2020 came and went, and then the world was met with a situation that changed it forever. Everything that happened during the pandemic felt like a movie. However, it is those who have not had firsthand experience with it that can see it as a movie.
Ever since the pandemic, for me, I no longer think that whatever happens in movies stays in the movies. Who would have thought that what we saw in movies, the outbreak of a virus causing global hysteria and putting the world in a dystopia, could actually happen and keep us indoors? Not me, or anyone I know. Now, try to picture a world where you have an outbreak of unimaginable monsters. Yeah, an unimaginable situation indeed.
The Silence is a movie that depicts a similar situation. We have people (maybe scientists) exploring uncharted territory and then finding a hidden cavern. Another whole new world to explore, they may have thought. However, it is much more of a cataclysmic discovery that they have made. And such a discovery that now brings catastrophy to the world.
The movie was released in 2019, based on a novel of the same name. I had known about it for a long time and even heard how "interesting" it was, but never really checked it out. This is because I felt it may just be like an already popular movie, A Quiet Place. I very much enjoyed both parts of A Quiet Place, so I wasn't down for seeing something just like it again. However, since it's #spookymonth, I figured I'd start with The Silence, which has been on my list for quite some time.
A group of researchers explored the Appachalian Trail, and 1000 feet below, they discovered an uncharted cavern. They unearth an unknown species of flying creatures that hunt by sound and destroy everything that produces sound.
These creatures, now known as "vesps," spread and infested the entire city. With their destructive nature, they wreak havoc in the city, esuing hysteria in people and placing the city in emergency situations.

Ally Andrews was a teenage girl who lost her hearing in an accident that claimed the lives of her paternal grandparents. Together with her family, they decide to live in the city as it is a place where absolute silence is impossible for them to survive.
As they journey into the woods, the vesps catch up with them and they are faced with threatening situations that inhibit them from fulfilling the rule, "Do not make noise," to survive.
The movie starts with suspenseful music. So just right away, one may have the feeling that one is in for quite a treat. Then it all transfigured into a more gentle setting, depicting the regular day before the whole situation with the vesps comes up.
What is then depicted is the life of a normal family with a deaf daughter, who deals with stigmatism in her school, until the emergency news breaks in. This is the typical introduction we have for most thriller films like this. It's the standard.
The film portrays the most likely approach most people (or families) would take in situations where mass hysteria hits the whole world. Survival becomes the top of their priority list for most, and you find many desserting people they should care about just to save their own heads.
I had expected that it would contain sudden moments where one would be startled by situations that would make one on edge about what would happen (as it should be), but I really could not help comparing it with two movies that had been released a year before the film; A Quiet Place and Birdbox.
The similarities I found made me question why people had hyped this movie so much. But then, I realised not everyone would have seen those two films, A Quiet Place and Birdbox.
Most stories you have with thriller movies, especially ones of this kind (apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic), are usually pretty straight-forward. It is the twists and turns that we are served with that make them special.
The twists and turns are what I signed up for. So, any thriller film had better not go in the direction I would anticipate. The "on-edge" feeling comes mostly when I am uncertain about what comes next.
This film did well to follow the standard. I mean, I knew how the story was going to end. It's the whole typical "try to survive, and then find some place really safe to stay" scenario, which is okay. But the fact is that things that one would not expect kept happening.
...kept happening.
But to be honest, they were things very much like what I had seen in movies before.
They couldn't make any noise, similar to what we saw in A Quiet Place, and then there's this group of antagonists who have no bearing on the plot. It almost felt like I was seeing a "bat" version of A Quiet Place.
In A Quiet Place, you find an alien, rather than bats in The Silence. Over there, you cannot make noise, have to live far away from people that could increase the risk of drawing the creatures, and have to communicate with sign language.
The strangest similarity is that the Andrews had to learn sign language because of their daughter, Ally. The exact same situation is what we have in A Quiet Place; the Abbotts had to learn because of Regan, their daughter.
Anyone who has seen A Quiet Place or Birdbox will notice many similarities and may not enjoy this film as much. If one were to see this movie with an open mind, regardless of having seen similar movies prior, one may actually appreciate the effort put into the story.
There is, however, one shortcoming in this movie. Its ending is one that I will not commend. It seemed as though the producers had run out of ideas to implement and just needed to end it somehow. It wasn't bad, only too quick of an ending.
If you are going to make a thriller movie, especially one with a not-so-long storyline, nailing the visual story-telling should be at the top of the list. This is because compelling visuals are very necessary in enunciating the whole point of the story.
It's quite impressive how the film industry has grown so much. Now, we have unreal characters come to life in films, which makes them seem like they really exist.
I will commend this movie for delivering such a wonderful rendering of the pterosaur-like creatures, the vesps. In the little time I learned 3D works, I got to understand the time, computing power, and effort that go into 3D rendering.

