Breaking Bad ended almost 10 years ago and I feel that since it there has not been another full-length series that manages to captivate both critics and the average viewer in the same way, for example, Game Of Thrones started with verve, and maintained the level until beyond the middle of its seasons, but in the end it ended up destroyed by the complexity of its own plot and the inability to have the patience to close the plot points properly.
We also had a couple of great mini series, True Detective I, Chernobyl or the recent Queen’s Gambit.
The thing is that Breaking Bad existed at a very specific moment in history where many factors contributed to give it the status it currently has, with spin offs like Better Call Saul or the movie “El Camino” the myth only grows and it grows.
The reasons, as I said, are not exactly few, Created by Vince Gilligan and produced by AMC (Yes, along with Mad Men and the first seasons of The Walking Dead all the weight of the company is loaded) Breaking Bad is a solid series and well built, which in a simple but interesting premise chooses several of the most complex characters that have been seen on television since The Wire and The Sopranos began the golden age.
Although it is far from being as deep and abstract as Mad Men, or lacking the large cast of The Soprano, Breaking Bad is a testament to the love of the seventh art in each of its takes.
As many of you already know, Breaking Bad could be defined as a drama with shades of black comedy, which follows the story of Walter White, a brilliant and little recognized professor of Chemistry who after being diagnosed with lung cancer decides to take advantage of his knowledge to start with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, to produce and traffic methamphetamine.
With such a crude approach to criminal life that at times it feels more like humor than thriller, Bryan Cranston in the role of Walter White presents an organic and terrifying evolution, where the conventions that we understand as protagonist/hero and antagonist/villain are challenged.
The truth, although his narrative is brilliant, I feel that the true appeal of Breaking Bad is in its visual execution and the rhythm of it, established by Gilligan from its first episode which he of course directs.
Influenced by greats like Tarantino, if there are two things that stand out in Breaking Bad, they are the frames and the dialogues, which blend perfectly creating a unique identifier, with the deserts of New Mexico in the background.
Every detail in Breaking Bad is included with surgical precision, from the musical themes that occasionally accompany its scenes, to the color of the clothes its characters wear.
All these efforts of course end up paying, delivering a magnetic experience where despite its slow pace you cannot stop watching.
Each story beat is shocking and so masterfully assembled that even in the reviews of the series it is not boring, you can watch it over and over again without losing the feeling of emotions from the beginning.
A world rich in characters and locations, where we learn to give importance to every detail, no matter how small, with clear rules and absolute respect for the viewer, not wanting to lead anyone by the hands and allowing freedom to support whoever we want. .
Although in principle I only mention the role of Bryan Cranston as Walter White, I would like to highlight all the rest of the cast, both main and secondary, Anna Gunn, Giancarlo Esposito, Aaron Paul, Dean Norris ... they all contribute their grain of sand, they all have narrative arcs engaging and well trained from the beginning of the series.
I saw Breaking Bad at a very young age, and it totally changed my way of seeing cinema and television, an exponent of its format that deserves all the acclaim it receives, it went directly to the Olympus of the greats and does not feel like leaving.

La cosa es que Breaking Bad existió en un momento muy específico de la historia en donde muchos factores contribuyeron para darle el estatus con el que cuenta actualmente, con spin offs como Better Call Saul o la película de “El Camino” el mito solo crece y crece.
La razones, como dije, no son precisamente pocas, Creada por Vince Gilligan y producida por AMC (Si, junto a Mad Men y las primeras temporadas de The Walking Dead se carga todo el peso de la compañía) Breaking Bad es un serie sólida y bien construida, que en una premisa simple pero interesante escoge varios de los personajes más complejos que se han podido ver en la televisión desde que The Wire y Los Soprano dieron inicio a la edad de oro.
Aunque dista de ser tan profunda y abstracta como Mad Men, o carece del cuantioso elenco de The Soprano, Breaking Bad es un testamento del amor al séptimo arte en cada una de sus tomas.
Como muchos saben ya, Breaking Bad podría definirse como un drama con tintes de comedia negra, que sigue la historia de Walter White, un brillante y poco reconocido profesor de Química que luego de ser diagnosticado con cancer de pulmón decide aprovechar sus conocimientos para iniciar con un ex-alumno, Jesse Pinkman, a producir y traficar metanfetamina.
Con un acercamiento tan crudo a la vida criminal que a veces se siente más como humor que como thriller, Bryan Cranston en el rol de Walter White presenta una evolución orgánica y terrorífica, en donde tontas las convenciones de que entendemos como protagonista/héroe y antagonista/villano se ven desafiadas.
La verdad, aunque su narrativa es brillante, siento que el verdadero atractivo de Breaking Bad esta en su ejecución visual y su ritmo, establecido por Gilligan desde su primer episodio el cual por supuesto dirige.
Influenciado por grandes como Tarantino, si hay dos cosas que se resaltan en Breaking Bad son los encuadres y los diálogos, que se mezclan perfectamente creando una identifica única, con los desiertos de Nuevo México de fondo.
Cada detalle en Breaking Bad está incluido con una precisión quirúrgica, desde los temas musicales que acompañan sus escenas ocasionalmente, hasta el color de la ropa que usan sus personajes.
Todos esos esfuerzos por supuesto terminan pagando, entregando una experiencia magnética en donde a pesar de su ritmo lento no puedes dejar de ver.
Cada story beat es impactante y tan magistralmente montado que incluso en los repasos de la serie no aburre, puedes verla una y otra vez sin perder la sensación de emociones del principio.
Un mundo rico en personajes y locaciones, en donde aprendemos a darle importancia a cada detalle por pequeño que sea, con reglas claras y un respeto absoluto por el espectador, sin ánimos de llevar de las manos a nadie y permitiendo libertad para apoyar a quien deseemos.
Aunque en principio solo mencione el rol de Bryan Cranston como Walter White quisiera resaltar a todo el resto del cast, tanto principal como secundario, Anna Gunn, Giancarlo Esposito, Aaron Paul, Dean Norris… todos aportan su grano de arena, todos tienen arcos narrativos atrapantes y bien formados desde el inicio de la serie.
Vi Breaking Bad a una edad muy temprana, y cambió totalmente mi forma de ver el cine y la televisión, un exponente de su formato que merece todas las aclamaciones que recibe, pasó directamente al Olimpo de los grandes y no tiene ánimos de irse.
