ABOUT THE CARD :

The Chaos Legionnaires are ruthless warriors and the Chaos Legion's elite fighting force. Alvar Veralyn was conscripted into their ranks at a young age after his family was slain and his world conquered by the Chaos Legion. The harsh conditioning that all conscripts receive nearly broke the child, but in the end, his old, easy way of life was subsumed by the desire for battle and conquest. Alvar dedicated himself to his training, intent on reshaping his mind and his body until he had no equal on the battlefield. Eventually, he rose to the rank of General and now stands as leader of the Chaos Legionnaires.
Alvar is a most imposing sight on the battlefield. His armor is imbued to withstand the strongest of magical attacks, and even the mightiest of foes is no match for his massive, two-handed sword, which some say was forged in the Realm of Nightmare. He lives for battle, wading through his enemies and striking them down as he seeks out the strongest among them to engage in single combat. He enjoys nothing more than watching the life fade from his opponent's eyes. His conquests are legendary even among the Legionnaires, and he earned the title of Godkiller after the Battle of Dargnilat, during which he single-handedly defeated one of the Old Gods.

Owning or renting decent Neutral monsters are one of the best decision in Splinterlands game as we can play them alongside any Splinter. Chaos Legion set has brought quite a few game changing Neutral cards into the Splinterlands game and or featured card of the week,Legionnaire Alvar is one of those amazing cards that you can lay in most of the battles to give the opponent a tough time.
The card is best known for being played as a tank specially against magic heavy teams.
But before we see the card in action, let's have a look into the details and stats of the card.

Edition: CHAOS LEGION
Rarity: LEGENDARY
Element: NEUTRAL
Attack: MELEE
Abilities:
Void Armor
Giant Killer
Demoralize

Legionnaire Alvar is a 9 mana tank best known for it's dominance over Magic monsters with it's Void Armor ability. We find this card used a lot with support cards with Resurrect and Repair to get the best use of it's abilities.
At level 2, the card gets it's second ability of Giant Killer that makes the card even better against high mana giants.
Though we did mention that Legionnaire Alvar is a tank to play against magic monsters, at level 3 the card has a great debuff ability of Demoralize that helps the card to be efficient against melee monsters too.
And at the highest level, the card gets an offensive ability of Deathblow, making it a great all round defensive as well as offensive tank.
And for the base stats, Legionnaire Alvar has 2 melee damage, 2 speed, armor and 6 hp at level 1 and it's melee damage is increased to 3 at level 2. At level 3, the card gets an additional defensive stat in the form of armor making it 9 and at the highest level the card's hp becomes 7.
For our today's battle, we will be covering a battle in which we are using a level 3 Legionnaire Alvar.

THE LINE UP :

PositionCardManaLevelDescription
Summoner46For this battle, we chose a level 6 Kelya Frendul which will give all of our allies +1 armor and +1 speed. Kelya is undoubtedly one of the strongest summoners from Chaos Legion and one of the most popular ones too. It is also the most expensive rare summoner from Chaos Legion,
Position 193As our tank, we are playing the card of the week, Legionnaire Alvar. The plan is to have the card upfront with it's shield to absorb as much damage as possible while the rest of the damage dealers do the job.
Position 256At the second position, we have placed a level 6 Venari Wavesmith which is a perfect with it's Protect ability to increase the armor of our tank as well as the rest of the team. And additionally it provides us with useful magic attack of 2, 3 speed, 4 hp and Dispel
Position 368In the third position, we have placed a level 8 Deeplurker which is undoubtedly one of the best Opportunity cards of the water splinter from the Chaos Legion set with 5 melee attack, 4 speed and 6 hp. What makes the card even more deadly is it's Poison ability at level 6 and above.
Position 472In the fourth position, we have our placed River Hellondale which is one of the most played cards with Kelya and her melee heavy team because of it's Resurrect and more importantly Inspire abilities. And, for the base stats, it has 2 magic damage, 2 speed, 1 armor and 4 hp.
Position 535In the next position, we are playing a level 5 Angelic Mandarin, the low mana archer with Triage to heal our backline which is perfect against Scattershot. It is also quite handy with 2 archery damage, 3 speed and 6 hp costing us only 3 mana.
Position 684In the last position, we have placed a level 4 Wave Brood, which was a odd decision to be honest as playing a monster with Taunt in Aimless rule set does not guarantee the best use of the ability. Anyways, we chose the card for it's massive hp pool of 13 with Void so that it can sustain heavy hits. The card also has 2 archery damage with Close Range.

