En estos días que he estado sin servicio de Internet, no me ha quedado más remedio que ponerme a arreglar aquí y allá, actualizando los quehaceres del hogar.
Al tener todo al día y como tampoco podía ver Netflix porque ya sabemos que funciona solo con Wifi, me tocó ponerme a ver películas en DirecTV (ya sabemos que son películas viejas), me topé ayer con Patch Adams. Nunca la había visto desde el principio.
A pesar de saber la historia de Hunter Adams, pues es algo que nos tenemos que aprender cuando ingresamos al maravilloso mundo de Doctor Sonrisa, fundación para la que trabajé bastante tiempo, hace ya más de cuatro años, siempre es bueno volverla a ver. Es una de esas películas que nunca aburren y que te dejan una sensación de alegría al terminar de verlas.
Basada en hechos reales, esta película protagonizada por Robin Williams en el año 1988, nos cuenta la historia de Hunter Adams, médico estadounidense.

La película comienza cuando Hunter Adams está recluido voluntariamente en una institución mental, por haber intentado suicidarse tres veces, ya que tenía una personalidad depresiva, sin ningún propósito de vida. Un día, hablando con uno de sus compañeros, que tenía una taza rota, Adams le coloca un parche y el otro le dice unas palabras acerca de su manera de enfocar la vida, aconsejándole que vea las cosas no solamente a través de sus ojos, sino desde el punto de vista de los demás y por el parche en la taza, le puso el sobrenombre "Parche".
Al poner ese consejo en práctica con su compañero de cuarto, se da cuenta de lo ciertas que son esas palabras y de inmediato, la alegría y el entusiasmo le dan un nuevo giro a su vida y decide que quiere ser médico, porque después de experimentar la relación entre médico-paciente y la frialdad con la que los doctores tratan a sus enfermos, quiere mejorar la calidad de vida y la salud de los pacientes, argumentando que la muerte debe ser tratada con dignidad y sentido del humor.
Es entonces que toma la decisión de salir de esta institución y comenzar a estudiar medicina en la Universidad de Virginia.
El ingreso a la universidad
Desde que llegó a la universidad, fue mal recibido por su compañero de cuarto, en primer lugar por ser un hombre mayor que todos los estudiantes, por su ropa divertida y llena de colores y por su sentido del humor.
Mitch, su compañero de cuarto, es un joven cuya familia es mayormente de médicos y él quiere seguir esos pasos, tomándose la vida y los estudios muy en serio, a diferencia de Adams, que a todo le ve el lado divertido.
Cuando conoce a Carin, queda perdidamente enamorado de ella, pero la chica se muestra pedante y distante hacia él.
El único que le da la bienvenida y se divierte con sus locuras es Truman, uno de los estudiantes de medicina.
Un dolor de cabeza
Este es Parche, definitivamente. Un dolor de cabeza para los médicos y profesores de la universidad, por su irreverencia, su desapego absoluto a las etiquetas impuestas en la universidad y por desobedecer las órdenes que le daban sus profesores, de no acercarse a los enfermos, hasta estar en el tercer año de estudios.
Sus calificaciones lo hacen el mejor estudiante, sin apenas coger un libro de medicina. Sus compañeros se centran en la teoría, estudiando y tratando de memorizar todo palabra por palabra, Patch se enfoca en tratar bien a los enfermos, conocer sus nombres, sus gustos y hacerlos reír. Esto a los médicos no les gusta y Patch siempre está en problemas y recibiendo sanciones, pero poco a poco se va ganando el afecto y el apoyo de las enfermeras del hospital.
Cambio de actitud
A medida que va pasando el tiempo, los compañeros de Adams, comienzan a darse cuenta que los métodos e ideologías nada convencionales de Patch, son realmente asombrosos, porque dan mejores resultados que los métodos tradicionales, como la disminución de la ingesta de medicamentos, la alegría que es directamente proporcional a la mejoría de la salud.
Poco a poco, la amistad entre Carin y Patch, se convierte en romance, pues ella comenzó a sentir admiración ante la manera de Patch de ver la vida, su deseo de ayudar a los pacientes a reír y tratarlos como verdaderas personas y no como a un número de habitación... "el paciente de la habitación 402" o "el paciente de cáncer de páncreas". El siempre quiso crear vínculos más humanos y que los enfermos olvidasen por momentos su enfermedad.
