En esta oportunidad voy a hablar sobre una serie estadounidense de ciencia ficción original de Netflix, que adapta la novela homónima del escritor británico Richard K. Morgan, cuyo título en español fue traducido como “Carbono Modificado” e hizo merecedor a su autor del premio Philip K. Dick al mejor libro en 2003, lo cual le concede a la calidad de esta historia una base muy importante. Sin embargo, debo mencionar de antemano, que la serie fue cancelada luego de sus dos primeras temporadas, sin que llegara a una conclusión definitiva de su narración, aunque el final en ambos casos podría decirse que es semiabierto o semicerrado. La primera temporada se estrenó en 2018 y la segunda en 2020, pero la tercera no se concretó, lo cual indica que los niveles de audiencia no alcanzaron las metas establecidas por la empresa para justificar su continuación. ¿Tomando en cuenta que fue cancelada merece la pena verla? En este post te describiré mis puntos de vista al respecto y así podrás hacerte una idea propia sobre si debes o no darle una oportunidad a esta serie.
Primeramente, déjame decirte que el hecho de que un producto de entretenimiento haya sido descontinuado por sus creadores, según mi opinión, no quiere decir necesariamente que sea malo o que no pueda ser del gusto de una buena porción del público, de modo que ese no debería ser el criterio único que utilicemos para tomar la decisión de ver o no cualquier producción televisiva. Yo particularmente recuerdo una serie, que fue cancelada por la cadena ABC tras su primera temporada y que a mí me gustaba mucho, estoy hablando de FlashForward, que está basada en el libro de 1999 titulado en castellano como “Flashforward. Recuerdos del futuro” de Robert J. Sawyer.

First, let me tell you that the fact that an entertainment product has been discontinued by its creators, in my opinion, does not necessarily mean that it is bad or that it cannot be liked by a good portion of the public, so that it is not it should be the sole criterion we use to make the decision to watch or not watch any television production. I particularly remember a series that was canceled by ABC after its first season and that I liked a lot. I'm talking about FlashForward, which is based on the 1999 book titled “Flashforward. Ambientación
Volviendo con la serie Altered Carbon, su premisa es, creo yo, muy interesante para cualquier aficionado a la ciencia ficción y en especial el subgénero ciberpunk, ya que se trata de un futuro (de aproximadamente unos 360 años a partir de la época actual) en el que la humanidad se ha expandido por el espacio, poblando a la vez múltiples planetas y la tecnología ha avanzado al punto de conseguir que la conciencia de los seres humanos pueda ser almacenada en un dispositivo al que se le denomina Pila, el cual se inserta quirúrgicamente en la parte trasera del cuello de los ciudadanos, de modo que al morir sus cuerpos físicos, a los que se les llama Fundas, simplemente se traslada esa Pila a una nueva Funda y el individuo continua existiendo con su misma identidad y todos sus recuerdos, solo que en otro cuerpo distinto del que les correspondía naturalmente.
Esto provoca una sucesión de conflictos filosóficos que son el gran fuerte de la serie, ya que nos plantea una sociedad en la que los ciudadanos con mayor poder económico se han vuelto virtualmente inmortales, pues poseen sistemas de almacenamiento de datos, que les permiten respaldar su mente de forma periódica, de modo que si su Pila es destruida por cualquier causa accidental o deliberada, solo necesitan utilizar una Pila vacía y restaurar en ella el ultimo respaldo realizado a su configuración o estado psico-neural. Por otro lado, los ciudadanos más pobres, quienes no cuentan con los recursos necesarios para adquirir una funda a la cual migrar sus conciencias, muchas veces deben ocupar cuerpos que no corresponden con su género o su edad, otras veces deben mantenerse en reposo a modo de sueño o viviendo en un mundo virtual, esperando por un organismo en el que puedan ser refundados o morir definitivamente al prescindir de un ente material en el que alojar su ser para continuar existiendo.
Setting

Hay dos elementos que no son tan esenciales dentro de la trama como para integrar una sinopsis, pero que tienen una significación importante y por ello me gustaría menciónalos en este artículo. En primer lugar, me refiero a la presencia de inteligencias artificiales muy desarrolladas, que prestan servicios a los seres humanos y que están muy asociadas a espacios específicos, como es el caso del Hotel “El Cuervo”, cuyo regente es una proyección holográfica de uno de estos software que se hace llamar Poe.
En segundo lugar, esta algo que me resulto muy impactante, me refiero a la existencia de una realidad virtual estilo Matrix a la cual se conectan las Pilas sin necesidad de estar insertadas en un cuerpo físico, de tal forma que las conciencias de las personas pueden dentro de esa simulación, experimentar sensaciones tal como si estuvieran en el mundo real. Lo impactante no es eso, sino que existen instituciones en las cuales se utiliza ese espacio simulado para realizar torturas virtuales de toda índole imaginable a personas, con por ejemplo el propósito de extraerles información. El grado de las torturas es absolutamente extremo y lo peor de ello es que si el individuo muere, al tratarse de una simulación, simplemente se le vuelve a restaurar la vida y se continua con su odisea, pudiendo hacer eso indefinidamente, de modo que ni la muerte es una escapatoria a tal sufrimiento.

