There are people who often wonder if the intangible can also die at its most fortuitous peak. In our philosophical moments, we begin to feel a strong relapse, a strange sensation that everything we are going to experience will end up sinking us into depression, however, we are visited by a corpuscle of hope that grows and makes us see that we can be worthy of successful things, I believe that this is one of the messages that 'Requiem for a dream', the film from the beginning of this century, wants to instill in us, the film that, when you see it, you will be shocked, or at least it caused me that sensation, since the images are so hard that they are not for delicate minds.
There are many reviews and detailed analysis about this film, it has been seen from many aspects and it is not for less, it was listed as one of the most analyzed films from many scientific and philosophical aspects. I for my part will make my review from my point of view, emphasizing the aspects that stand out from the film and why it is so worthwhile.
The story is about four main characters: Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly) and Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans). From the characters' perspectives, we can see that the story is an ascent into chaos, ultimately ending in abysmal calm. The film is divided into three seasons: summer, autumn and winter.

Hay personas que muchas veces se preguntan si lo intangible también puede morir en su apogeo más fortuito. En nuestros momentos filosóficos, comenzamos a sentir una fuerte recaída, una extraña sensación de que todo lo que vamos a experimentar terminará por hundirnos a la depresión, sin embargo, nos visita un corpúsculo de esperanza que se agiganta y nos hace ver que podemos ser merecedores de cosas exitosas, creo que ese es uno de los mensajes que quiere inculcarnos ’Requiem for a dream’, la película de principios de este siglo que, al verla, quedarás impactado, o por lo menos a mí me causó en esa sensación, puesto que las imágenes son tan duras que no son actas para mentes delicadas.
Existen muchas reseñas y análisis minuciosos sobre esta película, ha sido vista de muchos aspectos y no es para menos, fue catalogada como una de las películas más analizadas desde muchos aspectos tanto científicos como filosóficos. Yo por mi parte haré mi reseña desde mi punto de vista, haciendo un énfasis de los aspectos que resaltan de la película y porque vale tanto la pena.
La historia trata sobre cuatro personajes principales: Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly) y Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans). Desde la perspectiva de los personajes, podremos divisar que la historia es una ascensión al caos, terminando finalmente a una calma abismal. El largometraje se divide en tres estaciones: Verano, otoño e invierno.
Sara Goldfarb
We begin with Sara Goldfarb, perhaps because she is the character with a particularity distinct from the others. She is a widow who lives alone in her apartment in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, she is the mother of Harry and her only company are her neighbors. Her only hobbies are talking to her friends and watching her favorite TV quiz show, which Sara has dreams of being famous for. She wants to be like the TV stars; slim, elegant, famous, acclaimed by everyone and become an important and successful person.
Sara is lonely in her apartment, her only son hardly visits her and she thinks that the only thing that would give her life meaning is to be an important person, adored by millions of people. One day, she receives a call from her favorite TV show inviting her to be a contestant there, Sara, full of excitement, starts a diet to be thinner and wear the beautiful red dress she wore to her son Harry's high school graduation. Her friends tell her about a clandestine doctor who offers a treatment of pills to lose weight, Sara does not think twice and goes to that doctor and begins to ingest the pills of dubious origin, later we realize that they are amphetamines for which Sara creates a strong dependence, from there, things start to become murky.
Sara Goldfarb
Comenzamos con Sara Goldfarb, quizás porque es el personaje con una particularidad distinta a los demás. Es una viuda que vive sola en su apartamento en Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, es la madre de Harry y su única compañía son sus vecinas. Su único pasatiempo es hablar con sus amigas y ver su programa de televisión favorito de concursos, con el cual Sara tiene sueños de ser famosa. Quiere ser como las estrellas de la TV; delgada, elegante, célebre, aclamada por todos y convertirse en una persona importante y exitosa.
Sara se siente sola en su apartamento, su único hijo casi no la visita y piensa que lo único que le daría sentido a su vida es ser una persona importante, adorada por millones de personas. Un día, recibe una llamada de su programa de televisión predilecto invitándola a concursar allí, Sara, llena de emoción, comienza una dieta para estar más delgada y usar el hermoso vestido rojo que usó en la graduación de secundaria de su hijo Harry. Sus amigas le comentan sobre un médico clandestino que ofrece un tratamiento de pastillas para adelgazar, Sara no lo piensa dos veces y va con aquel médico y comienza a ingerir las pastillas de dudosa procedencia, posteriormente nos damos cuenta que son anfetaminas por las que Sara crea una fuerte dependencia, a partir de ahí, las cosas comienza a volverse turbias.

