Killer Mermaid is Low budget but the fun type

You might be used to movies about pretty mermaids turning full human, having to hide their identity, and even falling in love. Well, brace up because this is not your regular mermaid movie, not only does she have killer looks, she's a killer mermaid.

Killer mermaid, also known as Mamula is a Serbian horror film released in 2014. It features Kristina Klebe (Kelly) and Natalia Guslistaya (Lucy), who play two American women who go on a vacation to the coast of Montenegro to catch up on old times and enjoy the sun. They link up with an old schoolmate, Alex (Slobodan Stefanovic) who happens to be Lucy's ex. Unfortunately, Lucy's plan of getting back with Alex doesn't pull through as Alex comes along with his fiance, Yasmin (Sofia Rajovic) and things are a bit awkward between the trio.

Soon after, a young couple, Ana and Sergej appear to be having fun late at night by the beach but they're interrupted by some strange singing. The strange sound hypnotizes Sergej and he leaps into the water leaving a frightened Ana. A creepy man who's been moving around attacks Ana with a hook, killing her.

Off to Mamula

Bocan, one of Alex's beach buddies suggests the group go on to the historic isle of Mamula just for the fun of it. They're warned by an old guy not to go there but they do so anyway. On getting there, they explore the old military fort and spot a guy (who happens to be the same guy that killed Ana) pouring a bucket of blood and human parts into a well.

The very creepy guy realizes the group's presence and goes ahead to deflate their boat, beginning a long, horrific chase to kill every one of them. At some point during the chase, Kelly spots the top half of the mermaid and assumes she's a captive of the creepy guy hunting them. They try saving her only to realize she's a mermaid and she hypnotizes guys with her singing leading them to their death.

Kelly is the last woman standing as Yasmin is killed by the creepy guy and Lucy by the mermaid. Kelly and Bocan find their way out of the isle using a map of the fort they found and they run into Nico, the same guy that warned them not to go there. Nico explains to them how he was part of the team of engineers sent years before to build the tunnel linking the isle to the mainland.

They ran into the mermaid and she killed every one of the engineers except him. It turns out he wasn't the only survivor as the creepy guy working with the mermaid was one of the engineers. He had since been a lover to the mermaid and feeds her human meat. One of the mermaid's recent feed, Ana, happens to be the daughter of Nico and he came back to hunt down the mermaid after Ana's disappearance.

Will Nico together with what's left of the little group catch the big fish eventually? I'd leave you to find out.

Low budget never felt so good....

The movie started off really boring for me especially because it isn't a blockbuster type. The horror part was delayed and the mermaid didn't get screen time until almost the end. For once, a mermaid wasn't looking like a tilapia, this one looked like some other deep-sea fish and it was quite impressive. The mermaid's hypnotic tune is the most annoying sound I've heard my whole life. Why did it have to sound that bad?

I like how the actions of the characters are so movie-style predictable but they do it anyway.

"That place is dangerous, don't go there".
"Yay, we're going to go there because that makes for a fun movie"

It wasn't lazy, just fun. The actors did quite a good job too except that awkward mermaid moving like an earthworm. The two creepy-looking guys look alike so it was a bit confusing who the actual killer was. In all, I liked that this was different from all the mermaid movies I had seen before.

I'd rate Killer Mermaid a 6 out of 10. Not bad for a low-budget film.
