Hello, dear cinephile friends of this community. I've been missing for quite a while for many reasons, but I've been willing to come back, and here I am, hoping it won't be too long before this happens again. Today I bring you a recommendation of a docuseries to watch on Netflix.
By now you all know very well how much of a cinephile I am, and how much I love watching series and movies. But if there's one thing that leaves me settled in front of a screen for hours, it's watching documentaries, I'm a sick documentary fanatic. Previously, in another network, I used to review documentaries that dealt with environmental issues, but due to life, I stopped doing it. But now, with this return, I have decided to share with you all the documentaries that I am passionate about, and this happens for a specific reason: they are based on real cases, from things that are under public opinion and those that are not.
Today I must say, with much respect, the documentary that I am going to show is very delicate, it deals with subjects that in my opinion are repudiable and that I can't conceive how there are people capable of doing this. I will not apologize for my position as a woman and how I think about these cases, I defend and will always defend in my guild, and although I will be talking about a couple of highly sexist positions, I am not generalizing or putting all men in the same package.
With this disclaimer I am ready to introduce you: Keep Sweet: Prayers and Obey.
KEEP SWEET: PRAY AND OBEY
For me, it is not easy to talk about something that has to do with the religious theme, and perhaps many do not want to see this precisely because I know it is very controversial, but there are times that no matter what, everything overcomes the controversy and we go to the same side, and this is one of these cases. When we get into this documentary series directed by Rachel Dretzin and Grace McNally, you realize that although it talks about a religious sect, they only use God and the teachings as an excuse to commit the most heinous crimes in their name and this gives it a point of disgust of the most unpleasant.
To put them in context, the story focuses on the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (IFDS), which is a Mormon fundamentalist organization. You could say, just so you understand the context, they are extremists. When they split from the Mormon Church, they choose a single leader, Rulon Jeff, whom they recognize as The Prophet. They are known worldwide for being polygamous, each man of power could marry as many women as The Prophet agreed to. These women did not decide with whom they decided to marry, everything was at the request of The Prophet to the father of the woman in question.
At the time of Rulon's death, his son, Warren Jeff, begins to take over and proclaims himself The Prophet, in the year 2002. Here he begins to apply very strong changes, such as prohibiting access to information and the way the women of the congregation should act, dress, and comb their hair. And this is when things start to get dark because the "women" they start to access are 14-year-old girls.
I don't want to say more, because if this is starting to make you curious, you should wait until you finish the documentary. This one is narrated by real victims who were part of the cult, and even had a legal confrontation with Warren Jeffs, who was one of the FBI's 10 most wanted men at the time, along with Osama Bin Laden, that is, just to give you a little taste of who he is.
Before the premise "Keep Sweet" which is a rule imposed on the women and girls of the sect, we can already know what this is all about: you have no right to speak, to complain, to decide about yourself or your children, you must only look decent, dress as The Prophet says and act under the orders of your husband. This is what made the most noise to me because let's remember that these women were deprived of any kind of information, they did not know what existed beyond the village where they all lived. They had no radio or television, they could not use the telephone, and they knew nothing of what was happening outside. The only possible reference they had was to the beliefs they had grown up with, which had been instilled in them by men of power.
I must emphasize that no man should take away the rights of any woman, in most countries, everything that was done to these women is prohibited and punishable by law. It is a major cause of machismo and gender violence, to take away even the right to work and to decide what to do with your life is a clear offense to human rights, and every time I was watching I was filled with more anger for what they were doing to them. Listening to the testimonies of these women who managed to leave is heartbreaking.
No one should be stripped of their rights, no one. Much less when they are indoctrinated from the moment they are born that their only purpose in life is to be the property of a man and only to act on behalf of their ego. And acting in the name of God seems to be an even more disgusting act, a believing and creator-loving person was going to be whatever. Because we are not just talking about the indoctrination of women, men also fall into this from birth, they are molded and told what they should do, how they should act, and how they should treat their wives. And I'm not talking about the polygamy issue, because that's not really what this miniseries is about, it's about how they used young women to marry older men and how they stripped her of her rights. How Warren Jeffs moved everyone like puppets behind a "nice" facade. I see his face and it makes me want to punch him three times, he's the kind of man that makes me sick to my stomach, and I'm sure if you watch the documentary to the end, it will make you even sicker to your stomach.
