Recientemente el compañero @jcrodriguez, que es un cinéfilo muy conocedor, me recomendó la miniserie de televisión llamada “Devs”, lo hizo en un comentario que me dejo en mi reseña sobre la película Ex-Máquina. La sugerencia fue motivada debido a que al igual que el mencionado largometraje, la serie también está dirigida por el cineasta británico Alex Garland, además el tono y carácter narrativo de ambas producciones son similares, ya que se trata de historias que involucran tecnologías muy avanzadas, pero a la vez bastante realistas, además son relatos dramáticos con tintes de suspenso. En aquel comentario me dijo: ”Si te gusto Ex Machina, esa miniserie te va a encantar”. Pues no se equivocó, la serie me pareció exquisita.
Previamente también ya he visto la película Aniquilación (original de Netflix), que es otra obra bastante buena (no tanto como las otras dos a mi parecer) de ciencia ficción dirigida por Garland, lo que me lleva a calificarlo como uno de los talentos más destacados del género en la actualidad. La serie es original del canal Fx y la plataforma de streaming Hulu, ha sido transmitida en Latinoamérica por Fox Premium (ahora Star Premium) y por HBO en España, obteniendo muy buenas críticas, muestra de ello son sus 81% de reseñas positivas y 77% de aprobación de la audiencia en el sitio web Rotten Tomatoes.
Recently the colleague @jcrodriguez, who is a very knowledgeable cinephile, recommended the television miniseries called "Devs" to me, he did so in a comment that he left me in my review about the movie Ex-Machine. The suggestion was motivated because, like the aforementioned feature film, the series is also directed by the British filmmaker Alex Garland, in addition the tone and narrative character of both productions are similar, since they are stories that involve very advanced technologies, but at the same time quite realistic, they are also dramatic stories with hints of suspense. In that comment he told me: "If you liked Ex Machina, you are going to love that miniseries." Well, he was not wrong, the series seemed exquisite to me.
I have also previously seen the film Annihilation (Netflix original), which is another pretty good work (not as good as the other two in my opinion) of science fiction directed by Garland, which leads me to qualify him as one of the most talented featured in the genre today. The series is original from the Fx channel and the Hulu streaming platform, it has been broadcast in Latin America by Fox Premium (now Star Premium) and by HBO in Spain, obtaining very good reviews, an example of this is its 81% positive reviews and 77 Audience approval% on Rotten Tomatoes website.

Su argumento gira en torno a las situaciones que debe enfrentar Lily, una joven informática de origen asiático que trabaja para una empresa estadounidense de tecnología muy avanzada que lleva por nombre Amaya, mientras intenta dilucidar la desaparición de su novio, un programador ruso llamado Sergei, que precisamente acababa de ser elegido por Forest, el CEO de la compañía, para incorporarse a un proyecto ultra secreto al que se le conoce con el nombre clave de Devs. Aunque la empresa le ha proporcionado una versión oficial de lo sucedido, ella desconfía y decide investigar por cuenta propia.
Synopsis
Their argument revolves around the situations that Lily, a young Asian computer scientist who works for an American company with very advanced technology called Amaya, must face while trying to elucidate the disappearance of her boyfriend, a Russian programmer named Sergei, that he had just been chosen by Forest, the CEO of the company, to join a top secret project that is known by the code name of Devs. Although the company has provided her with an official version of what happened, she is suspicious and decides to investigate on her own.

Inicialmente Sergei y su equipo de trabajo le muestran a Forest y a Katie (una empleada de alto rango en la empresa), el logro que han obtenido en el desarrollo de un sistema que es capaz de predecir el comportamiento de un ser vivo. A consecuencia de ello, Sergei es asignado a formar parte del proyecto Devs y el día siguiente es llevado a un laboratorio que flota en el vacío mediante electromagnetismo, aunque no se le suministran demasiados detalles sobre la labor que desempeñara allí.
Cuando el ruso observa el código fuente en el que debe trabajar, queda sorprendido y afirma que eso lo cambia todo, así que utiliza un dispositivo de almacenamiento oculto en su reloj de pulsera, para extraer sin autorización el código. Luego al salir de allí en horas de la noche, es confrontado por Forest, debido a que robo información industrial confidencial, que pese a decir que lo perdona, permite que Kenton su jefe de seguridad, lo asfixie con una bolsa plástica.
Como Sergei no regreso a casa esa noche, Lily informa a la empresa de su desaparición, pero le muestran imágenes de él saliendo de las instalaciones por sus propios medios. Ella no se conforma con ello y escudriña el teléfono celular de su novio que ella tiene consigo, ya que él no podía llevarlo al laboratorio de Devs por la confidencialidad del lugar. Entonces ella encuentra en el móvil un programa de Sudoku que le parece sospechoso por estar protegido con clave, al no poseer la clave de acceso, debe recurrir a un hacker llamado Jamie que fue su pareja antes que Sergei, para que la ayude a desbloquear el programa, pero este se niega.

