Art can stimulate us to do many things, not only beautiful, sweet, warm and affable things, but also disgust, revulsion, dread and it shows us graphically all the shit in the world.
Cinema turns us into visual spectators of even the darkest, most aberrant, filthy, terrifying and disgusting things we can come across in our lives. The 'Body Horror', is a subgenre that shows us all this horrible art about body modification and bad manipulation of the body: mutilations, mutations, tortures, genetic modifications and many other things.
It's the land of horror where our guts churn as we watch every murky detail, and thinking about this reaction, I have made a list of the Body Horror movies that impacted me the most throughout my life; leaving me with both nightmares and my way of seeing the real world today.

El arte puede estimularnos muchas cosas, no solo cosas hermosas, dulces, cálidas y afables, también repugnancia, asco, pavor y nos enseña gráficamente toda la mierda del mundo.
El cine nos convierte en espectadores visuales de hasta lo más oscuro, aberrante, inmundo, terrorífico y asqueroso que nos podemos topar en nuestras vidas. El ‘Body Horror’, es un subgénero que nos muestra todo este arte horrible sobre la modificación corporal y mal manipulación del cuerpo: mutilaciones, mutaciones, torturas, modificaciones genéticas y muchas cosas más.
Es el terreno del horror en donde nuestras entrañas se revuelven al observar cada detalle turbio, y pensando en esta reacción, he hecho una lista de las películas de Body Horror que más me impactaron a lo largo de mi vida; dejándome tanto pesadillas como mi manera de ver el mundo real hoy en día.
1.- The Thing
This masterpiece by director and master of horror John Carpenter, did cause me intense nightmares when I was a teenager and an intense fear of the dark, especially cold places. Truly, no young person should watch it and much less if they have a fragile stomach, as there are scenes that are too nauseating to digest.
It is a film from the 80s, and with that I say a lot, as the disturbing art presented at that time seems to me to be more terrifying. To give a brief synopsis, the film is about an alien creature that has the ability to transform itself into other living beings, which allows it to camouflage itself among the others and commit its terrifying acts.
It is one of the horror classics that has impacted me the most, especially because of the strong graphic scenes, especially gruesome makeup, and terrible music that, when it plays, you know something is not going to go right. Plus, it's directed by Carpenter, his films are very resonant in the history of horror cinema, but this one specifically made me feel such an intense fear that I had to stay away from TV for a while.
1.- La Cosa de Otro Mundo
Esta obra maestra del director y maestro del terror John Carpenter, sí que me causó intensas pesadillas cuando era adolescente y un miedo intenso a la oscuridad, especialmente a los lugares fríos. De verdad que ningún joven debería verla y mucho menos si es de estómago frágil, pues se presentan escenas demasiado nauseabundas para digerir.
Es una película de la década de los 80s, y ya con eso digo mucho, pues el arte perturbador que se presentaba en aquella época me parece que era más terrorífico. Para hacer una sinopsis breve, la película trata sobre una criatura alienígena que tiene la capacidad de transformarse en otros seres vivientes, lo cual le permite camuflajearse entre los demás y cometer sus actos terroríficos.
Es uno de los clásicos del terror que más me ha impactado, especialmente por las fuertes escenas gráficas, maquillaje especialmente horripilante, y una terrible música que, al sonar, sabes que algo no va a salir bien. Además, está dirigida por Carpenter, sus películas son muy resonadas en la historia del cine del terror, pero esta en específico sí que me hizo sentir un miedo tan intenso que tuve que alejarme de la televisión por un tiempo.
2.- Hellraiser (1987)
This is another classic horror movie that I also saw when I was very young, back then I didn't have that fascination for Body Horror as I do now, therefore, this kind of movies caused me an immeasurable dread.
Also coming from the 80s, Clive Barker, who is the director and writer of the whole Hellraiser saga, tells us about creatures that are able to step into our world by means of a 'puzzle box' called The Lament Configuration. These creatures are called 'Cenobites' and the first time I saw them and the things they were capable of doing, I couldn't sleep a wink for many nights, causing me heavy nights as I kept thinking about these horrible beings.
The sadistic horror, mixed with masochistic and sinister pleasures, and with appearances that starkly allude to this subculture, is stomach churning. I entirely recommend this version, the remake that was released this year on the Hulu platform, is also good, but after years of watching the sequels, it no longer makes the same impact, making this remake forgettable for me.
2.- Puerta Al Infierno (1987)
Este es otro clásico del cine de horror que también vi de muy joven, en aquel entonces no tenía esa fascinación por el Body Horror como lo tengo ahora, por lo tanto, este tipo de películas me causaban un pavor inconmensurable.
