Classic horror films have always been an object of my interest and what better way to pay tribute than by reviewing one of the 25 best classic films in the history of cinema according to Time.

Una diabólica trama que te adentra en un misterio intrigante dejándote enganchado por mucho tiempo. Las expresiones de los personajes otorgan un enigma deslumbrante produciendo más sabor al asunto. Los filmes clásicos de terror siempre han sido objeto de mi interés y, que mejor manera de rendir tributo que haciendo una reseña de una de las 25 mejores películas clásicas de la historia del cine según el Time.

Les diaboliques (The Diabolicals), is a 1955 French psychological horror film that has become one of the most famous cult classics in the world of cinema. It was directed by Henri Georges Clouzot and written by the same director along with Jérome Géronimi, René Masson and Frédéric Grende, based on the novel Celle qui n'était plus by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac. It was produced by Vera Films and the French film distribution company Cinédis. It starredSimone Signoret, Véra Clouzot, Paul Meurisse and Charles Vanel.
For the music part, the work was done by Georges van Parys. In the photography, showing us some excellent pictures we have Armand Thirard and in the editing and special effects we have Madeleine Gug.

Fue dirigida por Henri Georges Clouzot y escrita por el mismo director junto con Jérome Géronimi, René Masson y Frédéric Grende, basándose en la novela Celle qui n'était plus de Pierre Boileau y Thomas Narcejac. Fue producida por Vera Films y la empresa de distribución cinematográfica francesa Cinédis. Estuvo estelarizada porSimone Signoret, Véra Clouzot, Paul Meurisse y Charles Vanel.
Para la parte de la música el trabajo fue realizado por Georges van Parys. En la fotografía, mostrándonos unos excelentes cuadros tenemos a Armand Thirard y en el montaje y efectos especiales se encuentra Madeleine Gug.
Plot of the film
This story is about a school principal named Michel Delasalle (Paul Meurisse) who is a real bully with the teachers and students of the school, and not only with them but also with his wife Christina (Véra Clouzot) and his mistress Nicole Horner (Simone Signoret), both of whom are also teachers at the school. Christina is a woman of Venezuelan origin, heiress of a fortune and who has heart problems. Nicole, tired of Michel's abuses, convinces Christina to execute a plan to murder him and get rid of him once and for all, to which Christina agrees and both get down to work.
From this moment on, a circle of crazy tension begins, which is only suffered by Christina's deteriorating health, who still has doubts about committing such a dreadful crime, but Nicole convinces her that it is necessary since her husband will never leave her alone, unless he is dead, so Christina regains her courage and continues with the plan. The psychological terror introduced in the film is an atmosphere of mystery, strange things begin to happen that gradually wear down the protagonist and leave us at the mercy of two truths that are brewing within the story; what is really going on, is there someone else who knows the secret of these two women and now they are entangled in the macabre game of an eyewitness? It won't be known until later.
The title of the film Les Diaboliques translated as The Diabolicals seems to be more of a hoax, a premise so that the viewer until near the end of the film realizes that the real macabre act lies behind the idea before our eyes. Of course, the film has been spectacular in taking us by the hand with intrigue making us jump from one surprise to another, creating an unsuspected atmosphere, one that for me, if I had seen this film in the first place a long time before, would have been much more shocking.
Trama de la película
Esta historia trata sobre un director de escuela llamado Michel Delasalle (Paul Meurisse) que es un verdadero abusador con los profesores y alumnos del colegio, y no solo con ellos sino también con su esposa Christina (Véra Clouzot) y con su amante Nicole Horner (Simone Signoret), ambas también ejercen como profesoras en la escuela. Christina es una mujer de origen venezolano heredera de una fortuna y que tiene problemas del corazón. Nicole, cansada de los abusos de Michel, convence a Christina de ejecutar un plan para asesinarlo y deshacerse de él de una vez por todas, a lo que Christina accede y ambas toman manos a la obra.
