A thriller that deals with one of the most atrocious problems that exist in the world, where we will see statistics of thousands of people who are victims of this illegal activity. It is estimated that between 500,000 to 700,000 thousand girls are victims of child trafficking, an approximate but not exact number issued by the U.S. State Department. The film I am about to present touches on this issue, adding a powerful impetus for revenge.

Un thriller que trata sobre una de las problemáticas más atroces que existen en el mundo, donde veremos estadísticas de miles de personas que son víctimas de esta actividad ilegal. Se estima que entre 500.000 a 700.000 mil niñas son víctimas de tráfico de menores, una cantidad aproximada pero no exacta emitida por el departamento de estado de los Estados Unidos. La película que vengo a presentar a continuación toca esta problemática, agregando un poderoso impulso de venganza.

'I Am All Girls' is a South African thriller-style film original to the Netflix streaming service, released in the current year 2021, which has been one of the most watched films so far on the platform. It was directed by Donovan Marsh and also written by himself with the help of Wayne Fitzjohn, Marcell Greeff, Emile Leuvennink and Jarrod de Jong. The acting cast features Erica Wessels and Hlubi Mboya in the lead roles, along with Deon Lotz, Masasa Mbangeni, Lizz Meiring, Matt Stern, Brendon Daniels, Ben Kruger, among others. The film was produced by Nthibah Pictures for the movie and series platform Netflix, with a running time of 107 minutes.
Within the musical work is Brendan Jury who makes our ears ring with a sound both disturbing and sad. In the photography worked Trevor Calverley, with shots that focus mystery and expressions that we could only see if we were in this type of situation. I must say that the feature and its elements make the film a bit tedious, but none of that matters when the plot starts to become more and more interesting.

