➤ I was kind of bored when my curiosity was awakened again about the Half Life saga, specifically the first games. Thanks to the fact that I've been talking for a while with a friend who started in the story and we have had many interesting talks about the game, creating theories, assumptions and while watching as he tells me how he completes the game or sometimes when he asks me for help. We just started talking about Half Life: Opposing Force, the most curious expansion, debatable and that has generated more doubts about all the extra content that has been created in Half Life. The first thing we can notice is that we have a new amount of weapons quite different from the usual ones, assuming that we are in the role of a military man. Throughout the story of Half Life the invasion is based on a single race of aliens, known as the Xen Race. While in Half Life Opposing Force a whole new race is added, where we can see new enemies, weapons and mechanics never seen before. This race is called "Race X" and only appears in this game, never mentioned or seen in any other game. But how is this supposed to happen? ➤ This supposed race that shows us a huge amount of new content for Half Life, which I personally love. In Half Life 1 and also all Half life 2 we practically always use the same weapons and encounter a specific amount of enemies, without much variation, and Opposing Force broke this block by showing more than 2 entire races. According to one theory the existence of this race is nothing more than remote, that is, it is an existing race of the many that exist in the universe which took advantage of the invasion of the Xen race to Earth for them to attack as well. It is thought that they are a rather small race that only had the opportunity to open a portal to Earth, a portal that ends up closing Shepard. ➤ But why do we never see them in Half Life? There is a point between the story of Opposing Force and Half Life where we first meet Gordon Freeman, just before he took a portal that would take him completely out of Black Mesa. Right after Gordon Freeman left Black Mesa is when we start facing these new enemies, so this serves as a logical explanation as to why we never get to see them in Half Life. When we finish Half Life Opposing Force and close the portal of this race, we are just teleported with Gman, who practically ends up kidnapping us, saying that he can not keep us free because we can not give the information of everything that happened in Black Mesa, and also tells us that we are a special person, but we do not have the necessary qualities to fulfill their jobs nor we compare to his current counterpart, (Gordon Freeman). My conclusion is that it is a middle ground between whether or not Opposing Force is really a valid game for the plot. As the writer himself said, I think the story of Adrian Shepard and everything that happened, is real only if Gman decides so. Ultimately he was frozen and we may never know more about him, all the secrets and everything about this new race was destroyed, hidden and frozen by Gman. It is impossible to define a yes or no, we will only be able to see it in future installments. I like to think that this release is truly valid, as it honestly brings a lot of new content and is the best expansion they ended up releasing for Half Life, even though it still falls short of the main game. ➤ Many people believe that this expansion is even better than the main game, but it is not. In spite of everything, it is an expansion that has many plot holes, a somewhat linear story and its only quality is to bring new variety to the game, which, as good as it is, still falls short of the original game. But it still remains the best expansion compared to its siblings. La mayoría de las preguntas se basan en saber si el juego verdaderamente va acorde a la historia, es decir, si es canon o no, o si simplemente es un añadido extra. Pero creo que lo primero que debemos saber es que de por si esta expansión no es oficialmente creada por Valve, este es un punto muy importante. Aunque aún así fue supervisada por el equipo de Valve y supuestamente los escritores para que de cierta forma vaya acorde a lo que se ha creado. Aunque aún no se responde de forma oficial si el juego verdaderamente tiene relación con la historia de la saga. Junto a esta expansión se crearon dos más, Blue Shift y Decay, las cuales mantienen el enfasis del primer juego, sin marcar ninguna diferencia más que un punto de vista distinto del desastre, controlando distintos personajes e historias. ➤ En Half Life Opposing Force tomamos el papel de uno de los militares enviados a Black Mesa, para tomar el orden y acabar con todo lo que haya y ocultar el desastre que había ocurrido. Aunque exactamente no sepamos esto, ya