I don't know if it will be to the liking of anyone who manages to read this far, because I know that not many people like documentaries, and many find them boring. But some things happen in the world, that have happened, and that we have the right to see. The original plan was to bring you two documentaries, but I got so stressed remembering this one that it was impossible to continue with another one that caused me as much indignation as this one.
There are more and more documentaries created by women exposing everything that has been done to them, and I think it is necessary to continue to expose these cases. Especially when they are men of power who go beyond all laws to get their way. I will continue to bring this type of issue because they are really necessary. And I must emphasize that I know that there are demonic women too, and that I will surely expose them because I am a true believer in equality, and that in this world there is everything and that we must expose everything so that they know what kind of people exist, and know how to act and what to teach our children.
Spirituality, religion, and love for God, are one of the most fundamental things in life, everyone has the right to access them, all children should grow up in a home where spirituality is part of it, this gives them values to grow as a human being, but also know that when they grow up they can decide to leave if they like and without being separated from everything they love because they do not agree with something.
I hope that with this review I have opened your curiosity a little and it will make you watch it, if not, I will continue because there are cases that I want to find out about and keep going to bed at 3 in the morning because I can't stop watching a single chapter.
Hola, queridos amigos cinéfilos de esta comunidad. Llevo un buen tiempo desaparecida por muchas razones, pero me he dispuesto a volver y aquí estoy, esperando que no pase mucho tiempo para que esto ocurra nuevamente. Hoy les traigo una recomendación de una docuserie para ver en Netflix.
Ya todos saben muy bien lo cinéfila que soy, y cuánto me gusta ver series y películas. Pero si hay algo que a mí me deje instalada frente a una pantalla por horas, es viendo documentales, soy fanática enferma de los documentales. Anteriormente, en otra cadena, hacía mis reseñas de documentales que abordaran el tema ambiental, pero por cosas de la vida, lo dejé de hacer. Pero ahora, con este regreso, he decidido compartir con ustedes todos los documentales que me apasionan, y esto sucede por una razón específica: son basados en casos reales. Desde cosas que están bajo la opinión pública como los que no.
Hoy debo decir, con mucho respeto, el documental que voy a mostrar es muy delicado, trata acerca de temas que en mi opinión son repudiables, y que no concibo cómo haya gente capaz de hacer esto. No me voy a disculpar por mi posición como mujer y de como pienso acerca de estos casos, yo defiendo y defenderé siempre en mi gremio, y aunque estaré hablando de un par de posiciones altamente machistas, no estoy generalizando ni metiendo a todos los hombres en el mismo paquete.
Haciendo este disclaimer me dispongo a presentarles: Sé dócil: Oración y obediencia y Nuestro padre.
Sé dócil: Oración y obediencia
Para mí no es sencillo hablar de algo que tiene que ver con el tema religioso, y tal vez muchos no quieran ver esto precisamente porque sé que es muy polémico, pero hay veces que sin importar qué, todo sbrepasa la polémica y nos pasamos al mismo bando, y este es uno de estos caso. Cuando nos adentramos en esta serie documental dirigida por Rachel Dretzin y Grace McNally, te das cuenta de que aunque se hable de una secta religiosa, solo usan a Dios y a las enseñanzas como excusa para cometer los crímenes más atroces en su nombre y esto le da un punto de repugnancia de lo más desagradable.
Para ponerlos en contexto, la historia se centra en la Iglesia Fundamentalista de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días (IFDS), que es una organización fundamentalista mormona. Podría decirse, para que entiendan el contexto, son extremistas. Cuando se separan de la iglesia Mormona, escogen a un único jefe, Rulon Jeff, el cual reconocen como El Profeta. Son conocidos a nivel mundial por ser polígamos, cada hombre de poder podía casarse con cuantas mujeres accediera El Profeta. Estas mujeres no decidían con quién decidían con quien debían hacerlo, todo estaba bajo el pedido de El profeta al padre de la mujer en cuestión.
En el momento el que muere Rulon, su hijo, Warren Jeff, empieza a hacerse con el cargo y se autoproclama El Profeta, en el año 2002. Aquí comienza a aplicar cambios muy fuertes, como prohibir el acceso a la información y a la manera en que las mujeres de la congregación deben actuar, vestir y peinarse. Y es cuando la cosa empieza a tornarse oscura, porque las "mujeres" a las que empiezan a acceder son a chicas de 14 años.
