ENGLISH

Hello, movie and tv lovers. Today I want to share with you a summary and interpretation of a movie that I recently liked a lot and that I think that every newbie of horror should see in order to learn to analyze the stories of the movies and interpret them in their own way, this has many ways to understand it and I'm going to give you mine.

A few days ago, I was watching again one of the movies that are often shown on Space channel and I found it very good even though it may seem a little confusing, it is called "The Witch" and the story is completely literal as it is precisely about that, the urban legend of the witch who kidnapped children and had a pointy nose and warts on her face. But this film shows us a slightly different aspect, deeper not in the witch as such but in the people who feared these creatures, if this legend was real or not they managed to portray in a convincing way what it would be like to live at that time surrounded by possible evil witches and only having faith as a weapon and how sometimes even this was not enough.

Let's talk about:
The Witch

Sinopsis:

New England, 1630. A married couple of Christian settlers, with five children, live near a forest that, according to popular belief, is dominated by evil. When the newborn son disappears and the crops fail to grow, the family members rebel against each other: a supernatural evil lurks in the nearby forest.
Link

As the synopsis explains, the plot revolves around a family of religious people who settle on the outskirts of a forest where no one had wanted to live before because of the legend that surrounds it: it is rumored that there lives a witch. This family of course clings to their faith in order to form their own colony with their own beliefs but when everything starts to go wrong is when the true demons within each of them come out.

This is a film created by Robert Eggers and starring the beautiful Anya Taylor Joy (Split, The Queen's Gambit) giving the role of Thomasin, the eldest daughter of the family in charge of helping her mother in the housework as well as taking care of her younger siblings.

I consider it a horror film without jumpscares, because it is not only about the legend of the witch as its title says but more about how this legend and what it represents can affect an entire family even without having made a direct presence. It is a film that leaves you immersed from the moment the first tragedy happens (which is a few minutes later) and the atmosphere of discomfort on the part of the members (especially the mother) is palpable and believable. I will now explain the film in detail.

PicsArt_06-14-07.04.05.png

Summary

At the beginning of the film we are shown a text that clarifies that the story is based on legends and real writings of the time. That is, the director compiled the details about the witches of that time and used them to bring us this film and to be able to stick as closely as possible to what could have been a reality at the time.

The protagonist family was exiled from the colony where they lived in comfort because the father decided to challenge the religious beliefs that were practiced in that colony, becoming much more radical and refusing to change the way he professed his faith he preferred to have them all expelled instead of leaving his pride aside (first mistake). From here we can see how they settle in the famous dark forest to found their own colony and plant vegetables to eat.

The main event happens when Thomasin, the eldest daughter, is entrusted by her mother to take care of baby Sam for a while while the others are busy with other chores. In a matter of seconds baby Sam disappears from her eyes (and from her life) without her being able to do anything to prevent it, the worst happens later as we are given to understand that he was taken away by the witch of the forest.

Some time later, we see how this loss has greatly affected the family relationship starting with a mother who shows great resentment against her daughter as she blames her for Sam's loss and even suspects that she herself did something to him, a father who takes advantage of this resentment to do things that are wrong knowing that he will not be blamed as everyone will automatically point to Thomasin when something bad happens, a brother who being deprived of interaction with the rest of the world feels a strange attraction to his own sister (he's a child, he can't control it) and younger twins who are spoiled with no empathy whatsoever and for some reason are always talking to the black goat (Black Phillip) in the family barn.

When the father's orchard yields absolutely nothing to harvest and their attempts to hunt dinner in the woods are also unsuccessful they begin to consider selling (yes, selling) Thomasin to a family as a servant in order to get some money, the younger brother being so attached to her doesn't want that to happen so he himself goes into the woods to try to hunt some animal and Thomasin goes with him as he doesn't want to leave him alone. Of course, the two are separated with Thomasin unconscious and Caleb is caught (or rather seduced) by a mysterious woman who is revealed to also be a witch. Thomasin manages to alert his father after waking up and later they find Caleb near the stable looking exhausted and sick.

