Finally, after a long wait, I was able to go with my wife (and thanks to her) to the cinema to see the movie I was most looking forward to this year, Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, and we really enjoyed it a lot. I will quickly tell a silly anecdote that happened to me, in case the information is of any use to someone: as usual, before entering we went to buy popcorn and soft drinks, the thing is that the wait in line, although it was very short, it took quite a while, so we entered the room a few minutes late, which made me a little cranky; When I was walking towards the seats that we had assigned, I started looking at the screen so as not to miss what was happening (the scene of Defender Strange with América Chávez) and then to complete it, the popcorn fell on the floor. Luckily, my wife had seen on the internet that if they accidentally fall in the theater, the cinema replaces them for free, so we went to the theater manager and he kindly brought others. So, if this happens to you, do not hesitate to ask them to replace them with new ones.

Going into the matter, this article will contain spoilers of the movie, I thought I would divide it into a part without reveals of the plot and another in which I did spoil everything, but it would be more complicated to structure that way, so I will try not to throw many spoilers at the beginning and as the text progressed, there will be important discoveries that could ruin the emotion when watching the movie, if you still don't know those details, because at this point the web is flooded with spoilers. In any case, you are warned or warned of that. Another thing in which this post will increase, will be in the specification of things that do not seem so good to me, I will start with everything that I liked the most and then I will delve into what could have been better.

As for the film, it has a rather frenetic and accelerated rhythm, it presents moments of pause that are interspersed with the action, but I am referring to the constant transition between scenes, the succession of important events for the plot and the rapid fluctuation between calm and tension, which does not allow you to take your eyes off the screen at any time, if you do not want to miss something important. This may be positive, at least for me it is, but I understand that some people may find it rushed and confusing, especially if you are not well aware of the events shown in other productions such as the WandaVision series. This also somewhat undermines the development of the story, in particular the dramatic part that in this case has a relevant weight for the plot, but that is immersed under several layers of adventure, fantasy and action, so that, surely there will be a those who think that the implicit message that the film has is addressed very vaguely, which has to do with what it really means to be happy and to have enough humility to hand over control of a certain situation to other people, when this is the case it requires.

I understand that having extended the scenes in which these existential dilemmas occur and delving into the feelings of the protagonists, could have given the film more emotionality, but considering that it is a superhero movie, in which the fans hope that be epic and entertaining, with what it gives us it complies perfectly. I think that the dramatic moments are well distributed, they are subtle, yes, but they manage to convey the essence of what happens emotionally inside the characters, in fact, the performances are very convincing, especially that of Elizabeth Olsen in her role of a ruthless villain, like the Scarlet Witch, which I think is great. For his part, Benedict Cumberbatch again makes an impeccable interpretation of the former sorcerer supreme.

Xochitl Gomez's performance as América Chávez pleasantly surprised me, although she doesn't have a very demanding role histrionically speaking, she seemed quite charismatic to me and I think her character is going to become a very loved one among MCU fans. I did not have high expectations about her, since I do not know much about her history in the comics, in addition to the fact that I had never seen the actress before, although now I know that she was part of a Netflix series called The Babysitters Club. The rest of the cast mostly seems to me that they did correct jobs, including cameos, with the exception of Lashana Lynch as a variant of Captain Marvel and Anson Mount as Black Lightning (Black Bolt), they did seem terrible in their respective roles. and I loved that Wanda killed them.

For his part, John Krasinski did not completely convince me as Mr. Fantastic, in reality I have never been very supportive of that desire of the fandom, to have the couple made up of this actor and his wife, Emily Blunt, as Reed Richard and Sue Storm respectively . I don't know if it was that they deliberately didn't put much care into the characters of the Illuminati group, so that we don't sympathize too much with them and in the specific case of Mister Fantastic, then when he has his own movie he can stand out much more than as he did. He did in this cameo, that of course in addition to not stealing the limelight in a feature film that is not starring him, but Doctor Strange. The truth is that, in my opinion, he did not show the character, the presence and above all the intellect that someone who is supposedly the most intelligent person on earth in that universe should have.

As for the tone of the narration, I think the hand of director Sam Raimi is noticeable, who has a long experience in making suspense and horror films, although I would not classify this as a work of the horror genre, it is the darkest and most gloomy so far of all the productions belonging to the UCM, since several sequences make direct reference to iconic moments of horror cinema in general and to several of the previous creations of this filmmaker. It is also obvious that, although there was a good degree of creative freedom from the studio towards the director, there were limits established by Marvel Studios, which prevented a greater degree of graphic violence and gore in the footage, which in my opinion is not bad , because that contributes to a higher collection and those profits are what allow the existence of this universe that those of us who are its fans appreciate so much.