que antes de llegar a Black Mesa nuestro helicóptero fue derribado y no logramos escuchar las órdenes específicas. Se supone que abordamos el desastre al mismo tiempo que en el primer juego, es decir, estamos en la misma linea temporal, lugar y momento. Aunque claro que cada uno siguiendo su paso, pero de cierta forma sincronizándose. Nuestro objetivo es capturar a Gordon Freeman. Lo primero que podemos notar es que poseemos una nueva cantidad de armas bastante distintas a las acostumbradas, suponiendo que estamos en el papel de un militar. Tendremos entre un cuchillo, una pequeña copia de la palanca, rifles de francotirador, una nueva pistola, una metralleta pesada y un arma que crea pequeños portales. Armas completamente exclusivas de esta expansión, que no llegamos a ver en ningún momento en los otros juegos. Durante toda la historia de Half Life la invasión se basa en una única raza de extraterrestres, conocida como la Raza Xen. Mientras que en Half Life Opposing Force es añadida una nueva raza por completo, donde podemos ver nuevos enemigos, armas y mecánicas nunca antes vistas. Esta raza es llamada "Raza X" y solamente aparece en este juego, nunca es mencionada ni vista en ningún otro juego. ¿Pero cómo se supone que sucede esto? ➤ Esta supuesta raza que nos muestra una cantidad inmensa de contenido nuevo para Half Life, que personalmente me encanta. En Half Life 1 y también todos los Half life 2 prácticamente utilizamos siempre las mismas armas y nos encontramos con una cantidad específica de enemigos, sin que exista mucha variación, y Opposing Force rompió este bloque mostrando más de 2 razas enteras. Según una teoría la existencia de esta raza no es más que remota, es decir, es una raza existente de las tantas que hay en el universo las cuales aprovecharon la invasión de la raza Xen a la tierra para ellos también atacar. Según se piensa son una raza bastante pequeña que solo tuvo la oportunidad de abrir un portal hacia la tierra, portal que termina cerrando Shepard. ➤ ¿Pero por qué nunca los vemos en Half Life? Hay un punto entre la historia de Opposing Force y Half Life donde por primera vez nos encontramos con Gordon Freeman, justo antes de que él tomara un portal que lo sacaría por completo de Black Mesa. Justo después de que Gordon Freeman abandonara Black Mesa es cuando nos comenzamos a enfrentar a estos nuevos enemigos, por lo cual esto sirve como explicación lógica para saber porque nunca los llegamos a ver en Half Life. Son todas armas alienígenas. Podemos encontrarnos con lo que parece ser una pequeña arma de rayos, un arma que parece un gusano que lanza bolas ácidas, también terminamos tomando una babosa que nos sirve para escalar por las paredes. Sí, escalar por las paredes, nunca antes se había visto algo así en Half Life ni lo llegamos a ver en ningún otro. Todo lo que mantenía vida en Black Mesa fue destruido junto a la explosión del lugar. Es decir, no quedó ni una sola prueba y ninguna persona que haya presenciado la existencia de esta raza y las nuevas armas. Porque ni el mismo Gordon Freeman estuvo en el momento de su aparición. La única persona con vida fue Adrian Shepard, nuestro personaje... Pero, ¿qué pasó con él? Cuando terminamos Half Life Opposing Force y cerramos el portal de esta raza, justamente somos teletransportados con Gman, quien prácticamente termina secuestrandonos, diciendo que no puede mantenernos libres debido a que no podemos dar la información de todo lo que sucedió en Black Mesa, y también nos cuenta que somos una persona especial, pero no poseemos las cualidades necesarias para cumplir sus trabajos ni nos comparamos a su actual contradado, (Gordon Freeman). Por lo cual decide congelarnos en el tiempo para sacarnos cuando lo considere necesario. Mi conclusión es que es un punto medio entre si realmente Opposing Force es un juego válido para la trama. Como dijo el mismo escritor, creo que la historia de Adrian Shepard y todo lo que sucedió, es real solo si Gman lo decide. A fin de cuentas fue congelado y tal vez nunca sepamos más de él, todos los secretos y todo acerca de esta nueva raza fue destruido, oculto y congelado por Gman. Es imposible definir un sí o un no, solo lo podremos ver en entregas futuras. Me gusta pensar que esta entrega verdaderamente es valida, ya que sinceramente trae mucho contenido nuevo y es la mejor expansión que terminaron sacando de Half Life, aunque aún así se siga quedando corta para el juego principal. ➤ Muchas personas creen que esta expansión es incluso mejor que el juego principal, pero no. A pesar de todo es una expansión que posee muchos huecos argumentales, una historia algo lineal y que su única cualidad es la de traer nueva variedad al juego, que por más buena que sea, se sigue quedando corta ante el juego original.
