What is IPFS (InterPlanetary File System)
It is a p2p hypermedia protocol which was designed to make the web faster, safer and more open. The main objective of IPFS is to replace the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), as many of us know it is an important client-based protocol that is used to transfer web pages across a network centrally, that is one of the points The important thing that IPFS differs in is a fully decentralized protocol.
Brave noted that HTTP related issues:
"The underlying protocol of the web today is HTTP, which dictates where power exists in those applications. HTTP puts publishers in complete control of service availability and data access, making end users recipients liabilities rather than agency in the relationship. "
As such, the integration of IPFS with the Brave browser is a major step toward redefining the existing Internet architecture, putting individuals in control rather than publishers, Brave said. "IPFS changes this dynamic by allowing direct communication and exchange between users through a cooperative public network,"
One of Brave's main reasons for using this protocol is the fact that it can help creators distribute their content by taking advantage of data replication, and the higher performance that uploading content offers by taking advantage of the decentralized network. In addition to that, it allows access to content that has been censored either by corporations or by governments, this is because it does not depend on the connection to a specific server. With IPFS you can even access content while disconnected from the network as long as we have seen it before.
Brave, Among the future improvements that have been raised
- Improve performance and stability - reduce memory, CPU, and bandwidth use
- Ease both publishing and sharing of IPFS content in browser UI
- Add features for revisitation, co-hosting, and offline/local collaboration
- Define the application model for IPFS web apps
- Experiment with integrating the features and economic models of Basic Attention Token and Filecoin
- Develop the security and privacy user interface and visual language for IPFS in the browser address bar
- Add IPFS support to Brave’s Android browser
