Good morning, afternoon or evening. We continue with horror movies, this time we will talk about a film that covers one of the many that this iconic saga has. I'm talking about nothing more and nothing less than Saw, to be honest I had never seen a single film about it before, it never caught my attention until I decided to give it a chance. Currently I've only seen 3, I know they're releasing another one this year, so I want to catch up. It seems crazy to me that they made one production a year until about 2010, plus they use little budget and make insane profits. I particularly want to talk about Saw 2 specifically, because so far I think it's the best I've seen, with 3 being the worst of them all, maybe I'll review it later in the week. So without further ado, let's get started.
Buenos días, tardes o noches. Seguimos con las películas de terror, esta vez hablaremos de una película que abarca una de las tantas que esta icónica saga tiene. Estoy hablando nada más ni nada menos que de Saw, para serles sincero nunca antes me había visto ni un solo filme sobre esto, nunca me llamó la atención hasta que decidí darle una oportunidad. En la actualidad sólo me he visto 3, sé que este año sacan otra más, así que quiero ponerme al día. Me parece una locura que hayan hecho una producción al año hasta aproximadamente el 2010, además de que usen poco prepuesto y obtengan ganancias demenciales. En particular quiero hablar sobre Saw 2 en específico, porque hasta ahora me parece la mejor que me he visto, siendo la 3, la peor de todas, quizás más adelante le haga una reseña, en el transcurso de la semana. Así que sin más dilación, comencemos.
The story puts us in the shoes of Daniel Matthews and his policeman dad Eric Matthews, who will have to face Jigsaw's macabre games each in their own way. We start with Daniel, who will be put to the test in the classic 'live or die, you decide', along with other people, finding himself waking up in an unknown house, where there is a deadly gas in the air and they must get the antidotes before the established time to get out of that location. Eric, on the other hand, will be put to the test by Jigsaw, his main mission being to save his son, where he only has to do one thing according to John Kramer himself, wait until the time for his son's test runs out, only then will he find him safe. Will father and son manage to survive the macabre game?
La historia nos pone en la piel de Daniel Matthews y su papá policía Eric Matthews, quienes se deberán enfrentar a los juegos macabros de Jigsaw cada uno a su manera. Comenzaremos con Daniel, que será puesto a prueba en el clásico 'vivir o morir, tú decides', junto otras personas, encontrándose al despertar en una casa desconocida, donde hay un gas mortal en el ambiente y deben conseguir los antídotos antes del tiempo establecido para lograr salir de esa localidad. Eric, en cambio, será puesto a prueba por Jigsaw siendo su misión principal salvar a su hijo, donde solo tiene que hacer una cosa según el mismísimo John Kramer, quedarse esperando hasta que se acabe el tiempo de la prueba de su hijo, que sólo así lo encontrará a salvo. ¿Lograrán padre e hijo sobrevivir al macabro juego?
This work itself has an interesting proposal, it totally raises the level of the first one, adding many more characters, each one with their own clear personalities and with a background that we will discover based on the tapes that Jigsaw leaves behind, depending on what evidence is found in the house. The tension is established in a good way for the viewer, you will have to keep an eye on everything that happens, you will feel the need to know what is happening, you need a clear explanation about everything; the use of flashbacks to explain, narrating little by little the development of the plot is sublime, something that we had already seen previously in Saw 1. As you watch, you'll see the tension escalate until it reaches a point of maximum tension where everything explodes, a formula that culminates at the end of the film to leave a plot twist that may blow your mind if you didn't pay attention to all the clues that were left for you. This is a characteristic pattern and formula in the saga, where it continues to work here. I want to mention the fact that it is easy to empathise with Daniel and Eric Matthews, making them memorable protagonists.
Esta obra en sí tiene una interesante propuesta, sube totalmente el nivel que tenía la 1, añadiendo muchos más personajes, cada uno con sus personalidades claras y con un trasfondo que iremos descubriendo en base a las cintas que va dejando Jigsaw, según qué prueba se encuentren en la casa. Se establece de buena manera una tensión al espectador, tendrás que mantenerte atento a todo lo que ocurre, sentirás la necesidad de saber qué está pasando, necesitas una clara explicación sobre todo; el uso de los flashbacks para explicar, ir narrando poco a poco el desarrollo de la trama es sublime, cosa que ya habíamos visto anteriormente en Saw 1. Conforme vayas viendo, verás que la tensión escala hasta llegar a un punto de tensión máxima donde todo explota, fórmula que culmina al terminar la película para dejar un plot twist que puede que te vuele la cabeza si no prestaste atención a todas las pistas que se te fueron dejando. Este es un patrón y fórmula característica en la saga, donde acá sigue funcionando. Quiero mencionar el hecho que es fácil empatizar con Daniel y Eric Matthews, haciéndolos protagonistas memorables.
The special effects, which 15 years later still look pretty good, the amount of deaths, tests and convoluted traps with complex solutions, are far superior to those found in the first film. Here we can find an ecstasy of gore, blood galore and people dying everywhere, tortures that only the craziest sadist could come up with. The cinematography is pretty basic, this is not a high calibre product where millions of dollars are spent to deliver a product of immense quality, the producers and directors of this saga are easily known for using a small budget to make too much profit, making Saw a profitable product. The soundtrack is a little remarkable, among all of them only the main theme of the saga stands out, and you won't be able to enjoy it too much, it only comes out at the end.
Apartado a resaltar muchísimo son los efectos especiales que 15 años después siguen viéndose bastante bien, la cantidad de muertes, pruebas y trampas enrevesadas con soluciones a la mar de complejas, son ampliamente superiores a las que encontramos en la primera película. Acá podremos encontrar un éxtasis de gore, sangre a montones y gente muriendo en todos lados, torturas que sólo se le ocurrirían al más loco sádico. La cinematografía es bastante básica, no estamos ante un producto de alto calibre donde se gastan millones de dólares para otorgar un producto de inmensa calidad, los productores y directores de esta saga son conocidos fácilmente por usar un prepuesto reducido sacándole demasiada ganancia, haciendo de Saw un producto rentable. Apartado poco destacable es la banda sonora, entre todas solo sobresale el tema principal de la saga, y no lo podrás disfrutar en demasía, solo sale al final.
In conclusion, Saw 2 is a film that easily improves on what its predecessor does, making use of a repertoire of blood and gore with decent special effects that even after several years look good, its plot and characters are quite well developed and you can easily empathise with them, you will want them to escape and win the macabre game. The plot twist at the end is quite well employed and might surprise you if you are not very attentive to the things happening on screen. It is a recommendable work to pass the time if you have nothing to watch.
En conclusión, Saw 2 es una película que mejora fácilmente lo que hace su predecesora, haciendo uso de un repertorio de sangre y muertes con efectos especiales bastantes decentes que aún después de varios años lucen bien, su trama y personajes están bastante bien desarrollados y fácilmente puedes sentirte empatizado con ellos, querrás que consigan escapar y ganar el juego macabro. El plot twist que se emplea al final del todo, está bastante bien empleado y puede que te llegue a sorprender si no estás muy atento a las cosas que ocurren en pantalla. Es una obra recomendable para pasar el rato si no tienes nada que ver.
