It was on July 25, 1139, the day consecrated to Santiago that, according to tradition, the troops of D. Afonso Henriques (first king of Portugal) achieved a great victory over a Muslim army that would have profound consequences for the emancipation of Portugal as an independent kingdom.
It is one of the most celebrated battles in the entire history of Portugal, despite the existence of great doubts and uncertainties about the confrontation. The first concerns the place where it will have occurred. Tradition indicates that it took place in Baixo Alentejo, somewhere in the vicinity of the town with that name, but there are those who suggest other places, in Ribatejo or Beira Litoral. Nothing is known about the number of forces involved or the circumstances of the battle.
A plausible scenario suggests that D. Afonso Henriques made a foray into Baixo Alentejo and that he obtained an unlikely victory over enemy forces, far superior in number, who intended to cut his withdrawal, possibly led by the Muslim governor of Santarém.
