The Rise of Hive: Going on Three Years of Being Better Than Steemit

Normally I refer to Steemit as "the other blockchain" because it's like that crazy ex-girlfriend you just want to forget. That's O.K. for comments but for this post I'll refer to that other blockchain by its proper name.

On February 14, 2020 Ned Scott announced that he had sold the Steemit blockchain platform to Justin Sun. In response to that hostile takeover of a blockchain the Hive platform was founded. Maybe you weren't aware of decentralized blogging and social media three years ago. For many of us who were active at the time we will remember the absolute mess that went down.

Hive was forked from Steemit in March 2020. When the Steemit soft hard fork occurred on March 20, 2020 it included an element to confiscate tokens from influential users who opposed the sale of Steemit to Justin Sun. That taking of tokens was a betray of the principles of decentralization and self-custody of assets. Not much has changed about Steemit's centralization since Hive was started.

As the owner of the Steemit platform, Justin Sun has significant influence over the direction of Steemit. He has the power to make decisions about the platform, including changes to the Steem blockchain, new features and updates, and new partnerships. Sun is not technically the sole decision maker for Steemit. Theoretically any changes or updates to Steemit must be approved by the Steem blockchain stakeholders. Justin Sun has already used a hardfork once to confiscate the assets from shareholders. Why oppose Justin Sun and risk your stake? Justin Sun used a hardfork as punishment before. He can do it again.

Steemit is DINO (Decentralized In Name Only). Hive isn't perfect but it is far more decentralized than Steemit. Hive has a more decentralized governance model, where users hold more power and control over the platform's direction and decision-making. In contrast, Steemit has a more centralized governance structure. I don't know how many of Steemit's blockchain witnesses are sockpuppet accounts of Justin Sun but I'd be shocked if it isn't the majority of them.

Hive also has a more supportive and active community than Steemit. The Hive community is made up of a wide range of users, from content creators and curators to developers and investors. This diversity of users and perspectives has led to a thriving ecosystem of dApps, communities, and initiatives that are built on top of the Hive blockchain.

Hive has become a better blockchain than Steemit. Hive provides a more democratic and transparent platform for content creators and users, with a more supportive and active community.

And to Justin Sun, please stop calling and texting me. I allowed you to be a guest blogger on my main @holovision account for the last three April 1sts, but I meant it when I said last year that there would be no more invites for you
to guest blog for me again.
