This Day In Crypto History @ 27 February - Double DDoS on OKEx and Bitfinex

This is just a short one for a Saturday.

27 February seems to have been a quiet day over the years of crypto history.

All that has been uncovered so far were double DDoS attacks on the OKEx and Bitfinex exchanges.

I am sure though that more events for this day will be found as our research goes on.

27 February 2020 - Double DDos Attacks on OKEx and Bitfinex

OKEx is a Malta-based cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2017.

Bitfinex is a cryptocurrency exchange owned and operated by iFinex Inc, which is headquartered in Hong Kong and registered in the British Virgin Islands.

Both the exchanges have had their fair share of controversy. Not least of which is Bitfinex's close connection with the Tether stable coin. As of 2018 both companies shared common shareholders and management.

The distributed denial of service attacks began on OKEx at 11.30am EST on 27 February with as much as 200 gigabytes per second of traffic.

OKEx CEO Jay Hao blamed unnamed competitors for the attack.

After a short respite the attack resumed early the following morning.

At around the same time Bitfinex was attacked as well. That attack lasted for about an hour.

The second OKEx attack was almost double the first in intensity.

It was unclear if the two attacks were connected, but despite the high level of sophistication, both exchanges regained control quite quickly and normal service levels were resumed.

Bitfinex CTO, Paolo Ardoino tweeted...

We've seen a level of sophistication that means a deep preparation from the attacker. Good news: this family of attacks won't work again against Bitfinex.

Eight months after this incident in October OKEx temporarily suspended withdrawals following the alleged arrest of its founder Xu Mingxing. Withdrawals resumed the following month.

Project Update

We are now two weeks into the This Day In Crypto History project and I am learning loads.

I have been digging in all sorts of dusty corners of the internet and so far have uncovered over 350 events across 215 days.

New days are being filled regularly and I expect the whole year will have at least one event within the next few weeks.

@johnspalding has been a great help uncovering events for some difficult days in February.

Anyone else is welcome to join in researching events - 1 HIVE is paid for each accepted event.

Events will have to be notable enough, with links to reputable websites for verification. Events can be posted in comments below or sent to me on Discord (Pennsif#9921).

February is coming to an end, and then there will be a big push into March.

I have even just set up a Twitter account for the project (@DaysInCrypto) if you want to follow.

Tweets to flow presently...
