Esta miniserie fue estrenada por HBO en el año 2019, creada por Craig Mazin y dirigida por Johan Renck. Su género es "drama histórico", lo cual significa que la serie esta basada en hechos reales. Los personajes y sus respectivos actores son: Jared Harris como el científico Valeri Legásov; Stellan Skarsgard como Borís Shcherbina, vicepresidente del Consejo de Ministros; Emily Watson como la física nuclear Uliana Jomyuk; Paul Ritter como el ingeniero de la central nuclear Anatoli Diátlov; Jessie Buckley como Liudmila Ignatenko; Adam Nagaitis como el bombero Vasili Ignatenko; Adrian Rawlins como el ingeniero Nikolái Fomín; Con O'Neill como Víktor Briujánov, se podría decir que es el dueño de Chernóbil; David Dencik como Mijaíl Gorbachov, secretario general del Comité Central del Partido Comunista de la Unión Soviética; y un sinfín de personajes más, que para sorpresa de todos nosotros, realmente existieron. El único personaje que nunca existió fue Uliana Jomyuk, ya que ella representa a todos los científicos que apoyaron en la tragedia. Debo acotar que casi todo pasó en la serie ocurrió en la vida real, algunos pequeños detalles fueron añadidos por efectos de drama. El creador leyó e investigó testimonios reales de los que sucedió ese fatídico día y como se llevó a cabo todo, una de las fuentes principales fue el libro ganador del Nobel de Literatura de 2015 "Voces de Chernóbil".

This miniserie was released by HBO in 2019, created by Craig Mazin and directed by Johan Renck. Its genre is "historical drama", which means that the serie is based on real events. The characters and their respective actors are: Jared Harris as scientist Valeri Legasov; Stellan Skarsgard as Boris Shcherbina, deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers; Emily Watson as nuclear physicist Uliana Jomyuk; Paul Ritter as nuclear power plant engineer Anatoli Diátlov; Jessie Buckley as Liudmila Ignatenko; Adam Nagaitis as firefighter Vasili Ignatenko; Adrian Rawlins as engineer Nikolai Fomin; Con O'Neill as Viktor Briukhanov, arguably the owner of Chernobyl; David Dencik as Mikhail Gorbachev, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union; and countless other characters, who to the surprise of us all, actually existed. The only character that never existed was Uliana Jomyuk, since she represents all the scientists who supported the tragedy. I should point out that almost everything that happened in the series occurred in real life, some small details were added for dramatic effects. The creator read and researched real testimonies of what happened that fateful day and how it all took place, one of the main sources was the 2015 Nobel Prize winning book "Voices from Chernobyl".

Muchos conocemos la tragedia nuclear de Chernóbil y como impactó en la ciudad de Prípiat, teniendo que evacuar a absolutamente todos los habitantes de la ciudad por ser víctimas de la radiación. Sin embargo, la serie abarca la mala administración y procesos que hubo durante la tragedia, enfocándonos en el científico Valeri Legásov, el cual fue llamado para ayudar a detener los impactos de la catástrofe. Antes de su muerte, este científico dejó unas cintas contando toda la verdad. Nos muestran como desde antes se pudo haber evitado la tragedia, la cual fue ocasionada por una prueba que simulaba un corte de energía que se basaba en la circulación del agua que transitaba en los generadores de electricidad. Hay que tomar en cuenta que se habían hecho estas mismas pruebas anteriormente pero no habían dado resultados, por lo que la última prueba que se generó era muy arriesgada. Esta prueba fue liderada por Anatoli Diátlov. Es increíble como la serie nos muestra todo lo mal que se ejecutaron los planes para evitar más desastres. Se demoró la evacuación, le mintieron a los países cercanos sobre las magnitud de la catástrofe lo cual generó en que los países donaran artefactos que no estaban aptos para el nivel de radiación, se quería evitar decir la verdad por miedo a manchar el nombre de la Unión Soviética y un sinfín de cosas que pudieron evitarse, solo con decir la verdad.

Many of us are familiar with the Chernobyl nuclear tragedy and how it impacted the city of Pripyat, having to evacuate absolutely everyone in the city because they were victims of radiation. However, the series covers the mismanagement and processes that took place during the tragedy, focusing on the scientist Valeri Legasov, who was called in to help stop the impacts of the catastrophe. Before his death, scientist left tapes telling the whole truth. They show us how the tragedy, which was caused by a test that simulated a power failure based on the circulation of water flowing in the electricity generators, could have been avoided earlier. It should be taken into account that these same tests had been done before but had not yielded results, so the last test that was generated was very risky. This test was led by Anatoli Diátlov. It is amazing how the series shows us how poorly the plans were executed to avoid further disasters. The evacuation was delayed, the nearby countries were lied to about the magnitude of the catastrophe, which caused countries to donate devices that were not suitable for the level of radiation, they wanted to avoid telling the truth for fear of tarnishing the name of the Soviet Union, and an endless number of things that could have been avoided, just by telling the truth.

