What I like most about a story is how interesting and enveloping it can become, transmitting us with a series of images that strike our imagination and subtly incursion into our mind. As we enter a world parallel to our own, we are exhilarated by the wonders we will find there, something that 'Arrival' has provoked in me, inducing an intrigue that I have rarely felt from some films.

Lo que más me gusta de una historia es lo interesante y envolvente que puede convertirse, al transmitirnos con una serie de imágenes que golpean nuestra imaginación e incursionan con sutileza a nuestra mente. Al entrar en un mundo paralelo al nuestro, quedamos exhortos por las maravillas que allí vamos a encontrar, algo que ‘Arrival’ ha provocado en mí, induciéndome a una intriga que muy poco he sentido de algunas películas.

It was produced by FilmNation Entertainment, 21 Laps Entertainment, Lava Bear Films and Paramount Pictures with a budget of $47,000,000, grossing $201,058,767. It stars Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner in the lead roles, with Forest Whitaker and Michael Stuhlbarg in the cast.
Bradford Young is on photography, Jóhann Jóhannsson is on music, Joe Walker is on editing and costume design, and Renée April is on wardrobe. The film was shot in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, a space dazzling enough to leave us stunned by the story that unfolds.

Plot of the film
The story tells us about a renowned doctor in linguistics: Louise Banks (Amy Adams) who is required by the U.S. government to decipher the language of aliens who suddenly arrived on Earth, settling in 12 important points of the world. One of them, North American territory, specifically in the state of Montana. Panic begins to sweep the world, there is looting and desolation in the streets because of a supposed alien invasion, it seems that everything depends on Dr. Banks and her now partner Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), a doctor of physics who was also required by the government to decipher such an enigma.
The film focuses on both of them, for if they fail to clarify the true purpose of the aliens and their establishment on our planet, a worldwide catastrophe could occur. Will they succeed? Will they manage to decipher the strange means of communication used by the visitors in time before a war occurs?
During her interaction with the visitors, Louise discovers that they do not communicate with words but with a type of writing called: 'Semasiographic' a type of writing that is used only to communicate with signs without the interception of words or other phonetic sounds. The interesting thing about the film, for the viewer, are the visitors, but the background goes beyond that, something that we will find with the recurring events that we will contemplate.
Trama de la película
La historia nos habla sobre una reconocida doctora en lingüística: Louise Banks (Amy Adams) que es requerida por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos para descifrar el lenguaje de unos alienígenas que arribaron repentinamente a la Tierra, estableciéndose en 12 puntos importantes del mundo. Uno de ellos, territorio norteamericano, específicamente en el estado de Montana. El pánico comienza azotar el mundo, hay saqueos y desolación en las calles a causa de una supuesta invasión alienígena, parece que todo depende de la doctora Banks y su ahora compañero Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), un doctor en física que también fue requerido por el gobierno para descifrar tal enigma.
La película se centra en ambos, pues si no consiguen aclarar el verdadero propósito de los alienígenas y su establecimiento en nuestro planeta, podría ocurrir una catástrofe mundial. ¿Será que lo lograrán? ¿Conseguirán descifrar el extraño medio de comunicación que utilizan los visitantes a tiempo antes de que ocurra una guerra?
Durante su interacción con los visitantes, Louise descubre que ellos no se comunican con palabras sino con un tipo de escritura llamada: ‘Semasiográfica’ un tipo de escritura que se usa únicamente para comunicar con signos sin la intercepción de palabras u otros sonidos fonéticos. Lo interesante de la película, para el espectador, son los visitantes, pero el trasfondo va más allá de eso, cosa que podremos encontrar con los sucesos recurrentes que contemplaremos.
Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker) is in charge of answering the two essential questions that everyone wants to know: Why are they here and what is their purpose? Dr. Banks tries to reveal the riddles, but there is another one that suddenly presents itself to the protagonist.
The "Heptapeds", the name given to the aliens by scientists because of their unique seven-legged cephalopod-like appearance, begin to reveal in their writing a message of sorts that they want to convey to humans. As Banks tries to elucidate it, she begins to have strange visions or flashbacks of her life, moments she has never lived. From this moment on, we enter an atmosphere of confusion with the protagonist, but then things begin to become clearer if we pay enough attention.
Within one of Louise's multiple visions, we find references that help to understand the type of language used by the Heptapeds, for example, their writing turns out to be 'Palindrome', a type of writing that can be read both upside down and backwards, as the visitors can only communicate with symbols that they themselves generate with some kind of substance that they emit, the doctor in linguistics will use her knowledge to understand it and create a glossary of word meanings.
As things unfold, Lousie gradually realizes that she can read the language of the Heptapeds and that everything has to do with a weapon they want to offer to humanity. This concept is different, since the term 'weapon' is used by the aliens to refer to a 'tool' or 'gift', which is used to be able to see the future.
El coronel Weber (Forest Whitaker), es el encargado de dar respuesta a las dos preguntas esenciales que quiere saber todo el mundo: ¿Por qué están aquí? y ¿Cuál es su propósito? La doctora Banks intenta revelar los enigmas, pero hay otro que repentinamente se presenta ante la protagonista.
