Some of my readers may be aware of my keen interest in following news and events pertaining to shipwreck treasures. The saga of the Spanish 64 gun treasure galleon San Jose is billed as the Holy Grail of all shipwrecks.
I have a budding collection of shipwreck goodies; The Gairsoppa silver bar, El Cazador 4 Reales, North Song Ten Cash, and the SS Japan 1872cc American Trade Dollar. Any authentic coin from the San Jose would be an awesome addition!
However, I’m not holding my breath on any of those coins coming to market soon, so getting a 2022 $5 Niue 2 Troy oz. San Jose silver coin will do just fine and as the Day 6 silver of my 12 days of Christmas, as initiated by @silverd510
Her cargo is speculated to include as much as 11 million 8 Escudos to a weight of 8.8 million troy oz. AWG worth more than $11 Billion., along with various silver Reales, artifacts and emeralds from Potosi and Bolivia.
The San Jose assumed the role as the flagship of the Spanish treasure fleet of three Spanish warships with 14 merchant ships. On June 8th, 1807 they encountered a British squadron and during the engagement the powder magazine of the San Jose exploded destroying the ship before sinking, only 11 of the 600 crew survived.
There she rested for 300+ years somewhere off the Colombian coast off Baru Cartagena until a private enterprise SSA, Sea Search Armada claimed the discovery of what may be the San Jose in 1981, Of course the claim and contract between the Colombian Government and the SSA became mired in controversy and legalities until the wreck was finally deemed the property of Columbia. The identification of this wreck wasn’t confirmed but was not the San Jose.
In November 2015 another wreck was discovered at a different location by the Colombian navy using a remote vehicle. The Seville forged ornate bronze guns identified the wreck as the San Jose, and since then recovered artifacts and remote photos satiated historians, scholars, claimants, and the public as well as the world’s curiosity. With all the legal and diplomatic disputes finally set aside the Colombian navy is ready to resume with recovery operations of what will be both an archeological and economic treasure. ☠️