Motivos de su cancelación
La serie incorpora elementos que también se encuentran presentes en obras como Blade Runner, Matrix, Ghost in the Shell e incluso Doctor Who, como ya lo mencioné antes, esto la hace estar bastante cargada de conceptos y cuestionamientos morales y filosóficos, como por ejemplo: ¿Qué es una persona? ¿El respaldo electrónico de la configuración o código psico-neural de una persona es un ser humano en sí mismo? ¿Es posible enamorarse de una personalidad mental sin importar que cuerpo este habitando en determinado momento? ¿La inmortalidad es realmente algo deseable? ¿Cuál es en verdad el sentido de una vida que nunca termina? entre otros. Tal concentración de concepciones ontológicas es común que no sea del gusto del público en general, es decir que su target de audiencia es limitado, eso hace que para un producto como este sea más difícil alcanzar una alta popularidad que para otras producciones con una ambientación más simple.
Aunado a lo anterior, la estética de una serie en la que se observan tecnologías avanzadas y ciudades futuristas, aun cuando no haga uso masivo de efectos especiales, requiere de un presupuesto elevado que comprime los márgenes de ganancia para sus creadores, aumentando el riesgo de pérdidas económicas en caso de fracasar en la captación del público objetivo. Si a eso le agregamos que la historia perfectamente habría podido darse por concluida con el final de la primera temporada y que la segunda aparentemente en busca de volverse más comercial, cambia bastante el tono que caracterizo a la primera, termina siendo muy comprensible que fuera cancelada.
En la segunda temporada la serie se desdibuja al punto de perder su propia identidad, ya que prescinde del erotismo mostrado antes, se traslada el peso narrativo a las escenas de acción, se descuida la relevancia filosófica y me parece que, aunque tanto la trama principal como las secundarias son bastante interesantes y tienen mucho potencial para desarrollar, fueron ejecutadas de forma incorrecta, por lo que perdieron gran parte de su atractivo. Cabe mencionar que el cambio de actor para la interpretación del protagonista, aunque está perfectamente justificado, afecta negativamente ya que se percibe una diferencia muy grande entre una y otra versión del personaje, aunque Anthony Mackie es un buen actor, pero el papel le va como anillo al dedo a Joel Kinnaman, por lo que reemplazarlo es difícil.
Por otro lado, no contar con el toque fresco que le imprimía el rol de Kristin Ortega interpretado por la actriz mexicana Martha Higareda, el personaje es una inspectora de policía cuya etnia es latina, que en la primera temporada fue coprotagonista y tuvo una relación muy estrecha e íntima con Takeshi. Su carácter y en especial su dialecto lleno de palabrotas mexicanas (quizá algo ilógico al tratarse de más de tres siglos en el futuro), le daban un estilo que al menos para mí resulto muy simpático. Eso sin mencionar los desnudos que protagonizo y que seguramente quedaron gravados en la memoria de muchos espectadores.

If to that we add that the story could perfectly have been concluded with the end of the first season and that the second, apparently in search of becoming more commercial, changes the tone that characterized the first a lot, it ends up being very understandable that it was canceled. .
In the second season the series is blurred to the point of losing its own identity, since it dispenses with the eroticism shown before, the narrative weight is transferred to the action scenes, the philosophical relevance is neglected and it seems to me that, although both the main plot as the secondary ones are quite interesting and have a lot of potential to develop, they were executed incorrectly, thus losing much of their appeal. It is worth mentioning that the change of actor for the interpretation of the protagonist, although it is perfectly justified, affects negatively since a very large difference is perceived between one version of the character and another, although Anthony Mackie is a good actor, but the role suits him as ring to the finger to Joel Kinnaman, so replacing it is difficult.
On the other hand, not having the fresh touch of the role of Kristin Ortega played by the Mexican actress Martha Higareda, the character is a police inspector whose ethnicity is Latino, who in the first season was a co-star and had a very close relationship. close and intimate with Takeshi. Her character and especially her dialect full of Mexican expletives (perhaps something illogical since it is more than three centuries in the future), gave her a style that at least for me was very nice. ¿Sería recomendable verla?
Mi opinión personal es que si vale la pena ver esta serie, en especial la primera temporada. Quizá no se trate de una obra maestra, tiene sus problemas, creo que uno de los más importantes es que en la primera temporada, pese a que la estética de su fotografía es muy buena, las actuaciones son correctas y la trama es interesante, los primeros capítulos no atrapan al público como deberían, yo no tome real gusto por ella como hasta el cuarto episodio y eso es un gran problema para cualquier serie, pues mucha audiencia se marchara antes de haber conectado con la historia. Otro punto no tan bueno, son las motivaciones del personaje que termina siendo el principal antagonista, creo que es una posesión bastante loca la que presenta y el final es algo flojo.
Sin embargo, la primera temporada es bastante buena en términos generales, ya la segunda es un poco más complicado dar una respuesta concreta, yo me inclino hacia la idea de que es bueno verla para sacar conclusiones propias, pero realmente me parece que se queda narrativamente bastante por debajo de la primera.