Fue dirigida por Donovan Marsh y también escrita por él mismo con la ayuda de Wayne Fitzjohn, Marcell Greeff, Emile Leuvennink y Jarrod de Jong. El reparto actoral está compuesto por Erica Wessels y Hlubi Mboya como protagonistas, junto con Deon Lotz, Masasa Mbangeni, Lizz Meiring, Matt Stern, Brendon Daniels, Ben Kruger, entre otros. La película fue producida por Nthibah Pictures para la plataforma de películas y series Netflix, con una duración de 107 minutos.
Dentro del trabajo musical se encuentra Brendan Jury quien hace timbrar nuestros oídos con un sonido tanto perturbador como triste. En la fotografía trabajó Trevor Calverley, con unos planos que enfocan misterio y expresiones que solo podríamos ver si nos encontráramos en este tipo de situaciones. Debo decir que el largometraje y sus elementos hacen del filme un poco tedioso, pero nada de eso importa cuando la trama comienza a volverse cada vez más interesante.
Plot of the film
A police officer in Johannesburg named Jodie Snyman (Erica Wessels) is in charge of an operation against child trafficking, where girls were taken from South Africa to the Middle East, specifically to Iran. There were not only white girls but also black girls extracted from the Ghettos and taken to special houses where they were kept for a while, and those who were no longer useful to them were killed or taken to brothels in the city. Things start to get difficult for the officer as the traffickers are always one step ahead and her operation is underfunded. Jodie's personality, in her first appearance, is that of an impetuous person, affected by the underage trafficking situation, and seeing that her operation is not giving the expected results, she is assigned to another case that deals with a man murdered in a park with three letters as initials engraved on his torso.
Jodie's friend, Ntombizonke Bapai (Hlubi Mboya) who works in the police forensics department, seems to be hiding a dark secret, staying out of her partner's investigation. Soon, Jodie realizes that the man murdered in the park was a pedophile who abducted and abused several girls in the past, including her own granddaughter. Subsequently, other murders of the same style occur, so Jodie deduces that it is a revenge killing.
Trama de la película
Una agente de policía en Johannesburgo llamada Jodie Snyman (Erica Wessels) es la encargada de una operación en contra del tráfico de menores, donde las niñas eran llevadas de Sudáfrica al Medio Oriente, específicamente a Irán. No solo había niñas blancas sino también niñas negras extraídas de los Guetos y llevadas a casas especiales donde las mantenían por un tiempo, y aquellas que ya no les servían, eran asesinadas o llevadas a prostíbulos de la ciudad. Las cosas comienzan a ponerse difíciles para la oficial ya que los traficantes siempre están a un paso más adelante y aparte que su operación no posee los fondos necesarios. La personalidad de Jodie, en su primera aparición, es de una persona impetuosa, afectada por la situación del tráfico de menores, y al ver que su operación no está dando los resultados esperados, es asignada a otro caso que trata sobre un hombre asesinado en un parque con tres letras como iniciales grabadas sobre su torso.
La amiga de Jodie, Ntombizonke Bapai (Hlubi Mboya) quien trabaja en el departamento de medicina forense de la policía, parece ocultar un oscuro secreto, manteniéndose al margen de la investigación de su compañera. Pronto, Jodie se da cuenta que el hombre asesinado en el parque era un pedófilo que secuestró y abusó de varias niñas en el pasado, incluso de su propia nieta. Posteriormente, ocurren otros asesinatos del mismo estilo, por lo que Jodie deduce que se trata de una venganza.
Instead of keeping the mystery, the film shows us the real serial killer in the first instance, who turns out to be Ntombizonke and from that moment on, we are revealed a series of flashbacks of her childhood where she was abused and later taken to a brothel where she spent a good part of her life. Ntombi's past left sequels in her mind, developing a thirst for revenge against all pedophiles and child traffickers, placing the initials of the names of missing girls on her victims' chests. She herself gives a meaning to her name: Ntombizonke Bapai (I am all the girls).
But despite being a revenge story, the movie focuses more on Jodie, who does not have a cruel past like Ntombi nor does she have a powerful motive to catch all the child traffickers and pedophiles in South Africa, other than that it is her job, it seems that the movie focuses more on her as the real heroine and not the one who is taking justice into her own hands. It seems absurd to me, in fact, it's quite illogical, and even more so when watching the scenes that come later, which I found to be a real slog.
Anyway, this is just my opinion and I am not the one to reproach the director about his work and why he took that direction of the story. Some critics say that it is because of a racist mentality in which a white heroine should be placed, not a black one, I can't deduce if this is true because critics sometimes exaggerate when they want to give their point of view or they get stuck in a single direction following that truth as a way. When I read a review I only take relevant from it before creating an opinion, as some can be too engrossing and more so when it comes to this type of topic.
Another aspect to highlight that calls my attention is the love relationship between Jodie and Ntombizonke, which the film leaves to the imagination of the viewer, but does not emphasize the homosexual relationship of these two protagonists, we only see snippets as some passionate glances, minimal moments of caresses and vague dialogues that do not give us many details. Perhaps it was not one of the themes that the film wanted to focus on, but it would have been interesting if the director and screenwriters had given some prominence to it.
The film as a thriller did not grab me, even though I am a big fan of this genre and it deals with a very strong theme such as child trafficking, where we can see a reality that is more than current in our world and until it stops being lucrative, sexual slavery of minors will never end. If you like you can take a look at it and give your opinion about your impressions, I give it a rating of 7/10, since there were details that were left floating inside the film.
En lugar de mantener el misterio, la película nos muestra al verdadero asesino en serie en primeras instancias, que resulta ser Ntombizonke y a partir de ese momento, se nos revelan una serie de flashbacks de su niñez donde fue abusada y posteriormente llevada a un prostíbulo donde pasó buena parte de su vida. El pasado de Ntombi dejó secuelas en su mente, desarrollando una sed de venganza en contra de todos los pedófilos y traficantes de menores, colocando en el pecho de sus víctimas las iniciales de los nombres de niñas desaparecidas. Ella misma le da un significado a su nombre: Ntombizonke Bapai (Yo soy todas las niñas).
Pero a pesar de ser una historia de venganza, la película se centra más en Jodie, quien no tiene un pasado cruel como el de Ntombi ni tiene un motivo poderoso para atrapar a todos los traficantes de menores y pedófilos de Sudáfrica, aparte de que es su trabajo, parece que la película se enfoca más en ella como la verdadera heroína y no a la que está haciendo justicia por su propia mano. Me parece absurdo, de hecho, es bastante ilógico, y más aún al ver las escenas que se avecinan posteriormente, las cuales me parecieron un verdadero bodrio.
En fin, esta es solo mi opinión y no soy quien para reprocharle al director sobre su trabajo y por qué tomó esa dirección de la historia. Algunas críticas dicen que es a causa de una mentalidad racista en el que se debía colocar a una heroína blanca, no negra, no puedo deducir si esto es cierto porque las críticas a veces exageran cuando quieren dar su punto de opinión o se enfrascan en una sola dirección siguiendo como camino esa verdad. Cuando leo una crítica solo tomo relevante de ella antes de crear una opinión, ya que algunas pueden ser demasiado absorbentes y más cuando se trata de este tipo de temas.
Otro aspecto a resaltar que me llama mucho la atención es la relación amorosa entre Jodie y Ntombizonke, la cual en la película dejan a imaginación del espectador, pero no hacen énfasis en sí de la relación homosexual de estas dos protagonistas, solo vemos retazos como algunas miradas pasionales, mínimos instantes de caricias y diálogos imprecisos que no nos otorgan muchos detalles. Quizás no era uno de los temas en que se quería enfocar la película pero hubiera sido interesante que el director y los guionistas le hubieran dado un poco de protagonismo a eso.
La película como thriller no me atrapó, a pesar de que soy un gran fanático de este género y que trata sobre un tema bastante fuerte como es el tráfico infantil, donde podemos ver una realidad que está más que vigente en nuestro mundo y hasta que no deje de ser lucrativo, la esclavitud sexual a menores de edad nunca va a acabar. Si gustas puedes echarle un vistazo y opinar sobre tus impresiones, yo le doy una calificación de 7/10, puesto que hubieron detalles que quedaron dentro de la película flotantes.
