pueblo en pueblo para no sé qué. —Solo intentaba parecer un milagro navideño, —confiesa—, pero ya veo que tú no te comes esos cuentos tan fácilmente. —Mi mamá me dice Grinch, y los idiotas de mi escuela me llaman Rodolfo, como el reno de santa Claus. —Me presento con todos mis sobrenombres—. Pero tú puedes llamarme Daniel. —Con gusto, Daniel. —Confirma—. Tú puedes decirme Katiuska. —¿Es tú nombre? —Inquiero. —No, pero siempre quise que me llamaran así. Mi conversación con katiuska se prolongó por mucho más tiempo, tanto tiempo que no recuerdo exactamente cómo me quedé dormido. Mi mamá dijo haberme encontrado tirado en la nieve, a punto de la hipotermia, susurrando el nombre de una mujer. Durante la hospitalización pregunté por ella, negándome a creer que todo se había tratado de una alucinación. Solo la nieve es testigo de nuestro encuentro, es por eso que cada nochebuena salgo al porche de mi casa, con una buena dosis de antialérgico sobre las venas y una taza de chocolate caliente con malvaviscos. Y allí, en la fría víspera de Navidad, aguardo su regreso junto a las estrellas… esperando que aparezca con su abrigo verde y su gorro de pompón blanco.

At school they called me Rodolfo because, when winter came, my nose turned as red as that of Santa's reindeer. I remember the kids would wait for me in the playground just to throw snowballs at me while they sang Christmas carols, hateful Christmas carols! I would come home devastated, both from allergies and from frostbite, and the worst thing was that my mom was waiting for me with those vitamins that tasted like lemon peel. My only consolation was the Christmas specials, perfect to enjoy with a nice cup of hot chocolate and marshmallows. It was a relief after a shitty day! If for my stupid classmates I was Rodolfo, for my mother I was the Grinch. We always fought because I didn't like the coats she knitted for me, or because I hated going to my spinster aunts' Christmas parties, or because my common sense was advanced enough to believe the story of the fat man who invades chimneys to leave presents. Mine was television, and that movie where the naughty boy cheated criminals. Leaving home? Only if it was about school! My mom, tired of my refusal to enjoy the festive outdoors, brought my aunts' party to the house. At first I said something like: “No! Those old women will pinch my cheeks. Plus they smell like a skunk." Ok, I don't know if that's what I yelled at mom in front of the fireplace, what I'm sure of is that she didn't cancel her idea, and in addition to the aunts she also invited the neighbors, and she knitted me a horrible sweater with a smiling train! Of course I had a plan, and that was to lock myself in my room until Christmas was over. Faced with my willingness to be absent, she told me: "Do it and you'll be accompanying your aunts for the following summer." Between a rock and a hard place, I had no choice but to put up with them one night instead of the whole summer, and on the day of the party, on the stormy Christmas Eve, my mother opened the doors of the house to receive the hateful aunts and to the rest of the intruders. I dressed as she wanted, with red pants and the sweater with the little train that made me itch. I had to fake smiles and sing stupid Christmas carols, and also tell the ladies the precise spot where the bath was waiting. Tired of attending to the guests, I left the house, even when the cold stirred up my allergies to make my nose red. I kicked off the snow on the porch and started complaining to myself about my mom's ideas. Speaking to myself, as if I were a madman, I mockingly imitated my aunts. My nose was already red and watery, so, annoyed with myself as well, I said a few words to myself: "Wow, you're an idiot..." I said to myself, speaking like the clowns in the circus, "Even Santa's reindeer is less of an idiot than you, and they look alike!" In my own rage I was unable to notice that I wasn't alone: there was a girl watching me from the side. She didn't laugh, nor did she make fun of my nose like the rest of the girls. She was wearing a thick green coat, and a white hat with a pom-pom of the same color at the end. Where the hell had she come from? I backed away, waiting for the opportunity to run. She instead moved closer to me, crunching the snow under her boots. “Are you okay?” She asked. I stated, trying to get home as soon as possible. However, on my way back, sneezes and soapy snow dragged me across the floor; I fell flat on my face, cracking my upper lip and a tooth or two. Immediately the girl rushed to help me: she supported me between her shoulders to shake off the snow and clean the little drop of blood that dripped from my mouth. She was taller and stronger than me, and she smelled like oatmeal cookies. After the incident we sat on the steps that led to the door of my house, and I, embarrassed as the reindeer with the drunkenness of Santa Claus, took the opportunity to apologize. “I am sorry.” I told her without looking at her. "You should go into your house," she spoke with concern, "the cold is killing you." “I do not want to go back.” I explained. “It smells like old aunts in there.” "Do you smell your aunts?" She accompanied her question with a laugh. "Even those without noses can smell them from miles away." I clarified. "They're still your aunts, your family..." The girl smiled at me, "maybe they smell like old women, or worse, but they love you." "You say that because you don't live with them." I said ironically. “I would love to have loving and old, Smelling aunts and a house like yours.” She sighed. “Instead, she gets me wandering the streets, from town to town, with nothing but this coat to protect me from the cold weather.” “If you want, I'll give you my house, aunts included.” I propose, trying not to let the sneezes drown out my laughter. “You are a very stubborn boy.” She affirms. “I just want you to feel good.” “I'd feel good if all those people left my house.” I say while rubbing my hands to avoid the cold. "Why don't we go to mine?" She proposes. "You told me you didn't have a home." I remind She. “And that you had to wander from town to town for I don't know what.” “I was just trying to sound like a Christmas miracle,” she confesses, “but I see you don't buy those stories so easily. "My mom calls me Grinch, and the idiots at my school call me Rudolph, after Santa's reindeer." I introduce myself with all my nicknames. “But you can call me Daniel.” "Gladly Daniel.” Confirms. “You can call me Katiuska.” “Is your name?” I inquire. "No, but I always wanted to be called that." My conversation with Katiuska went on much longer, so long that I don't remember exactly how I fell asleep. My mom said she found me lying in the snow, near hypothermia, whispering a woman's name. During her hospitalization I asked about her, refusing to believe that it had all been a hallucination. Doctors and psychologists related Katiuska's visit as a side effect of cold, fever and allergies… however, deep in my heart, I still believe that everything was as real as this cold breeze blowing on my cheeks. Only the snow is witness to our encounter, that is why every Christmas Eve I go out on the porch of my house, with a good dose of anti-allergy medicine on my veins and a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows. And there, on the cold Christmas Eve, I await her return among the stars…waiting for her to show up in her green coat and her white pom-pom hat.