No quiero decir más, porque si hasta aquí les está empezando a causar curiosidad, deben esperar a terminar el documental. Este está narrado por víctimas reales que formaban parte de la secta, e incluso que se enfrentaron judicialmente con Warren Jeffs, quien fue uno de los 10 hombres más buscados del FBI durante la época, junto a Osama Bin Laden, esto es, solo para que tengan un pequeño abreboca de quién es ese señor.
Ante la premisa "Sé dócil" que es una regla impuesta ante las mujeres y niñas de la secta, ya podemos saber de qué se trata todo esto: no tienes derecho a hablar, a quejarte, a decidir sobre ti ni sobre tus hijos, únicamente debes verte devente, vestir como El profeta diga y actuar bajo las órdenes de tu esposo. Esto es lo que más ruido me hizo, porque recordemos que estas mujeres fueron despojadas de todo tipo de información, no sabían que existía más allá del pueblo en el que vivían todos. No tenían radio ni televisión, no podían usar el teléfono, no sabían nada de lo que ocurría en el exterior. La única referencia posible que tenían era con las creencias con que habían crecido, que les habían inculcado hombres de poder.
Debo hacer hincapié en que ningún hombre debería arrebatarle los derechos a ninguna mujer, en la mayoría de los países, todo lo que les hicieron a estas mujeres está prohibido y es penado por la ley. Es un caso mayor de machismo y violencia de género, el que le quites, incluso, el derecho a trabajar y a decidir que hacer con tu vida es una clara ofensa a los derechos humanos, y cada vez que iba viendo me llenaba más de ira por lo que les estaban haciendo. Escuchar los testimonios de estas mujeres que lograron irse es desgarrador.
Nadie debe ser despojado de sus derechos, nadie. Mucho menos cuando los adoctrinan desde el momento en que nacen, en que su único propósito en la vida es ser propiedad de un hombre, y solo con el fin de actuar a favor de su ego. Y actuar en nombre de Dios me parece un acto más asqueroso aún, una persona creyente y amante del creador iba a ser lo que fuera. Porque no estamos hablando nada más del adoctrinamiento de mujeres, los hombres también caen en esto desde que nacen, los moldean y les dicen que es lo que deben hacer, como deben actuar, de qué manera deben tratar a sus esposas. Y no estoy hablando del tema de la poligamia, porque realmente este no es el tema del que trata esta miniserie, aquí se trata de como usaron a mujeres jóvenes para casarse con adultos mayores y de como la despojaron de sus derechos. De como Warren Jeffs movía a todos como marionetas tras una fachada "amable". Veo su cara y provoca darle tres puñetazos, es el tipo de hombres que provoca mucho asco, y de seguro, si ven el documental hasta el final, les daría más asco aún.
No sé si será del agrado de alguno de los que logre leerme hasta acá, porque sé que no a mucha gente les agradan los documentales, a muchos les parecen aburridos. Pero hay cosas que ocurren en el mundo, que han pasado, y que tenemos el derecho a ver. El plan original era traerles dos documentales, pero me estresé tanto recordando este que era imposible seguir con otro que me causara tanta indignación como este.
Cada vez son más los documentales creados por mujeres y que exponen todo lo que les han hecho, y creo que es necesario seguir exponiendo estos casos. Sobre todo, cuando son hombres de poder que sobrepasan todas las leyes para salirse con la suya. Yo seguiré trayendo este tipo de temas, porque de verdad que son necesarios. Y debo hacer hincapié en que sé que hay mujeres demoníacas también, y que de seguro las llegaré a exponer, porque soy fiel creyente de la igualdad, y que en este mundo hay de todo y que hay que exponerlo todo para que sepan que tipo de personas existen, y saber como actuar y que enseñarles a nuestros hijos.
La espiritualidad, la religión y el amor a Dios, es una de las cosas más fundamentales de la vida, todos tienen derecho a acceder, todos los niños deberían crecer en un hogar donde la espiritualidad forme parte, esto les da valores para crecer como ser humano, pero también sepan que cuando crezcan pueden tomar la decisión de irse si gustan y sin ser apartados de todo lo que aman porque no estén de acuerdo con algo.
Espero que con esta reseña haya abierto un poco la curiosidad y les provoque verla, si no es así, pues igual seguiré, porque hay casos de los que quiero enterarme y seguir acostándome a las 3 de la mañana porque no puedo dejar de ver ni un solo capítulo.