Los “Heptápedos”, nombre que les colocaron los científicos a los alienígenas, por su singular apariencia con siete patas parecidos a cefalópodos, comienzan a revelar en su escritura una especie de mensaje que quieren transmitir a los humanos. A medida que Banks trata de dilucidarlo, comienza a tener extrañas visiones o flashbacks de su vida, momentos que ella nunca ha vivido. A partir de este momento entramos en una atmosfera de confusión junto a la protagonista, pero luego las cosas comienzan a aclararse si colocamos la debida atención.
Dentro de una de las múltiples visiones de Louise, encontramos referencias que ayudan a entender el tipo de lenguaje que usan los Heptápedos, por ejemplo, su escritura resulta ser ‘Palíndroma’, un tipo de escrito que se puede leer tanto al derecho como al revés, como los visitantes solo pueden comunicarse con símbolos que ellos mismos generan con algún tipo de sustancia que ellos emiten, la doctora en lingüística utilizará sus conocimientos para entenderla y crear un glosario de significado de palabras.
A medida que las cosas se van proyectando, Lousie se da cuenta paulatinamente que puede leer el idioma de los Heptápedos y que todo tiene que ver con un arma que ellos quieren ofrecer a la humanidad. Este concepto es diferente, puesto que el término ‘arma’ es usado por los alienígenas para referirse a una ‘herramienta’ o ‘regalo’, el cual es usado para poder ver el futuro.
Louise realizes that her interaction with the Heptapeds is affecting her perception of things, and that her sudden visions are images of her future as a result of having deciphered the Visitors' language. Using her new ability, Louise attempts to stop a world war by calling directly to the General of China, to stop the attack on the Visitors' ships, a masterful plot twist.
Within the film we also see a linguistic reference that was the one that marked the outcome of the story, it is the hypothesis of Sapir-Whorf, which tells us that all human beings, through language, have a particular conception of the world. A particular cosmogony that cannot be changed abruptly, for example, a Chinese person does not see the world in the same way as a Latin American or vice versa, since they come from two very different cultures and language is the greatest influence of all. By learning another language and culture, our brain is completely restructured to give way to new knowledge and see at the same time a new conception of the world.
In the film, this hypothesis has a lot of weight, since the protagonist, upon learning the language of the visitors, begins to acquire the ability to see the future just like them, that is, her whole organism has been restructured. That is the weapon or tool that the Heptapedos wanted to leave to humanity, their language, the best gift they have been able to give them.
This is a beautiful story that talks about language as the only link that connects us all, whether we are from different cultures or have different conceptions, language unites people and helps us to understand each other's situations. I liked the moral of the story, apart from how it is encompassed and the excellent photographic frames that show us a paranormal environment. The special effects were also another thing that impressed me, really the editing is well done and I don't have to say anything else.
Amy Adams' performance was also sublime, her character conveyed to me a duality of boldness and fragility, taking things slowly so that the story doesn't feel rushed. The language they use in the film is not purely scientific, as it makes inroads to the viewer with simple terms what is intended to be realized within the plot. The truth is that the story has kept me hooked from beginning to end, and it is a movie I would watch more than once. I give it a rating of 9/10 placing it on my list of best sci-fi movies I have seen.
Louise se da cuenta que su interacción con los Heptápedos está afectando sus percepción de las cosas, y que sus repentinas visiones son imágenes de su futuro consecuencia de haber descifrado el lenguaje de los visitantes. Usando su nueva habilidad, Louise intenta detener una guerra mundial llamando directamente al General de China, para detener el ataque contra las naves de los visitantes, un giro magistral por parte de la trama.
Dentro de la película también vemos una referencia lingüística que fue la que marcó el desenlace de la historia, se trata de la hipótesis de Sapir-Whorf, la cual nos habla de que todos los seres humanos, a través del lenguaje, poseemos una concepción determinada del mundo. Una cosmogonía particular que no puede cambiarse de manera abrupta, por ejemplo, un chino no ve el mundo de la misma manera que un latinoamericano o viceversa, puesto que vienen de dos culturas muy diferentes y el lenguaje es la mayor influencia de todas. Al aprender otro idioma y cultura, nuestro cerebro se reestructura completamente para darle paso a nuevos conocimientos y ver al mismo tiempo una nueva concepción del mundo.
En la película, esta hipótesis tiene mucho peso, ya que la protagonista, al aprender el idioma de los visitantes, comienza a adquirir la habilidad de ver el futuro al igual que ellos, es decir, todo su organismo se ha reestructurado. Ese es el arma o herramienta que los Heptápedos querían dejarle a la humanidad, su lenguaje, el mejor regalo que han podido darles.
Esta es una hermosa historia que habla sobre el lenguaje como único nexo que nos conecta a todos, seamos de diferentes culturas o tengamos concepciones diferentes, el idioma une a las personas y nos ayuda a comprender las situaciones de los demás. Me gustó la moraleja de la historia, aparte de como está abarcada y los excelentes marcos fotográficos que nos enseñan un ambiente paranormal. Los efectos especiales también fueron otra de las cosas que me impresionaron, de verdad que el montaje está bien hecho y no tengo que decir nada más.
La interpretación de Amy Adams también fue sublime, su personaje me transmitía una dualidad de osadía y fragilidad, llevando las cosas despacio para que la historia no se sienta acelerada. El lenguaje que usan en la película no es netamente científico, pues incursiona al espectador con términos simples lo que se pretende realizar dentro de la trama. La verdad es que la historia me ha mantenido enganchado de principio a fin, y es una película que vería más de una vez. Le doy un calificación de 9/10 colocándola en mi lista de mejores películas de ciencia ficción que he visto.