THE OPPONENT LINE UP :

PositionCardManaLevelDescription
Summoner46The opponent too creates a team surrounding the popular Kelya Frendul and that too a level 6 like ours. Looks like this will be a close battle.
Position 183At the first position, we will be facing a level 3 Djinn Oshannus, the deadly reward card with Void Phase and Forcefield Phase abilities making it a solid tank against all heavy attackers. It is also very good in offense with 2 magic damage, and super fast with 5 speed and having hp of 11.
Position 278In the second position of the deck, we are facing a level 7 Flying Squid with Reach. It is one of the widely used cards with Kelya because of it's well rounded stats of 3 melee attack, 5 speed and 9 hp. At level 6 and above the card is even better with Blind.
Position 363In the third position, the opponent decided to play a level 3 Baakjira, the mammoth tank with no attack but insane abilities like Void Slow Strengthen and Heal. This is one tough card to take down because of it's whopping 13 hp combined with these abilities.
Position 472Like us, the opponent too has decided to play a level 2 River Hellondale in the fourth position.
Position 538In the fifth spot, we will be facing a level 8 Pelacor Bandit with 3 melee damage, 6 speed and 4 hp combined with abilities like Sneak and Flying. This is one of the most used modern reward cards from the Water splinter that has recently been out of print and creating a havoc in the market.
Position 668Unsurprisingly, we will be facing a level 8 Deeplurker at the last spot.

THE HIGHLIGHTS :

  • Round 1:

In the first round, none of the teams were able to draw the first blood as the match was pretty evenly poised as expected.

  • Round 2:

In round two, we finally see an elimination as our Deeplurker comes to the spotlight with an important kill of the opponent's River Hellondale. Other than that, we do not see much action in this round.

  • Round 3:

Third round again was missing any causality as the battle was turning out to be very exciting one.

  • Round 4:

In this round, the opponent team's Deeplurker takes out our Wave Brood, but thankfully the Rier Hellondale used her Resurrect to bring it back adding to the frustration of the opponent.

  • Round 5:

image.png

In the fifth round, the opponent team's Djinn Oshannus was finally able to get the better of our Legionnaire Alvar which looked like a heavy blow for us.

  • Round 6:

image.png

At the very beginning of the round, the Djinn Oshannus was eliminated by the poison inflicted by our Deeplurker in the last round. However, later in this round, we also loose our Wave Brood by a heavy blow from the opponent's Deeplurker. Luckily for us, the Angelic Mandarin gets us the important kill of the Deeplurker in the last turn of the round driving us closer to the victory.

  • Round 7:

image.png

In round seven, the opponent fought back as the Flying Squid eliminates the Venari Wavesmith. But soon after the Deeplurker took the revenge by taking out the Flying Squid.

  • Round 8:

image.png

In this round, we try to get past the Baakjira mostly but was unsuccessful. Let's see what happens in the next round.

  • Round 9:

In this round our star of the match, Deeplurker finally takes out the Baakjira as we move very close to victory.

  • Round 10:

And surely, in round 10, we get our victory as the Deeplurker gets yet another kill as it eliminates the last card from the opponent's deck, Pelacor Bandit.

Did My Strategy Work?
My strategy was to have our card of the week, Legionnaire Alvar stand resiliently against the opponent and we added more protection to him with the additional armor of Kelya and Venari Wavesmith and outstanding the heavy blows from Djinn Oshannus and Flying Squid for 4 rounds is not a matter of joke.
And our Legionnaire Alvar was able to sustain 4 rounds as the Deeplurker was able to shine like it did. Additionally, though playing Wave Brood in Aimless rule set seemed to be a questionable decision at first, since the opponent had a melee heavy team, placing Wave Brood in the battle turned out to be a wise move. Needless to say, the Demoralize debuff played a vital role in the battle too.

Do I like Legionnaire Alvar? Why or why not?
Countering magic attackers is very important in Splinterlands. And having a neutral tank that is able to sustain decent amount of magic damage is an absolute game changer as we can play it with any splinter whenever we feel an ambush of magic attack is incoming. Legionnaire Alvar is a very well rounded tank that deals decent amount of damage too. No wonder, it is very widely used and very often finds a spot in my line up.