Initially Sergei and his work team show Forest and Katie (a high-ranking employee in the company), the achievement they have obtained in the development of a system that is capable of predicting the behavior of a living being. When the Russian looks at the source code that he must work on, he is surprised and claims that it changes everything, so he uses a hidden storage device in his wristwatch to extract the code without authorization. Then when leaving there at night, he is confronted by Forest, because he stole confidential industrial information, which despite saying that he forgives him, allows Kenton, his head of security, to suffocate him with a plastic bag.
Since Sergei did not return home that night, Lily informs the company of his disappearance, but they show her images of him leaving the premises under his own power. She is not satisfied with it and scrutinizes the cell phone of her boyfriend that she has with her, since he could not take it to Devs' laboratory due to the confidentiality of the place. Then she finds a Sudoku program on her mobile that seems suspicious because it is protected with a password, since she does not have the access code, she must turn to a hacker named Jamie who was her partner before Sergei, to help her unlock the password. program, but it refuses.
El día siguiente Lily es convocada a la empresa urgentemente y allí le muestran imágenes de supuestas grabaciones de video en las que se observa a Sergei volviendo a las instalaciones de la compañía y prendiéndose fuego a sí mismo. No voy a destripar la serie por entero, pero les diré que el proyecto Devs tiene como objetivo realizar una simulación exacta de todo lo ocurrido en el universo, incluyendo el pasado, el presente y el futuro, ya que cuenta con una computadora cuántica con tal capacidad de procesamiento, que es capaz previo suministro de los datos correspondientes, de calcular todo lo ocurrido durante la historia de todo el universo, permitiéndole a quienes la manipulan, que puedan observar con precisión hechos ocurridos miles de años en el pasado, como la crucifixión de cristo, así como acontecimientos que aún no han sucedido.
Algo que al menos para mí pronto comenzó a hacerse obvio, fue que la intensión de Forest con el proyecto era devolver a la vida a su hija Amaya, que en el segundo episodio se nos cuenta que murió, pero que debido a la gran estatua de una niña que se encuentra en el complejo industrial, se intuye que ella es alguien que este magnate quizá mucho y que seguramente debía haber perdido, así que su obsesión seria recuperarla y en efecto, Devs es un intento de su parte por volver a estar junto a ella.
The next day Lily is summoned to the company urgently and there they show her images of alleged video recordings in which Sergei is seen returning to the company's facilities and setting himself on fire. Thus ends the first episode, leaving the table served with a few questions that are gradually revealed in the following chapters. Soon Lily enlists the help of her ex-boyfriend to decipher the false Sudoku code, discovering that this application was for instant messaging and that Sergei was engaged in industrial espionage.
I am not going to gut the entire series, but I will tell you that the Devs project aims to carry out an exact simulation of everything that happened in the universe, including the past, the present and the future, since it has a quantum computer with such processing capacity, which is capable of calculating everything that happened during the history of the entire universe, which is capable of calculating everything that happened during the history of the entire universe, allowing those who manipulate it to accurately observe events that occurred thousands of years in the past, such as the crucifixion of Christ, as well as events that have not yet happened.
Something that at least for me soon began to become obvious, was that Forest's intention with the project was to bring back to life his daughter Amaya, who in the second episode we are told that she died, but due to the large statue of A girl who is in the industrial complex, it is intuited that she is someone that this tycoon perhaps a lot and that surely she should have lost, so her obsession would be to recover her and in effect, Devs is an attempt on her part to get back together to her.
Conclusiones
La serie no es demasiado intrincada, aunque sí que tiene giros muy interesantes, tiene un ritmo algo pausado y un tono minimalista que quizá pueda aburrir a algunos, pero para quienes nos gustan las historias con base en teorías científicas que pudieran llegar a convertirse en realidad y los relatos que presentan intriga y profundos planteamientos filosóficos, esta miniserie puede resultar en una completa joya de la ciencia ficción más exquisita.
Para finalizar, no creo que se realice una segunda temporada ya que aparentemente el relato se pensó para concluir en solo estos ocho episodios y la historia quedo bien cerrada, aunque dado el éxito alcanzado y que no sería muy complicado expandirla, pues la premisa da para mucho más, tampoco sería imposible una continuación.
Conclusions
The series is not too intricate, although it does have very interesting twists, it has a somewhat slow pace and a minimalist tone that may perhaps bore some, but for those of us who like stories based on scientific theories that could become reality and stories that feature intrigue and deep philosophical insights, this miniseries may turn out to be a complete gem of the most exquisite science fiction.
To finish, I do not think that a second season will be made since apparently the story was thought to conclude in only these eight episodes and the story was well closed, although given the success achieved and that it would not be very difficult to expand it, since the premise gives for much more, a continuation would not be impossible either.