Las perdidas humanas nos las muestran de una manera que además de gráficas, nos toca la fibra porque las muertes por radiación son sumamente dolorosas y horribles. También nos muestran la historia de Liudmila y Vasili, la cual ocurrió en la vida real, como una pequeña muestra de los civiles que también sufrieron esta tragedia. Más de mil personas sufrieron problemas agudos por la radiación, y no fue porque ellos quisieran arriesgar sus vidas, sino que había ignorancia en el tema, esta ignorancia también es plasmada en los trabajadores del reactor que aunque no querían realizar la prueba, no sabían las repercusiones tan graves que iba a ocasionar esa falla. Los engaños del gobierno llegan a indignar bastante, sin embargo un personaje nos llega a llamar la atención y ese es Borís Shcherbina, el vicepresidente del Consejo de Ministros, el cual va cambiando su perspectiva notando las consecuencias de los engaños del gobierno, que ocasiona que todo sea mal ejecutado. Muchos sucesos llegan a impactar al espectador, y más aún sabiendo que todas esas cosas sucedieron en la vida real. Todo esto es bien representado por la paleta de colores que no muestra lo oscuro que fueron esos días, y además usaron lugares reales ubicados en Lituania para ambientar todo. A su vez, la ambientación musical vino de la mano de la compositora Hildur Guonadóttir, la cual utilizó grabaciones de centrales nucleares reales e hizo que nos adentráramos en un contexto frío, tenso y perturbador.

The human losses are shown in a way that, besides being graphic, touches the heartstrings because the deaths by radiation are extremely painful and horrible. They also show us the story of Liudmila and Vasili, which happened in real life, as a small sample of the civilians who also suffered this tragedy. More than a thousand people suffered acute radiation problems, and it was not because they wanted to risk their lives, but because there was ignorance on the subject, this ignorance is also reflected in the reactor workers that although they did not want to perform the test, they did not know the serious repercussions that such a failure would cause. The deceptions of the government become quite outrageous, however, one character comes to our attention and that is Boris Shcherbina, the vice-president of the Council of Ministers, who changes his perspective noticing the consequences of the government's deceptions, which causes everything to be badly executed. Many events come as a shock to the viewer, and even more so knowing that all these things happened in real life. All this is well represented by the color palette that does not show how dark those days were, and they also used real places located in Lithuania to set the scene. At the same time, the musical setting came from composer Hildur Guonadóttir, who used recordings of real nuclear power plants and made us go into a cold, tense and disturbing context.

Es increíble como se resume correctamente una historia tan amplia en solo 5 episodios. Los personajes están muy bien establecidos no solo por ser basados en personas que de verdad existieron, sino que muestran su peso narrativo e importancia en la historia de esta catástrofe, además de no enfocarse en ser un documental, sino una producción dramática con el fin de mantener al espectador en intriga basados en algo que sucedió en la realidad. Por mucho que sepamos de la historia de este suceso, nos sorprenden las circunstancias en como fue manejada esta crisis, porque es diferente leer extractos históricos, que ver como pudo ocurrir en la vida real. Nos deja satisfechos con el final, no se necesita ni más ni menos, porque todo encaja perfectamente. De verdad es una serie que merece todos los elogios recibidos y que, además, muestra una cara de lo que sucedió y que nos deja pensando sobre muchas cosas que ocurren en el mundo como lo conocemos. Les dejo esta frase que, a mi parecer, puede resumir la serie:

"Cada mentira que contamos es una deuda con la verdad, y tarde o temprano hay que pagarla"

It is incredible how such a broad story is correctly summarized in only 5 episodes. The characters are very well established not only because they are based on people who really existed, but they show their narrative weight and importance in the history of this catastrophe, besides not focusing on being a documentary, but a dramatic production in order to keep the viewer intrigued based on something that happened in reality. As much as we know about the history of this event, we are surprised by the circumstances in which this crisis was handled, because it is different to read historical excerpts, than to see how it could have happened in real life. It leaves us satisfied with the ending, no more or less is needed, because everything fits perfectly. It is truly a series that deserves all the praise received and that, in addition, shows a side of what happened and leaves us thinking about many things that happen in the world as we know it. I leave you with this sentence that, in my opinion, can summarize the series:

"Every lie we tell is a debt to the truth, and sooner or later it has to be paid."
