Avoid Balancing Work and Life?

Naval Ravikant has a unique view on work and we will take a deeper dive into what he thinks and how we may want to apply what he says in order to achieve more.

A desire to me is a contract that you make to yourself to be unhappy until you get what you want.

Naval’s definition of desire seems more negative than it appears. That is because it likely is and here is why? When people try to complete multiple tasks they tend to lack focus because they are trying to juggle too many things at once. When they fail any one task it makes it seems like nothing had been done because they see the failure. This makes one feel frustrated and or overwhelmed for doing too much.

The desire of want more is what will create frustration that leads into sadness. Ask yourself why are you working for your employer? To make ends meet? To make money to retire? To chase your career ambitions? Having desires is finds but realize the outcomes will not reach expectations will reduce the frustrations. However Naval recommends best to only have one desire and have that desire be the focal point in your life.

Reasons Why Work and Life Balance Don’t Work

Naval gives a reasonable example of why work and life balance doesn’t work.
Someone who works a 9 to 5 job and goes home after work to watch Netflix and chill will not accomplish much in life. They need to have an obsession to doing their work that it doesn’t feel like work. Then even after work hours the work continues because they are obsessed in it. So obsessed that they don’t feel the need for down time like watching Netflix or going out clubbing.

This obsession to wanting to do more leads to the overall view of consuming versus constructing. Naval elaborates that one can only do well if they construct what society needs instead of consuming what society wants. In short become the creator that solves people’s problems and money will follow. Otherwise consume what others have created and live life without expecting much likelihood of ever becoming wealthy.

Conclusions

Naval’s thoughts on working really comes down to doing it without thinking it’s work. Instead do it for the desire to solve something very specific. In are previous example of why we take on a 9 to 5 job the majority would say it’s for earning an income to provide for one self or family. Doing the job is fine but doing it without thinking it’s a job would make one be willing to go the extra mile because they have the desire to do so. That is why you sometimes here some say they love their jobs and often do more than 9 to 5. Those that skip the Netflix and consumption activities while focus on creating are likely the ones that shape the world we live in. The latter are the ones who control the majority of global wealth.

Again it’s not wrong to consume but one have to lower expectations of their potential since they lack the desire to do more. Instead accept the outcome that someone else would get rich off of the consumer. Ask yourself, do you want to create or consume? If it’s to create do you have enough focus to be a desire you are willing to put in?