From here everything becomes murkier as no one knows what is happening to Caleb and they can only assume he was bewitched, everyone starts to suspect of course Thomasin who in turn accuses the twins for always talking to that goat, the mother distrusts everyone, the father feels he loses control of his family and his faith and decides to lock his remaining children in the stable until he proves if any of them are witches or not.

Here Thomasin and the twins are revealed as neither is involved in witchcraft and do not know what is going on, being forced to spend the night with the goats the mother ends up plunged into madness for having lost her two most precious children, the father ends up being killed by the same black goat and the twins are allegedly kidnapped by the witch of the forest while Thomasin slept next to them.

To no one's surprise, Thomasin is the only survivor with her mother of all the horror that happened the day before and the last one ends up believing that her daughter is a witch who killed her family so she tries to kill her too as revenge for all the pain she thinks she put her through starting with taking the little baby Sam but Thomasin kills her first in self-defense and ends up completely lost, traumatized and alone in that ugly house near the forest with all her family dead.

Tired of everything, Thomasin ends up convincing the black goat to talk to her as she did with the twins and it does (revealing to be the devil) and proposes her to have a better life to which she accepts and walks with Black Phillip to the forest where you can finally see all the witches responsible for the family tragedy dancing around a campfire and then begin to float, Thomasin watches fascinated to also begin to float while laughing unhinged and disappears along with the others.

Interpretation

"If that's what they say I am then that's what I must be"

This was what I could interpret, Thomasin was a girl with dreams, she wanted to do more than just serve at home and take care of children but for that year this was almost impossible, at least back then it was very common to accuse a person of witchcraft just for thinking or behaving out of the religious and social standards.

Everyone in the family is proud, selfish and hypocritical, the father takes advantage of the hatred that the mother has for his own daughter to steal a valuable family cup and sell it, leaving everyone to think that Thomasin was responsible and to continue his life as if nothing happened, the twins are just plain bad people (and being children is no excuse), they make a mockery of their brother Caleb's death and accuse Thomasin of witchcraft left and right (it doesn't help that she told them she was just to scare them into stopping bothering her).

The poor girl has nothing going for her since in all the tragedies that happened she was always or was always alone with the victim so she has no way to prove it wasn't her no matter how hard she tries, her mother despises her and uses her to vent her spite, her father doesn't take her seriously and is her scapegoat, the twins make fun of her for fun and although her brother Caleb seems to love her he also has an unhealthy desire for her so no one ever sees her as a person but as someone of use for their emotions and actions.

Each one is falling under their own weight, each one ends up being finished by their own dark desires and feelings and this is what the witches used to be able to recruit Thomasin to their coven, she's exhausted and having lost faith in humanity (if your own mother tries to kill you it is not surprising that you lose hope in the world) decides to surrender and become part of that world to which everyone thought she already belonged, she ended up making a diabolical pact in exchange for freedom, in exchange for a life without worries, in exchange for a life without guilt and contempt, without being the object of any other human being. This is the perfect example of how repeatedly accusing a person of being something they are not can end up turning them into exactly that.

PicsArt_06-14-07.04.05.png

Do I recommend it?

I totally recommend it if you are not a person who expects jumpscares and paranormal creatures or demonic possessions in every horror movie you watch or if you are just starting out with this genre and want something that is not far fetched and graphic, as I said before this movie is not creepy because of the supernatural but rather because of how realistic they paint us the scenario of a dysfunctional family to the point of insanity and later death. It made me think how many times this could have happened in 1630 where a girl made a mistake or was a little different and was accused of witchcraft causing her life to be a complete disgrace, how you could just point your finger and yell "Witch!" And suddenly you had half the town wanting to hang you alive.

It's a well made film that tells an urban legend in an excellent way, it doesn't need to delve into the witch herself to really show the evil she can possess, it's all done through the family using their own feelings against them until they are finished, it has tension and the performances are very good. I recommend it if you want to experience a little psychological genre that leaves you thinking and uncomfortable at the same time. If you already watched it, then tell me did you like it? Why?

See you soon!