También proveniente de los años 80s, Clive Barker, que es el director y escritor de toda la saga de Hellraiser, nos habla sobre criaturas que son capaces de pisar nuestro mundo por medio de una ‘caja rompecabezas’ llamada La Configuración del Lamento. Estas criaturas son llamadas ‘Cenobitas’ y la primera vez que los vi y las cosas que eran capaces de hacer, no pude pegar el ojo por muchas noches, causándome trasnochos fuertes ya que no dejaba de pensar en esos horribles seres.
El horror sádico, mezclados con placeres masoquistas y siniestros, y con apariencias que hace alusión de manera descarnada sobre esta subcultura, es algo que te revuelve el estómago. Recomiendo enteramente esta versión, el remake que se lanzó este año en la plataforma Hulu, también es bueno, pero después de años de haber visto las secuelas, ya no causa el mismo impacto, haciendo este remake olvidable para mí.
3.- Hostel
This is one of the hardest movies for me to watch, I still can't stand some scenes, they are too catastrophic for my mind. I saw it when I was in college, alone in my room with only the light from the window illuminating the space. I was bleary-eyed and my bowels almost churned.
A film directed by Eli Roth and originally written by Quentin Tarantino, who also participated as one of the producers. The story is as intriguing as it is terrifying, as it is about two American boys who travel around Europe looking for fun, until they run into two beautiful girls in Slovakia who will lead them to a cruel fate.
If you are a person with a very, very delicate stomach, I warn you, do not watch this movie. It has overly graphic scenes, the makeup is very well done, and also the performances are phenomenal. You can really feel the fear and pain of the unlucky characters, I still can't stand some things and I've seen it twice a long time ago. The truth is that I can't stand the mutilations and dismemberments, they are things that give me more than 'cringe' and I can hardly erase them from my mind.
3.- Hostal
Esta es una de las películas más difíciles de ver para mí, todavía no puedo soportar algunas escenas, son demasiado catastróficas para mi mente. La vi cuando estaba en la Universidad, estando solo en mi cuarto y con únicamente la luz de la ventana iluminando el espacio. Tenía los ojos desorbitados y los intestinos casi revueltos.
Un film dirigido por Eli Roth y escrito originalmente por Quentin Tarantino, el cual también participó como uno de los productores. La historia es tan intrigante como aterradora, pues trata sobre dos chicos norteamericanos que viajan por Europa buscando diversión, hasta que se topan en Eslovaquia con dos chicas hermosas que los llevarán a un destino cruel.
Si eres una persona con un estómago muy, pero muy delicado, te lo advierto, no veas esta película. Tiene escenas demasiado gráficas, el maquillaje está muy bien hecho y, además, las actuaciones son fenomenales. En verdad que puedes sentir el miedo y el dolor de los personajes con mala suerte, a mí me cuesta soportar algunas cosas todavía y eso que la he visto hace tiempo dos veces. La verdad es que no puedo soportar las mutilaciones y desmembramientos, son cosas que me dan más que ‘cringe’ y difícilmente puedo borrarlas de mi mente.
4.- A Serbian Film
I confess that the first time I saw this movie, I watched it with very high expectations, however, that didn't stop it from impacting me as it did. It was directed and written by Srđan Spasojević and produced by him as well, although the movie didn't gross much money, as it was banned in many countries, you can still enjoy it and get disturbed on different online movie platforms.
This strange thriller tells us about a former porn actor who now lives with his current wife and son, but is contacted by a film company to star in a movie that has never been made before, which, according to its director, will generate a lot of money to improve the economy in Serbia.
As we follow the story, we will witness strange scenes, behavior alluding to madness, pedophilia, necrophilia, even something much worse, which will be revealed in a twist that left me speechless for a very long time.
I saw this film out of curiosity, as I found comments about it that it was one of the most disturbing films ever made, and I thought so. The film makes reference to Serbian cinema, its miserable economy and in the most shady and denigrating of society. Truly one of the most shocking and disgusting things I have ever seen in my life, I still can't forget that unexpected twist.
4.- Un Film Serbio
Confieso que la primera vez que vi esta película, la vi con expectativas muy altas, sin embargo, eso no impidió que me impactara como lo hizo. Fue dirigida y escrita por Srđan Spasojević y producida también por este, aunque la película no recaudó mucho dinero, ya que fue prohibida en muchos países, todavía puedes disfrutarla y perturbarte en las diferentes plataformas de películas online.
Este extraño thriller nos habla de un ex actor porno que vive ahora con su actual esposa e hijo, pero que es contactado por una empresa de cine para que protagonice una película que nunca se ha hecho antes, la cual, según su director, generará mucho dinero para mejorar la economía en Serbia.