Carin le confiesa que fue abusada sexualmente de niña y por eso se mostraba tan distante con él y con cualquier hombre que se le acercase y que cuando se sentía peor, se imaginaba que era una mariposa y así lograba escapar de su dolorosa realidad, pero que al ir conociendo poco a poco a Patch, se dio cuenta que él también había sufrido mucho, por distintas razones y al ver su actitud positiva ante la vida y su ferviente deseo de ayudar a los demás, ella se fue enamorando de él.
El proyecto
Con el apoyo de sus compañeros de estudios y su recién adquirida novia Carin, Patch crea el Instituto Gesundheit!, en una casa vieja que un ex compañero del psiquiátrico donde Patch estuvo internado, le donó para contribuir a hacer realidad su sueño. Sus amigos y él se ponen a pintar la casa, arreglarla lo más que podían para poder comenzar a recibir esos pacientes que no tenían seguro médico, ni dinero para comprar medicinas.
Pronto su sueño se convierte en realidad y cuenta además de sus amigos, con la ayuda ad honorem de las enfermeras del hospital.
Un día, mientras Carin estaba sola en el instituto Gesundheit, recibe una llamada de un paciente perturbado llamado Larry, que le pide que vaya a visitarlo. Ella, en su deseo de ayudarlo, se dirige hacia allá, con un poco de temor. Resulta que Larry, más que perturbado, estaba completamente loco y la asesina, suicidándose poco después.
El desenlace
Adams se entera de la noticia, por uno de sus mentores, quien le ofrece su apoyo. La muerte de su amada Carin, lo deja devastado y sin ánimos para continuar, cuestionando la bondad de las personas. Sintiéndose culpable, decide abandonar su sueño y retirarse del instituto. Su amigo Truman le dice que no puede irse, pero Patch no quiere continuar.
Por su mente, la idea del suicidio, volvió a apoderarse de él. Y es allí, en soledad, al borde de un abismo, ve una mariposa posarse en su maletín. Esto le recuerda a Carin y de inmediato sonríe sintiendo de nuevo la esperanza, por lo que decide continuar con su labor, en memoria de la joven.
El problema, es que cuando los médicos se enteraron que él dirigía una institución de salud sin tener licencia para ello, es expulsado de la universidad. Sin embargo, él decide presentar una queja formal ante el concejo de médicos, asesorado por Mitch, quien fue su antiguo compañero de cuarto.
El concejo médico, le otorga una audiencia en la que se decidiría si Patch debía o no graduarse. Él explica que quiere ayudar a mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas enfermas y no solamente tratar la enfermedad corporal, sin también alimentar su espíritu a través de la risa y que así no le permitan continuar, él lo seguirá haciendo, pero les dice que de corazón, quiere graduarse de médico.
Es entonces cuando entran en la sala un grupo de niños, pacientes de cáncer a los que Patch les llevaba alegría y se ponen todos la nariz de payaso, en apoyo a Adams. Esto termina de convencer a los médicos, que así los métodos sean poco ortodoxos, él tiene el conocimiento, es el mejor estudiante de su clase, por lo que le permiten graduarse.
Sin embargo, Patch siempre tan irreverente, el día de la graduación y después de recibir su diploma, deja ver su trasero desnudo debajo de su toga, a sus profesores, demás graduandos y público en general.
Mi opinión 
Patch Adams, es sin duda, una de las mejores películas que he visto. A pesar de que siempre la veía cuando ya había comenzado, me atrapada. Me hace reír, llorar y reflexionar. Me hace pensar que es cierto, que todo es cuestión de actitud, que con la risa y la alegría, logramos más que con seriedad. Cuando trabajé en Doctor Sonrisa, comprendí el valor del ánimo, de la alegría. Si para uno, como payaso de hospital, es tan grato alegrar el día a un paciente, a quien lo está consumiendo la ansiedad, imagínense lo que representa para esa persona postrada en una cama, recibir personas vestidas con alegres colores, con sonrisas, llevándoles alegría.