A partir de este momento comienza un circulo de tensión descabellada, que solo es sufrida por la deteriorada salud de Christina, la cual aún tiene dudas de cometer tan espantoso crimen, pero Nicole la convence de que es necesario ya que su esposo jamás la dejará en paz, a menos que esté muerto, así que Christina retoma el valor y continúa con el plan. El terror psicológico introducido en la película es una atmósfera de misterio, empiezan a ocurrir cosas extrañas que desgastan paulatinamente a la protagonista y nos deja a merced de dos verdades que se están gestando dentro de la historia; ¿qué está pasando en realidad? ¿Hay alguien más que sabe el secreto de estas dos mujeres y ahora quedaron enredadas en el macabro juego de un testigo ocular? No se sabrá hasta más adelante.
El título de la película Les Diaboliques por su traducción Las Diabólicas parece ser más bien un engaño, una premisa para que el espectador hasta casi al final de la película se dé cuenta que el verdadero acto macabro se encuentra detrás de la idea ante nuestros ojos. Desde luego, la película ha sido espectacular en llevarnos de la mano con intriga haciéndonos saltar de una sorpresa a otra, creando un ambiente insospechable, uno que para mí, si hubiera visto esta película en primer lugar mucho tiempo antes, hubiera sido mucho más impactante.
I will tell the following with spoilers in mind, as the plot is extremely interesting. Christina and Nicole travel by van to a small town miles from Paris staying in a dilapidated building where Nicole is the owner, there they carry out their plan having with them a series of powerful sedatives to give to Michel. Christina begins the plan by calling her husband, asking him for a divorce. Michel travels to where she is to prevent it. During the conversation with her husband, Christina gives him the sedatives mixed with liquor, but she gets nervous and overdoses, leaving Michel apparently dead. Nicole begins to think quickly about the situation and, together with Christina, they take Michel's body back to school and dump it in the pool of water overnight. There they wait for the body to float up in about two or three days to make it all look like an accident.
A retired police officer named Alfred (Charles Vanel), offers to help Nicole unravel the mystery, while Christina's health deteriorates with remorse. Michel's corpse disappears, Christina seems to be haunted by a shadow that follows her to the bathtub. Nicole is still trying to find out what happened to Michel's body. Alfred is in search of the real culprit. It's all a haze of mystery rising everywhere.
No wonder this film served as inspiration for the famous filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock in Psycho (1960) and for the famous horror writer Stephen King, the enigmatic twists and surprises leave a deep trail in our minds. The film won an award as Best Foreign Film at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards in 1955. It has been the subject of adaptations such as: Reflections of Murder (1974), House of Secrets (1993) and a version: Diabolique (1996). I give it a rating of 9/10 making it one of my favorite horror classics.
Contaré lo siguiente con ánimos de hacer spoilers, ya que la trama es sumamente interesante. Christina y Nicole viajan en furgoneta a una pequeña ciudad a kilómetros de París quedándose en un edificio ruinoso donde Nicole es la dueña, allí llevan su plan a cabo teniendo consigo una serie de potentes sedantes para dárselos a Michel. Christina comienza el plan llamando a su esposo, pidiéndole el divorcio. Michel viaja hasta donde ella se encuentra para impedirlo. Durante la conversación con su esposo, Christina le da de tomar los sedantes mezclándolos con licor, pero se pone nerviosa y se excede con la dosis, dejando a Michel aparentemente muerto. Nicole comienza a pensar rápido ante la situación y, junto con Christina, llevan el cuerpo de Michel de vuelta al colegio y lo arrojan en la alberca con agua durante la noche. Allí esperan a que el cuerpo salga a flote en unos dos o tres días para que todo parezca que fue un accidente.
Un agente de policía retirado llamado Alfred (Charles Vanel), se ofrece a ayudar a Nicole para desentrañar el misterio, mientras que la salud de Christina se deteriora a causa del remordimiento.