A medida que vayamos siguiendo la historia, seremos testigos de escenas extrañas, comportamientos alusivos a la locura, pedofilia, necrofilia, incluso algo mucho peor, que se dejará revelar en un giro que me dejó boquiabierto por un muy buen rato.
Vi esta película por curiosidad, ya que encontré comentarios sobre ella de que era una de las películas más perturbadoras que se habían hecho, y así me pareció. El film hace referencia al cine serbio, su miserable economía y en lo más turbio y denigrante de la sociedad. De verdad que es una de las cosas más impactantes y asquerosas que he visto en mi vida, todavía no puedo olvidar ese giro inesperado.
5.- The Human Centipede
From the inhuman to the disgusting and more inhuman, comes The Human Centipede, one of the most disgusting films in the history of horror cinema. It was written and directed by Tony Six, a man with a rather acid sense of humor, who managed to get his project financed.
The plot is very bizarre and talks about a demented surgeon who kidnaps three tourists: a Japanese and two American women, and surgically joins them through their digestive tracts, joining the mouth with the anus, thus creating a kind of human centipede. If you haven't seen it, and you're just going by what I'm telling you, you're probably already wrinkling your face in disgust.
Just using your imagination is enough to generate several traumas. It is one of the most nauseating and sickening things I have had the horror of witnessing, so much so, that I have not wanted to see the other two sequels that were made of this film, since one was enough for me.
This German version is unforgettable because of the graphic scenes that are presented to us, and that also do not allow you to keep your eyes on the screen, the truth is that I could not leave it off my list after the traumas it caused me. Despite all that and being banned in many countries around the world, it is one of the most famous Body Horror references we have in the history of cinema.
5.- El Ciempiés Humano
De lo inhumano a lo asqueroso y más inhumano, llega El Ciempiés Humano, una de las películas más repugnantes en la historia del cine de terror. Fue escrita y dirigida por Tony Six, un hombre con un sentido del humor bastante ácido, el cual logró que financiaran su proyecto.
La trama es muy bizarra y habla sobre un demente cirujano que secuestra a tres turistas: un japonés y dos norteamericanas, y los une quirúrgicamente a través de sus tractos digestivos, uniendo la boca con el ano, creando así una especie de ciempiés humano. Si no la has visto, y solo te dejas llevar por esto que te estoy contando, probablemente ya estés arrugando la cara del asco.
Con solo el uso de tu imaginación ya es suficiente para generar varios traumas. Es una de las cosas más nauseabundas y enfermas que he tenido el horror de presenciar, tanto así, que no he querido ver las otras dos secuelas que se hicieron de este film, ya que uno me bastó y me sobró.
Esta versión alemana es inolvidable por las escenas gráficas que nos presentan, y que además no te permiten mantener la mirada en la pantalla, la verdad que no podía dejarla fuera de mi lista después de los traumas que me provocó. A pesar de todo eso y de ser prohibida en muchos países del mundo, es uno de los referentes del Body Horror más famosos que tenemos en la historia del cine.
Conclusions
Sometimes out of curiosity we get into the most repulsive and bizarre movies, but that stimulus most of the time turns into admiration, because art is like that; it has the function of provoking reactions in us that sometimes we do not like and make us see the most filthy.
These films were the ones that most provoked in me those sensations that to this day I can't overcome, the scenes they present I still can't stand them, and more than once they caused me strong nightmares.
Not only are they disturbing scenes of blood dripping bodies, terribly illicit acts or genetic mutations, they are interesting and murky plots, that leave you hooked until they take you to those moments that I can't even watch. If you think you have a strong stomach and want to watch any of these movies on my list, prepare for the worst.
Conclusiones
A veces por curiosidad nos adentramos a lo más repulsivo y bizarro del cine, pero ese estimulo en la mayoría de las veces se convierte en admiración, pues el arte es así; tiene la función de provocar reacciones en nosotros que a veces no nos gustan y nos hacen ver lo más inmundo.
Estas películas fueron las que más me provocaron esas sensaciones que hasta hoy en día no puedo superar, las escenas que presentan todavía no puedo soportarlas, y más de una vez me causaron fuertes pesadillas.
No solo son escenas perturbadoras de cuerpos chorreantes de sangre, actos terriblemente ilícitos o mutaciones genéticas, son tramas interesantes y turbias, que te dejan enganchado hasta llevarte a esos momentos que yo no puedo ni ver. Si piensas que eres de estómago fuerte y quieres ver alguna de estas películas de mi lista, prepárate para lo peor.
