A suspense that envelops us in beautiful images of a gothic fantasy, built with scenarios that take us into a world both beautiful and dark, that is where we find the exquisite essence of 'Crimson Peak', another artistic work of the well-known Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro.

Un suspenso que nos envuelve en hermosas imágenes de una fantasía gótica, construida con escenarios que nos adentran a un mundo tanto hermoso como oscuro, es ahí donde encontramos la exquisita esencia de ‘Crimson Peak’, otra obra artística del conocido director mexicano Guillermo del Toro.
We know this director's brand very well, as the beautiful paintings he presents us with in different cinematic shots seem to be taken from an extraordinary parallel world. The film was released in 2015 and starred Mia Wasikowska as Edith Cushing, Tom Hiddleston as Sir Thomas Sharpe, Jessica Chastain as Lady Lucille Sharpe and Charlie Hunnam as Dr. Alan McMichael. The film was produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Universal Pictures.
The film is a romantic drama, full of suspense and a strange, sick romance that will only be revealed at the very end, elements that are very well inserted into the plot. The settings are worthy of a gothic novel by Ann Ridcliffe, one of the most emblematic figures of this genre. One thing I do highlight about the film, is that the plot seems to be diminished by the beautiful gothic environments it presents us with. A terrifying story with a predictable ending, but that doesn't make it an underrated feature, since the rich atmosphere leads us to an atmosphere of curiosity, inhabited by ghosts from Del Toro's universe.
Conocemos muy bien la marca de este director, ya que los hermosos cuadros que nos presenta en diferentes tomas cinematográficas parecen sacadas de un mundo paralelo extraordinario. La película fue estrenada en 2015 y ha sido protagonizada por Mia Wasikowska como Edith Cushing, Tom Hiddleston como sir Thomas Sharpe, Jessica Chastain como lady Lucille Sharpe y Charlie Hunnam como el Dr. Alan McMichael. La película fue producida por Legendary Pictures y distribuida por la Universal Pictures.
Dentro del largometraje encontraremos un drama romántico, lleno de suspenso y un extraño romance enfermizo que solo se nos será revelado casi al final, elementos muy bien insertados dentro de la trama. Los escenarios son dignos de una novela gótica de Ann Ridcliffe, una de las figuras más emblemáticas de este género. Una cosa que si resalto de la película, es que la trama parece ser disminuida por los hermosos ambientes góticos que nos presenta. Una historia terrorífica con un final predecible, pero eso no la hace un largometraje menospreciado, puesto que la rica atmosfera nos lleva a un ambiente de curiosidad, habitado por fantasmas provenientes del universo de Del Toro.
The cinematography was done by Dan Laustsen, who has worked again with Del Toro in "The Shape of Water " (2017), revealing the beautiful environments for the delight of our eyes, focusing on the artistic part of the scenery. The music was composed by Fernando Velázquez, who has also been musical interpreter of the beautiful fantasy film "A Monster Calls " (2016), which I may review someday. The costumes are another element that stands out, and thanks to the work of Kate Hawley we can appreciate the colorful costumes that contrast with the gloomy environments of many scenes, not for nothing that thanks to this Kate has been nominated for best costumes twice thanks to her performance in this film.
La fotografía fue realizada por Dan Laustsen, quien vuelve ha trabajar con Del Toro en “The Shape of Water” (2017), revelándonos los hermosos ambientes para el deleite de nuestros ojos, enfocándose en la parte artística de los escenarios. La música fue compuesta por Fernando Velázquez, quien también ha sido interprete musical de la hermosa película de fantasía “A Monster Calls” (2016), la cual tal vez haga una reseña algún día. El vestuario es otro elemento que sobresalta, y gracias al trabajo de Kate Hawley podemos apreciar los coloridos trajes que contrastan con los ambientes lúgubres de muchas escenas, no por nada que gracias a esto Kate haya sido nominada por mejor vestuario en dos ocasiones gracias a su desempeño en esta película.