For an apocalyptic (or post-apocalyptic) movie to tell its story well, it needs to be spot-on perfect with its lighting. What we have here is proper lighting that is well blended with the story in many of its scenes.
One thing peculiar to these kinds of films is that they usually have very few main characters. This makes the film heavily dependent on the very few main roles. Every glitch in character representation is going to be spotted somehow.
A bulleye performance is often required for films like this, and it did not deliver less. Each actor played their parts just as they should, well enough to enunciate the story they were trying to tell.
It is not easy to have children deliver well in films like this. This is mainly because they are usually just starting out in their careers and may require more time and attention to do their job. I will especially commend Kyle Breitkopf, who played the younger brother of Ally. He displayed very good acting skills that I very much appreciated.
Every other actor in this film, the main characters, performed really well, and I commend their efforts in the movie. It is another reason why one would enjoy The Silence.
I could not help but compare this film with the other films. This is because of the striking resemblance in their storylines. However, putting those films aside, it is a film that I would certainly be glad to see in its sequel. But I do not think that'll be happening.
The Silence was released in 2019, and A Quiet Place and Birdbox were released in 2018. There sure was enough time to adjust the storyline and all. But I guess making films really doesn't come easy.
Taking into consideration all that goes into making films and that life shouldn't be too hard, this movie is one I appreciate. I should give The Silence a higher rating, but for the whole storyline "copy-and-paste," I'd only give it a rating of...

El año 2020 llegó y se fue, y entonces el mundo se encontró con una situación que lo cambió para siempre. Todo lo que ocurrió durante la pandemia pareció una película. Sin embargo, son los que no lo han vivido en primera persona los que pueden verlo como una película.
Desde la pandemia, para mí, ya no pienso que lo que pasa en las películas se queda en las películas. ¿Quién iba a pensar que lo que veíamos en las películas, el brote de un virus que provocaba una histeria global y sumía al mundo en una distopía, podía ocurrir realmente y mantenernos encerrados? Ni yo, ni nadie que conozca. Ahora, trata de imaginar un mundo donde hay un brote de monstruos inimaginables. Sí, una situación inimaginable de hecho.
El Silencio es una película que describe una situación similar. Tenemos a personas (tal vez científicos) que exploran un territorio inexplorado y luego encuentran una caverna oculta. Otro mundo completamente nuevo para explorar, pueden haber pensado. Sin embargo, es mucho más un descubrimiento cataclísmico el que han hecho. Y tal descubrimiento que ahora trae la catástrofe al mundo.