Mi hermana es sobreviviente de cáncer de mamas, grado 3, dos veces. Los dolores eran terribles, el malestar causado por la quimio y la radioterapia, la pérdida de su cabello y su posterior mastectomía, lo cual la hizo llorar mucho en algunos momentos, porque perdió su esencia femenina. Pero ¿saben qué la curó? Su alegría, su risa y su deseo de vivir. Además que ninguno de nosotros, la trató jamás con lástima, sino con entusiasmo. Sin mencionar el excelente cirujano que llevaba su proceso. Un médico amable, cariñoso, lleno de buena vibra, que le inyectaba siempre energía de la buena a mi hermana.
Crítica 
Lo único que puedo decir en este sentido, es que quien fue asesinado en la vida real por un paciente desequilibrado, no fue la novia de Patch, sino su mejor amigo. Supongo que se hizo para darle un toque meramente dramático a la película. Aparte de eso, no tengo nada más que decir en contra.

El verdadero Patch Adams
Su nombre es Hunter Doherty Adams. Nació en Washintong, D.C, Estados Unidos, el 28 de mayo de 1945. Es médico y activista social. Desde que era estudiante de medicina, soñaba con tener un lugar para atender a las personas, sin cobrarles, por considerar que la medicina debería ser un intercambio de amor y no, una transacción monetaria. Es por esto que, en colaboración con unos amigos, fundaron el Gesundheit! Institute, en el año 1972.
En la actualidad, Patch es un aclamado conferencista y lo que gana por cada conferencia, lo invierte en le instituto Gesundheit!

In these days that I have been without Internet service, I had no choice but to fix here and there, updating the chores at home.
Having everything up to date and since I couldn't watch Netflix either because we already know that it only works with Wifi, I had to start watching movies on DirecTV (we already know they are old movies), I stumbled upon Patch Adams yesterday. I had never seen it from the beginning.
Despite knowing the story of Hunter Adams, as it is something we have to learn when we enter the wonderful world of Doctor Smile, a foundation for which I worked for a long time, more than four years ago, it is always good to see it again. It is one of those movies that never gets boring and leaves you with a feeling of joy when you finish watching it.
Based on true events, this film starring Robin Williams in 1988, tells the story of Hunter Adams, an American doctor.

The film begins when Hunter Adams is voluntarily confined in a mental institution, for having attempted suicide three times, as he had a depressive personality, with no purpose in life. One day, talking to one of his companions, who had a broken cup, Adams puts a patch on it and the other says a few words to him about his approach to life, advising him to see things not only through his eyes, but from the point of view of others and because of the patch on the cup, he gave him the nickname "Patch".
When he put that advice into practice with his roommate, he realizes how true those words are and immediately, joy and enthusiasm give his life a new turn and he decides that he wants to be a doctor, because after experiencing the doctor-patient relationship and the coldness with which doctors treat their patients, he wants to improve the quality of life and health of patients, arguing that death should be treated with dignity and a sense of humor.
It is then that he makes the decision to leave this institution and begin studying medicine at the University of Virginia.
University Admission
Since he arrived at the university, he was unwelcome by his roommate, first of all for being a man older than all the students, for his funny and colorful clothes and for his sense of humor.
Mitch, his roommate, is a young man whose family is mostly doctors and he wants to follow in those footsteps, taking life and studies very seriously, unlike Adams, who sees the funny side of everything.
When he meets Carin, he falls madly in love with her, but the girl is pedantic and distant towards him.
The only one who welcomes him and is amused by his follies is Truman, one of the medical students.
A headache
This is Patch, definitely. A headache for the doctors and professors at the university, for his irreverence, his absolute detachment to the labels imposed at the university and for disobeying the orders given to him by his professors, not to go near the sick, until he was in his third year of studies.
His grades make him the best student, barely picking up a medical book. His classmates focus on theory, studying and trying to memorize everything word for word, Patch focuses on treating the sick well, knowing their names, their likes and dislikes and making them laugh. The doctors don't like this and Patch is always in trouble and getting penalties, but little by little he is gaining the affection and support of the nurses at the hospital.
Change of attitude
As time goes by, Adams' companions begin to realize that Patch's unconventional methods and ideologies are really amazing, because they give better results than traditional methods, such as decreasing the intake of drugs, the joy that is directly proportional to the improvement of health.
Gradually, the friendship between Carin and Patch turns into romance, as she begins to admire Patch's way of looking at life, his desire to help patients laugh and treat them as real people and not as a room number.... "the patient in room 402" or "the pancreatic cancer patient". He always wanted to create more human bonds and for the patients to forget their illness for a while.