The plot is the usual one we can find within the classic gothic novel. A wealthy young woman named Edith Cushing with the dream of becoming a writer meets an Englishman named Thomas Sharpe with whom she falls in love, but the death of her father Carter Cushing played by Jim Beaver changes the plans of her life, and she accepts the marriage proposal of the English nobleman. His sister, a stern and somewhat distant woman, seems to disagree with their union, but the unimpeded couple embarks on a trip to the Sharpe manor house in Cumberland, England, where the extraordinary things happen throughout the film. There we have a house in the style of "The Fall of the House of Usher " by the American writer Edgard A. Poe, a dilapidated house sinking from its foundations, plagued by a cold atmosphere that enters through the countless openings of the place. In this place, our heroine is the victim of terrifying ghostly apparitions that remind her of a past warning not to go to Crimson Peak.
La trama es la usual que podemos encontrar dentro de la novela gótica clásica. Una joven adinerada llamada Edith Cushing con el sueño de convertirse en escritora conoce a un hombre inglés llamado Thomas Sharpe del cual se enamora, pero la muerte de su padre Carter Cushing interpretado por Jim Beaver cambia los planes de su vida, y acepta la propuesta de matrimonio del noble inglés. Su hermana, una mujer severa y algo distante, parece no estar de acuerdo con la unión de ambos, pero la pareja sin impedimentos emprende un viaje a la casona de los Sharpe en Cumberland, Inglaterra, donde suceden las cosas extraordinarias de toda la película. Allí tenemos una casa al estilo de ”The Fall of the House of Usher” del escritor estadounidense Edgard A. Poe, una casa ruinosa que se hunde desde su cimientos, azotada por un ambiente frío que entra por las aberturas incontables del lugar. En dicho lugar, nuestra heroína es víctima de terroríficas apariciones fantasmales que le hacen recordar a un pasado de advertencia de no ir hacia ‘Crimson Peak’.

The mystery that turns into horror, a secret that will devastate the protagonist as she realizes the vortex of doom into which she has fallen. As the story continues, the main character goes through a sort of reverse Crescendo in which we see her, at first, as a strong, determined woman, with a dream to achieve which is to become a great writer, wanting her first ghost novel to achieve success, but then we see our heroine become fragile, like a damsel in distress, as she is overwhelmed by that evil that is at her side. In the end, we will see a brave protagonist, resurrected from the demons that wanted to destroy her.
The film's screenplay was written by the director himself with the help of Matthew Robbins, who has excelled as a screenwriter in several science fiction, horror and fantasy films, creating on this occasion a gothic tale with an ending, which in my opinion was predictable, although adding surreal details that went well with the toxic Anglo-Saxon environment. However, it is quite predictable and usual the part of the villain falling in love with the heroine, this is not an advance is quite deductible, but I thought it was a nice detail as it makes us realize who the real villain is. In this aspect the film does not lose its romantic touch that is also characteristic in the gothic novel, but in the terrifying, it leaves a lot halfway.
El misterio que se torna en horror, un secreto que devastará a la protagonista al darse cuenta en el vórtice de perdición en el que ha caído. A medida que va continuando la historia, el personaje principal va pasando por una especie de Crescendo a la inversa en el que la vemos, en primer lugar, como una mujer fuerte, decidida, con un sueño que alcanzar que es el de convertirse en una gran escritora, queriendo que su primera novela sobre fantasmas alcance el éxito, pero luego vemos que nuestra heroína se vuelve frágil, como una damisela en peligro, al ser abrumada por aquel mal que está a su lado. Al final, veremos a una protagonista valiente, resurgida de los demonios que querían destruirla.
El guión de la película fue realizado por el propio director con la ayuda de Matthew Robbins, quien se ha destacado como guionista en varias películas de ciencia ficción, terror y fantasía, creando en esta ocasión un cuento gótico con un final, que a mi parecer fue predecible, aunque agregándole detalles surrealistas que compaginaron bien con el tóxico ambiente anglosajón. Sin embargo, es bastante predecible y usual la parte de que el villano se enamore de la heroína, esto no es un adelanto es bastante deducible, pero me pareció un bonito detalle ya que nos hace darnos cuenta de quién es el verdadero villano. En este aspecto la película no pierde su toque romántico que también es característico en la novela gótica, pero en lo terrorífico, deja mucho a medias.
The presence of ghosts is sporadic, but I can't deny that the paranormal makeup of Xavier Bastida has been for me something spectacular, to tell the truth I expect from a Del Toro's film and everything coming from his wide imagination. I consider that as fantastic art the film is a masterpiece, its plot is disturbing, but it lacks some strength, maybe other people perceive it differently and say I'm wrong, but it's just my opinion. I give the film a rating of 8/10, it is very good to spend the night lying in bed, there is a lot to expect from this film, and if you like fantastic stories with gothic atmospheres of Anglo-Saxon style, you will love this one.
La presencia de los fantasmas es esporádica, pero no puedo negar que el maquillaje paranormal de Xavier Bastida ha sido para mí algo espectacular, a decir verdad lo espero de una película de Del Toro y todo lo proveniente a su amplia imaginación. Considero, que como arte fantástico el filme es una obra maestra, su trama es perturbadora, pero le hace falta algo de fuerza, quizás otras personas lo perciban diferente y digan que estoy equivocado, pero es solo mi opinión. Le doy a la película una calificación de 8/10, es muy buena para pasar la noche acostados en cama, hay mucho que esperar de este filme, y si gustan de las historias fantásticas con ambientes góticos de estilo anglosajón, este les va a encantar.
