Tetris (2023) review: from Russia with love.

Despite the fact that my first impressions had not been particularly positive and I felt that I was about to see the extension of a trailer made as a way of parody, I tried to make a superhuman effort to watch "Tetris" disconnected from any kind of prejudice. that could affect my enjoyment, something necessary if you consider the dichotomy so marked that there was between the opinions of the public (generally positive) and what my instincts told me.

The point is that although Tetris is an extremely formulaic product that represents one more number in an ocean of biopics and generic stories, it also has a large number of successes that make it a very entertaining film, which, beyond the creative liberties that were taken with the real story, as well as its inconsistent tone, knows how to effectively capture the love that the general public (And the entrepreneurs / programmers behind it) felt for Tetris in the mid-80s.

You see, Tetris (The Movie) portrays a slightly exaggerated version of all the contractual problems that Alexey Pajitnov's brilliant creation faced within the Soviet Union in 1984, most of the footage therefore focuses on the conflict that Henk Rogers lived through, trying to acquire the international reproduction and commercialization rights of tetris within computers, video game consoles, and arcade.

Although in general terms the events of the film coincide with what happened in real life, there is a fictional conflict involving a portion of the Soviet Union that was advocating for Robert Maxwell to acquire the rights to the puzzle game in exchange for Rogers. .

If I had to point out one flaw that can affect the "Tetris" experience, it would be the film's obsession with tackling different angles of a story that has become too dense to cover in less than two hours of film, Pajitnov (The original creator ), for example, takes a supporting role to an unnecessarily idealized Henk Rogers, who seems more interested in sugarcoating the idea of the American dream than in serving as the protagonist for a stimulating story.

It doesn't help that the tone and presentation of Tetris fluctuates so much throughout the film, unorganically mixing a serious, dramatic style with fast-paced, humorous moments, as well as an intermittent effort to hold on to the aesthetic. -bit to create title cards or transitional scenes.

No quiero que me malinterpreten, Tetris es una película divertida que aterriza con eficacia la mayoría de sus ideas, y hay un par de libertades creativas que se aprecian bastante, no obstante, al menos para mí, no es homenaje suficiente para la creación de una de las piezas más importantes de la cultura popular.