Harry, Marion and Tyrone
Then we have these three characters that I decided to place them on the same plane since they share the same milestone: Willful dependence to drugs, not like Sara who fell into amphetamines because of her desire to be thin and because of the prescription of a doctor of dubious reputation. Harry, is an addict, in fact we can see at the beginning of the movie that he pawns his mother's TV set to get more dope. Marion, is Harry's girlfriend, a girl with a great talent in fashion design. She likes danger, adrenaline, something we can see in several scenes where, together with her boyfriend, they set off the alarm of a building running away from the security guard. Marion is also an addict, and her love for Harry is doubtful, since we don't know if it's because she gives him drugs to satisfy herself or if she really has feelings for him. Harry, on the other hand, does have feelings for Marion and only wants to make her happy.
Tyrone, Harry's best friend, is also a drug addict like him. One day, Tyrone proposes to his friend to sell drugs, since he knows a contact who would provide him with the merchandise. Harry accepts and together they become dealers. Harry, out of a desire to help Marion set up her own clothing store, begins to make a lot of money and the three of them fall into a vicious cycle they can't get out of.
Things start to go wrong for them when the supplier who provided the drugs is murdered in front of Tyrone' s eyes, desperate, both friends start looking for drugs in another city to sell, while things around them turn into a vortex of destruction.
Marion begins to fall into a withdrawal syndrome from not having drugs and begins to bring out his true nature, for which he has a fierce argument with Harry. One day, Marion meets a guy named Big Tim (Keith David), who he sleeps with to get dope, then he tells him about a party where he could get more, where he will have to prostitute himself by having sex with women to satiate his addiction.
Harry, Marion y Tyrone
Luego tenemos a estos tres personajes que decidí colocarlos en un mismo plano ya que comparten un mismo hito: La dependencia voluntaria a las drogas, no como Sara que cayó en las anfetas por su deseo de ser delgada y por la prescripción de un médico de reputación dudosa. Harry, es un adicto, de hecho podemos ver al principio de la película que empeña el televisor de su madre para conseguir más droga. Marion, es la novia de Harry, una chica con un gran talento en el diseño de modas. Le gusta el peligro, la adrenalina, cosa que podemos ver en varias escenas donde, junto con su novio, activan la alarma de un edificio huyendo del guardia de seguridad. Marion también es adicta, y su amor por Harry es dudoso, ya que no sabemos si es porque le otorga droga para satisfacerse o de verdad tiene sentimientos por él. Harry, en cambio, si siente cosas por Marion y solo quiere hacerla feliz.
Tyrone, es el mejor amigo de Harry, también drogadicto como él. Un día, Tyrone le propone a su amigo vender droga, ya que conoce a un contacto que le proveería la mercancía. Harry acepta y juntos se convierten en vendedores. Harry, por el deseo de ayudar a Marion a levantar su propio almacén de ropa, comienzan a hacer bastante dinero y los tres caen en un círculo vicioso en el que no podrán salir.
Las cosas comienza a salirles mal cuando el proveedor que les confería la droga es asesinado frente a los ojos de Tyrone, desesperados, ambos amigos comienzan a buscar droga en otra ciudad para vender, mientras que las cosas a su alrededor se convierten en un vórtice dirigente a la destrucción.
Marion comienza a caer en un síndrome de abstinencia por no tener droga y empieza a sacar su verdadera naturaleza, por lo que tiene una fuerte discusión con Harry. Un día, Marion conoce a un tipo llamado Big Tim (Keith David), con él que se acuesta para conseguir droga, luego este le habla sobre una fiesta donde podría conseguir más, donde tendrá que prostituirse teniendo sexo con mujeres para saciar su adicción.