I don't think it's essential for a film to have extremely explicit scenes of violence and sex for it to be good, therefore, although in some cases the use of that resource seems excellent to me, I feel very satisfied when it doesn't appeal to the visceral, but to other more interesting elements. In this case I think that at times there was a good level of suspense, but above all it was a mystical and fantasy adventure, highly entertaining and dynamic, which always maintained the feeling of danger around its protagonists. Finally, there was no major death, as the Illuminati were just supporting characters, whose purpose was not to make us feel pain for their deaths, but rather to make us understand very well the magnitude of the threat represented by Wanda, but the lives of Doctor Strange, Wong , América Chávez and even Christine Palmer 838, always felt in danger, thanks precisely to all the massacre carried out by the Witch around them. Perhaps we were clear that Strange or Chavez would hardly die, but even so we feared for them.

Regarding the graphic part, the aesthetics, the effects, the costumes, the settings... I think all of this has great quality, visually the film is a true spectacle, however, it is not perfect, since there are small details that sometimes they have more impact than they should, such as the third eye that appears on Stephen's forehead at the end of the footage, because it looks a bit strange and that triggers criticism from some people. In particular, I think that this problem with the unconvincing eye can be related in part to the sensation known as the uncanny valley, which is nothing more than the rejection that our brain experiences when faced with graphic representations that are very close to human appearance, but that they present something slightly strange or out of place, like an eye in a place that is not usual for our species.

I have already talked about the different elements that characterize this feature film and that in my opinion make it a good film, but we still haven't touched on the most important aspect, the story it tells us. In this sense, the film is really simple, its plot tells us about the persecution in which América Chávez acts as a Macguffin of the plot, while fleeing from the Scarlet Witch, who is the great villain and who wants to extract her interdimensional travel powers. , a process that would surely kill the girl, but that would allow Wanda to achieve what she most desires, which is to be with her children, even though they belong to a different universe from hers. The protagonist, Doctor Strange, is the one who tries to protect America and prevent the Witch from achieving her mission.

There are no major plot twists, other than the deaths of the Kamar-Taj sorcerers and the Illuminati, which are not exactly changes in the plot's course, but events that are more surprising for their brutality than for how unexpected they could be. . There is a more intimate subplot that corresponds to the relationship between Stephen and Christine, but honestly it is approached in a very superficial way, even though I think it was developed correctly, I think that if the plot is evaluated as something independent of all the spectacularity that surrounds and its connection to the MCU, which is what makes us know and appreciate these characters, so the script is poor. However, the way I see it, the set of all these factors has a greater value than the sum separately of each one of its parts, therefore, I consider that it is a good film.

Mi calificación final para Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness es de 8.5 / 10.

However, in my opinion, it could have been much better and, in fact, I think it should have been much better, since more than a sequel to Doctor Strange, it should have been a kind of mini-event in which the opportunity was used to introduce new characters. and show a little more of other universes, since even though the multiverse is an essential part of the plot, it seems to me that very little was explored, especially compared to what the name "multiverse of madness" proposes. It is not that the leaks had to be fulfilled, nor that the cameos are more important than the plot, but I think a good opportunity was wasted to do things that are very important for the global history of the MCU. I understand that expanding the trip to more universes could prolong the length of the footage too much, but at least Wanda's confrontation with the Illuminati and especially with Professor Charles Xavier, I think it should not have been so fleeting.

For me, the least good thing about the film is that part, if I quite like the deaths themselves, especially that of Black Bolt and Wanda's irony when she says: "which mouth?", but it seems to me that they should have given something of fight. In addition, I did not like the intervention of Mr. Fantastic, nor the jet pack of Captain Carter and that there was no mention of Iron Man, even when the androids that guard Strange are identified with the name of Ultron, I think that they must have mentioned that Tony Stark died at the hands of Thanos or something similar.

To finish, I will briefly talk about the post-credit scenes. I like the first one a lot, mainly because of the inclusion of Charlize Theron, an actress that I love, playing a character that can become as important as Clea, who in the comics has become Supreme Sorceress and also Strange's wife, but beyond that, the scene announces that there has been an incursion, a concept that this film leaves us with and that will have enormous importance in the future of the MCU, which leads to the so-called Secret Wars of the comics. On the contrary, the last scene after the credits, I honestly hate it. I know it's part of the director's references to his previous filmography, but I still hate it and I think it's not consistent that Stephen put a poor man to beat himself up non-stop for days.

My final rating for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is 8.5/10.