La película comienza con una música de suspense. Así que, desde el principio, uno puede tener la sensación de que le espera una gran sorpresa. A continuación, todo se transforma en un escenario más amable, que representa un día normal antes de que surja toda la situación con las vespas.
Lo que se representa entonces es la vida de una familia normal con una hija sorda, que lidia con el estigma en su escuela, hasta que irrumpe la noticia de emergencia. Esta es la típica introducción que tienen la mayoría de las películas de suspense de este tipo. Es el estándar.
La película retrata el enfoque más probable que la mayoría de las personas (o familias) adoptarían en situaciones en las que la histeria masiva golpea a todo el mundo. La supervivencia se convierte en la primera prioridad para la mayoría, y se encuentra a muchos desechando a las personas por las que deberían preocuparse sólo para salvar sus propias cabezas.
Esperaba que contuviera momentos repentinos en los que uno se sobresaltara con situaciones que le hicieran estar en vilo por lo que iba a pasar (como debe ser), pero realmente no pude evitar compararla con dos películas que se habían estrenado un año antes de la película; Un lugar tranquilo y Birdbox.
Las similitudes que encontré me hicieron cuestionar por qué la gente había exagerado tanto esta película. Pero entonces, me di cuenta de que no todo el mundo habría visto esas dos películas, Un lugar tranquilo y Birdbox.
La mayoría de las historias que se cuentan en las películas de suspense, especialmente las de este tipo (apocalípticas/postapocalípticas), suelen ser bastante sencillas. Lo que las hace especiales son los giros que se nos ofrecen.
Los giros y las vueltas son lo que yo me apunté. Así que más vale que cualquier película de suspense no vaya en la dirección que yo esperaba. La sensación de estar "en el filo de la navaja" se produce sobre todo cuando no estoy seguro de lo que viene a continuación.
Esta película hizo bien en seguir la norma. Es decir, sabía cómo iba a terminar la historia. Es el típico escenario de "intenta sobrevivir y luego encuentra algún lugar realmente seguro donde quedarse", lo cual está bien. Pero el hecho es que seguían ocurriendo cosas que uno no esperaba.
...seguían sucediendo.
Pero para ser honesto, eran cosas muy parecidas a lo que había visto en las películas antes.
No podían hacer ningún ruido, similar a lo que vimos en Un lugar tranquilo, y luego está este grupo de antagonistas que no tienen ninguna relación con la trama. Casi sentí que estaba viendo una versión "murciélago" de Un lugar tranquilo.
En Un lugar tranquilo, te encuentras con un alienígena, en lugar de con murciélagos en El silencio. Allí, no puedes hacer ruido, tienes que vivir lejos de la gente que podría aumentar el riesgo de atraer a las criaturas, y tienes que comunicarte con lenguaje de signos.
La similitud más extraña es que los Andrews tuvieron que aprender el lenguaje de signos por culpa de su hija, Ally. La misma situación es la que tenemos en Un lugar tranquilo; los Abbott tuvieron que aprender por culpa de Regan, su hija.
Cualquiera que haya visto Un lugar tranquilo o Birdbox notará muchas similitudes y puede que no disfrute tanto de esta película. Si uno ve esta película con una mente abierta, independientemente de haber visto películas similares antes, uno puede apreciar el esfuerzo puesto en la historia.
Sin embargo, hay un defecto en esta película. Su final no es digno de elogio. Parece como si los productores se hubieran quedado sin ideas que poner en práctica y necesitaran terminar de alguna manera. No estuvo mal, sólo que fue un final demasiado rápido.
Si se va a hacer una película de suspense, especialmente una con un argumento no muy largo, la narración visual debe ser lo primero de la lista. Esto se debe a que las imágenes convincentes son muy necesarias para enunciar todo el sentido de la historia.
Es impresionante cómo ha crecido tanto la industria del cine. Ahora tenemos personajes irreales que cobran vida en las películas, lo que hace que parezcan existir de verdad.
Quiero elogiar a esta película por ofrecer una representación tan maravillosa de las criaturas parecidas a los pterosaurios, los vesps. En el poco tiempo que aprendí a trabajar en 3D, llegué a comprender el tiempo, la potencia de cálculo y el esfuerzo que supone el renderizado en 3D.

Para que una película apocalíptica (o postapocalíptica) cuente bien su historia, necesita una iluminación perfecta. Lo que tenemos aquí es una iluminación adecuada que está bien mezclada con la historia en muchas de sus escenas.
Una cosa peculiar de este tipo de películas es que suelen tener muy pocos personajes principales. Esto hace que la película dependa en gran medida de los escasos papeles principales. Cualquier fallo en la representación de los personajes va a ser detectado de alguna manera.
En este tipo de películas se suele requerir una actuación de bulto, y ésta no fue menos. Cada actor interpretó sus papeles tal y como debía, lo suficientemente bien como para enunciar la historia que se pretendía contar.
No es fácil que los niños actúen bien en películas como ésta. Esto se debe principalmente a que suelen estar empezando sus carreras y pueden requerir más tiempo y atención para hacer su trabajo. Quiero elogiar especialmente a Kyle Breitkopf, que interpreta al hermano pequeño de Ally. Ha demostrado unas habilidades interpretativas muy buenas que he apreciado mucho.
Todos los demás actores de esta película, los personajes principales, actuaron muy bien, y alabo sus esfuerzos en la película. Es otra de las razones por las que uno puede disfrutar de El silencio.
No pude evitar comparar esta película con las otras. Esto se debe al sorprendente parecido en sus argumentos. Sin embargo, dejando de lado esas películas, es una película que sin duda me alegraría ver en su secuela. Pero no creo que eso ocurra.
El Silencio se estrenó en 2019, y Un lugar tranquilo y Birdbox se estrenaron en 2018. Seguro que hubo tiempo suficiente para ajustar el argumento y todo. Pero supongo que hacer películas realmente no es fácil.
Teniendo en cuenta todo lo que conlleva hacer películas y que la vida no debería ser muy dura, esta película es de las que agradezco. Debería dar a El Silencio una calificación más alta, pero por todo el "copia y pega" del argumento, sólo le daría una calificación de...