The point of affliction
The truth is not known exactly what type of drug these three characters consume, but it is presumed to be heroin, because of the intravenous injections Harry was giving himself during the movie, which caused a terrible infection in his arm. As Tyrone and Harry head off to get more of the drug, Harry's arm gets worse and begins to turn gangrenous, so his friend rushes him to a hospital. There, they realize they are addicts and drug carriers, so Tyrone is arrested and Harry has his arm amputated as he is beyond saving. Tyrone, ends up in prison working for a racist cop who treats him badly, Harry is left without an arm and during those same moments, Marion was having sex acts with women while a group of men around him were yelling at them and throwing money at them.
El punto de aflicción
La verdad no se sabe con exactitud el tipo de droga que estos tres personajes consumen, pero se presume que sea heroína, por las inyecciones intravenosas que Harry se aplicaba durante la película, las cuales provocaron una terrible infección en su brazo. Mientras Tyrone y Harry se dirigían para conseguir más droga, el brazo de Harry empeora y comienza a tornarse gangrenoso, por lo que su amigo lo lleva rápidamente a un hospital. Allí, se dan cuenta que son adictos y que son portadores de drogas, por lo que Tyrone es arrestado y a Harry le amputan el brazo ya que no tiene salvación. Tyrone, termina en prisión trabajando para un policía racista que lo trata mal, Harry se queda sin un brazo y durante esos mismos momentos, Marion se encontraba teniendo actos sexuales con mujeres mientras que un grupo de hombres a su alrededor les gritaban y les lanzaban dinero.

On the other hand, Sara's situation was not getting any better. At the same time that the other three characters were going down the road to destruction, Sara, was starting to have hallucinations because of the amphetamines. At this point, the film plays with our sense of reality, as we don't know if Sara is really hallucinating or imagining. Sara begins to see the fridge talking to her, she watches as delicious burgers and cakes suddenly appear around her. As she is watching her favorite TV show with a new TV that Harry had given her, she watches in anguish as the show itself mocks her situation.
Por otra parte, La situación de Sara no iba mejor. Al mismo tiempo que los otros tres personajes iban por el camino a la destrucción, Sara, comenzaba a tener alucinaciones a causa de las anfetaminas. En este punto, la película juega con nuestro sentido de la realidad, ya que no sabemos si de verdad Sara está alucinando o está imaginando. Sara comienza a ver que la nevera le habla, observa como aparecen de repente deliciosas hamburguesas y pasteles a su alrededor. Mientras está viendo su programa de televisión favorito con una TV nueva que le había regalado Harry, ve con angustia como el propio show se burla de su situación.