Carin confesses to him that she was sexually abused as a child and that is why she was so distant with him and with any man who approached her and that when she felt worse, she imagined that she was a butterfly and thus managed to escape from her painful reality, but as she gradually got to know Patch, she realized that he had also suffered a lot, for different reasons and seeing his positive attitude towards life and his fervent desire to help others, she fell in love with him.
The project
With the support of his fellow students and his newly acquired girlfriend Carin, Patch creates the Gesundheit! Institute, in an old house that a former colleague from the psychiatric hospital where Patch was hospitalized, donated to him to help make his dream come true. He and his friends started painting the home, fixing it up as much as they could to be able to start receiving those patients who had no medical insurance and no money to buy medicine.
Soon his dream becomes a reality and he counts not only on his friends, but also on the ad honorem help of the hospital nurses.
One day, while Carin was alone at the Gesundheit Institute, she receives a call from a disturbed patient named Larry, who asks her to visit him. She, in her desire to help him, heads over there, with some trepidation. It turns out that Larry, rather than disturbed, was completely insane and murders her, committing suicide shortly thereafter.
The denouement
Adams learns the news from one of his mentors, who offers his support. The death of his beloved Carin, leaves him devastated and discouraged to continue, questioning the goodness of people. Feeling guilty, he decides to abandon his dream and withdraw from the institute. His friend Truman tells him he can't leave, but Patch doesn't want to continue.
Through his mind, the thought of suicide, once again seized him. And it is there, in solitude, on the edge of an abyss, he sees a butterfly landing on his briefcase. This reminds him of Carin and he immediately smiles, feeling hope again, so he decides to continue his work, in memory of the young woman.
The problem is that when the doctors found out that he was running a health care institution without a license, he is expelled from the university. However, he decides to file a formal complaint with the doctors' council, advised by Mitch, who was his former roommate.
The medical council gives him a hearing to decide whether or not Patch should graduate. He explains that he wants to help improve the quality of life of sick people and not only treat the physical illness, but also nourish their spirit through laughter and that even if they do not allow him to continue, he will continue to do so, but he tells them that from the bottom of his heart, he wants to graduate as a doctor.
It is then that a group of children enter the room, cancer patients to whom Patch brought joy and they all put on their clown noses in support of Adams. This ends up convincing the doctors that even if the methods are unorthodox, he has the knowledge, he is the best student in his class, so they allow him to graduate.
However, Patch, always so irreverent, on graduation day and after receiving his diploma, shows his bare bottom under his gown to his professors, other graduates and the general public.
My opinion
Patch Adams, is without a doubt, one of the best movies I've ever seen. Even though I always watched it when it had already started, it got me. It makes me laugh, cry and reflect. It makes me think that it is true, that everything is a matter of attitude, that with laughter and joy, we achieve more than with seriousness. When I worked in Doctor Smile, I understood the value of courage, of joy. If for one, as a hospital clown, it is so pleasant to brighten the day of a patient, who is consumed by anxiety, imagine what it means for that person bedridden, to receive people dressed in cheerful colors, with smiles, bringing them joy.
My sister is a breast cancer survivor, grade 3, twice. The pains were terrible, the discomfort caused by chemo and radiation therapy, the loss of her hair and her subsequent mastectomy, which made her cry a lot at times, because she lost her feminine essence. But do you know what cured her? Her joy, her laughter and her desire to live. Besides, none of us ever treated her with pity, but with enthusiasm. Not to mention the excellent surgeon who handled her process. A kind, loving doctor, full of good vibes, who always injected good energy to my sister.
Critique
The only thing I can say in this regard, is that the one who was killed in real life by an unbalanced patient, was not Patch's girlfriend, but his best friend. I guess it was done to give a purely dramatic touch to the movie. Other than that, I have nothing else to say against it.

The real Patch Adams
His name is Hunter Doherty Adams. He was born in Washintong, D.C, United States, on May 28, 1945. He is a physician and social activist. Since he was a medical student, he dreamed of having a place to take care of people, without charging them, considering that medicine should be an exchange of love and not a monetary transaction. That is why, in collaboration with some friends, he founded the Gesundheit! Institute in 1972.
Today, Patch is an acclaimed lecturer and invests the proceeds from his lectures in the Gesundheit!