During these tortuous moments, Sara falls into dementia and paranoia and runs out of her house to the place where her favorite program is broadcast to ask why she has not been called. There, the receptionist is concerned about her situation and decides to call a psychiatric hospital where Sara is admitted.
From that moment on, Sara is forced by the doctors to receive a terrible Electroshock therapy, which leaves her more dazed with her brain calcined, detaching her completely from reality. In the last scenes, after the characters went through a variability of situations, each of them is bedridden in a fetal position, this is a manifestation of fragility.
Durante esos tortuosos momentos, Sara cae en la demencia y la paranoia y sale corriendo de su casa hacia el lugar donde transmiten su programa favorito para preguntar porque no la han llamado. En dicho sitio, la recepcionista ve con preocupación su situación y decide llamar a un hospital psiquiátrico donde Sara es internada.
A partir de ese momento, Sara es forzada por los médicos a recibir una terrible terapia de Electroshocks, que la dejan más aturdida con el cerebro calcinado, desprendiéndola por completo de la realidad. En las últimas escenas, después de que los personajes pasaron por una variabilidad de situaciones, cada uno de ellos se encuentra postrado en una cama en posición fetal, esto es una manifestación de fragilidad.
Why Requiem for a dream?
The name of the film is quite suggestive according to the situation of the characters and the background it wants to expose. A Requiem, according to popular Christian tradition, is a funeral dirge for the deceased. In this case, as we can see in the film, it speaks of dead dreams and hopes. The four main characters had particular dreams they wanted to achieve. Sara dreamed of being famous, slim and adored by millions of people, she also dreamed of her son Harry being a successful businessman with a good marriage. Harry and Marion, dreamed of opening their own business, Marion's clothing store. Tyrone, also dreamed of being a successful businessman, someone in life.
As we can see, the dreams of the characters were not bad, on the contrary, they just wanted to be famous, successful, to have their own business to contribute to society, thus wishing good and happiness for their loved ones, but in the pursuit of their goals, the mechanisms were not favorable to them, where in the end they ended up in a deranged abyss where they could not get out.
¿Por qué Requiem for a dream?
El nombre del filme es bastante sugerente de acuerdo a la situación de los personajes y el trasfondo que quiere exponer. Un Réquiem, según la tradición popular cristiana, es un canto fúnebre para los difuntos. En este caso, como podremos apreciar dentro de la película, nos habla de los sueños y esperanzas muertas. Los cuatro personajes principales tenían sueños particulares que querían alcanzar. Sara soñaba con ser famosa, delgada y adorada por millones de personas, soñaba también con que su hijo Harry fuese un exitoso hombre de negocios con un buen matrimonio. Harry y Marion, soñaban con abrir su propio negocio, el almacén de ropa de Marion. Tyrone, también soñaba con ser un exitoso hombre de negocios, alguien en la vida.
Como podemos ver, los sueños de los personajes no eran malos, al contrario, solo querían ser famosos, exitosos, tener sus propios negocios para aportar a la sociedad, deseando así el bien y la felicidad para sus seres queridos, pero en la búsqueda de sus metas, los mecanismos no fueron favorables para ellos, donde al final terminaron en un abismo trastornado donde no pudieron salir.

About the director
The director of this film is Darren Aronofsky, based on the homonymous novel by Hubert Selby Jr: Requiem for a dream (1978), who helped him to write the screenplay for the feature film. If we investigate Aronofsky's film career, we can see that his films have that surreal and melancholic characteristic, with disturbed images and situations that give a feeling of disturbance. These aspects can be observed in his other works such as: The Fountain of Life (2006) and The Black Swan (2010), if you have seen either of these two films, you will realize what this director's psychotic style is like.

El director de esta película es Darren Aronofsky, basándose en la novela homónima de Hubert Selby Jr: Requiem for a dream (1978), quien le ayudó a elaborar el guión para el largometraje. Si nos adentramos a investigar la trayectoria cinematográfica de Aronofsky, podemos darnos cuenta que sus película tienen esa característica surrealista y melancólica, con imágenes y situaciones trastornadas que dan esa sensación de perturbación. Estos aspectos podemos observarlos en sus otros trabajos como: La fuente de la vida (2006) y El cisne negro (2010), si has visto alguna de estas dos películas, te darás cuenta de cómo es el estilo psicótico de este director.
Requiem for a Dream, is a film that makes us get inside the head of a drug addict, it is full of confusion where we do not know what is real and what is not, the shots are well done as if we were under the effects of drugs. It knows how to play with our mind and with our feelings leaving us in absolute uneasiness. It has been chosen as one of the best films of the decade between 2000 and 2010, giving it an Oscar nomination for Best Actress to Ellen Burstyn, who plays Sara Goldfarb. My personal rating is 9/10 and if you are one of those who enjoy these psychedelic and melodramatic films, I know you will like this one.
Requiem for a Dream, es una película que nos hace meternos dentro de la cabeza de un drogadicto, está llena de confusión donde no sabemos lo que es real y lo que no, los planos están bien hechos como si estuviéramos bajo los efectos de las drogas. Sabe jugar con nuestra mente y con nuestros sentimientos dejándonos en absoluto desasosiego. Ha sido elegida como una de las mejores películas de la década entre los años 2000 y 2010, otorgándole una nominación al Óscar como mejor actriz a Ellen Burstyn, quien interpreta a Sara Goldfarb. Mi calificación personal es de 9/10 y si eres de esos que disfrutan de estos filmes psicodélicos y melodramáticos, sé que esta te va a gustar.
