Hello, cinephiles, I hope you are doing well. This time I want to share with you a film that, at first, I didn't like very much because I didn't understand it and I had to watch it twice more to be able to understand it (a little) and, thus, to get to like it. It is Mr. Nobody (or, in Latin, The Possible Lives of Mr. Nobody), directed and written by Jaco van Dormael, who personally, I do not know the work of this gentleman, but he took a gamble with this production; it also has the starring role of Jared Leto as Nemo Nobody, who although he has not been known as a good actor, this time he adapted very well to the job. This science fiction film -in the best Butterfly Effect style (but more complex)- manages to mix so many things that at the beginning, it manages to leave us crazy or, at least, overwhelmed with so much information that we do not know and the entanglement in the whole development, but in the end it is that same entanglement what makes it easy to understand.
Hola, cinéfilos, espero se encuentren muy bien. En esta oportunidad les quiero compartir un film que, a primeras, no me gustó mucho porque no la entendí y tuve que verla dos veces más para poderla entender (un poco) y así, lograr llegar a gustarme. Se trata de Mr. Nobody (o, en latino, Las Vidas Posibles del Sr. Nobody), dirigida y escrita por Jaco van Dormael, que en lo personal, no conozco el trabajo de este señor, pero se la jugó con esta producción; también cuenta con la participación protagónica de Jared Leto encarnando a Nemo Nobody, que si bien no ha tenido fama de buen actor, en esta ocasión se adaptó muy bien al trabajo. Este film de ciencia ficción -al mejor estilo de Efecto Mariposa (pero más complejo)- logra mezclar tantas cosas que al principio, logra dejarnos locos o, por lo menos, abrumados de tanta información que desconocemos y el enredo en todo el desarrollo, pero al final es ese mismo enredo lo que lo vuelve sencillo de entender.
They forgot to make you forget.
Imagine that "before you are born", you know everything about your life and a little more. That is the reality of a child who tells us that before life, we all come from the same place and that when "we are going to be born", some beings called "Angels of Forgetting" come and make us forget everything so that we go with a pure mind to earth. Only that these angels "forgot" to make this child forget. Nemo already knows who his parents will be, and even describes how they met and the moment they decided to have him as their son.
Olvidaron hacerle olvidar.
Imagínate que “antes de nacer”, lo sabes todo referente a tu vida y un poco más. Esa es la realidad de un niño que nos cuenta que antes de la vida, todos venimos de un mismo lugar y que cuando “vamos a nacer”, vienen unos seres que son llamados “Ángeles del Olvido” y nos hacen olvidarlo todo para que vayamos con la mente pura a la tierra. Solo que a estos ángeles se les “olvidó” hacer olvidar a este niño. Nemo ya sabe quiénes serán sus padres, he incluso describe cómo se conocieron y el momento en que decidieron tenerlo como hijo.
Random Decisions.
The story clearly shows us that every action taken will have a reaction, like everything else, but Nemo, knowing what will happen to any decision he makes, thinks of leaving everything to chance for a coin; although he knows what will happen, he will not have the weight of having made the decision. This does not last him many years because in the end he dies in this timeline.
Decisiones al azar.
La historia claramente nos muestra que cada acción tomada tendrá una reacción, como todo, pero Nemo al saber qué le sucederá ante cualquier decisión que tome, piensa en dejarlo todo al azar por una moneda; si bien sabe qué sucederá, no tendrá el peso de haber tomado la decisión. Esto no le dura muchos años porque al final muere en esta línea de tiempo.
Which way to choose?
It is when Nemo turns 9 that the hardest thing in his life happens and he seriously doesn't know what to do. His parents (under any circumstances) separate and he is forced to choose who he will live with. Whichever one he chooses, not only will he have a life, but he will create mini universes of his own story with different outcomes, although, strangely enough, with the same ending. In addition to these decisions he will have to make, there is a series of events that trigger the decisions he did not make but which occurred (once again, the butterfly effect doing its thing).
¿Qué camino tomar?
Es cuando Nemo cumple 9 años que sucede lo más difícil de su vida y en serio no sabe qué hacer. Sus padres (bajo cualquier circunstancia) se separan y lo ponen a escoger con quién se quedará a vivir. Ante cualquiera que tome, no solo tendrá una vida, sino que creará mini universos de su propia historia con desenlaces distintos aunque, extrañamente con un mismo final. A demás de estas decisiones que tendrá que tomar, se le suma una serie de sucesos que desencadenan las decisiones que no tomó pero ocurrieron (una vez más, el efecto mariposa haciendo de las suyas).
A, B or C?: Love.
We also see the other part of the movie, and that is that it has some romance. Just like everything else in his life Nemo, he must choose which of the three girls he is introduced to in his childhood he will have a life with, and sometimes he leaves it to the flip of a coin. While it's clear who it is he really wants to be with, it doesn't come easy for him in any of the timelines Nemo lives in (though he does manage to match up with her in the end).
¿A, B o C?: El amor.
También vemos la otra parte de la película, y es que tiene algo de romance. Igual que todo en su vida Nemo, debe elegir con cuál de las tres niñas que se presentan en su infancia tendrá una vida y, en algunas ocasiones, lo deja a la suerte de la moneda. Aunque está claro con quién es en realidad que quiere estar, no se le presenta fácil en ninguna de las líneas temporales que vive Nemo (aunque sí logra coincidir con ella al final).
Back to the future.
As I tell you all that, Nemo himself is telling it to a reporter from the future, and yes, he too is so surprised and unwilling to believe anything he's hearing. Is Nemo crazy with age and making all that up? Which of all those lives is real? Is it even possible? Those are some of the questions the reporter asks and the truth is that the answers are even more complex. Nemo is old, sometimes he tends to mix up his stories a bit and that's why he is also seen by a psychiatrist because he doesn't believe that he has lived all those things he tells about either, let alone in so many timelines. At this point in the future, where so many theories of traditional physics and quantum physics are mixed that it is really difficult to follow the thread, it has many scenes and dialogues full of these scientific terms that catches totally unprepared those who are ignorant about these issues.
Volver al futuro.
Mientras les cuento todo eso, el mismo Nemo se lo está contando a un reportero del futuro, y sí, él también está tan sorprendido y sin ganas de creer nada de lo que está escuchando. ¿Está Nemo loco por la edad e inventa todo eso? ¿Cuál de todas esas vidas es real? ¿Es tan siquiera posible? Esas son algunas de las preguntas que hace el reportero y la verdad es que las respuestas son aún más complejas. Nemo está viejo, a veces tiende a mezclar un poco sus historias y es por eso que también lo ve un psiquiatra porque tampoco cree que él haya vivido todas esas cosas que cuenta y menos en tantas líneas de tiempo. En este punto del futuro, donde se mezclan tantas teorías de la física tradicional y la cuántica que de verdad es difícil seguir el hilo, tiene muchas escenas y diálogos llenos de estos términos científicos que agarra totalmente desprevenido a quienes ignoren sobre estos temas.
We only exist in the mind of a child.
Those are some of the words that Nemo says to the reporter and at that moment he can't stop laughing. And it happens just as he explains, everything that is happening may be the imagination of a child who knows what is about to happen and has not happened yet, so hypothetically they are not alive and nothing they know has happened; neither can he say what is real and what is not in everything he has told because if you think, it is possible, and if it is possible, it will happen at some point, in some of your dimensions.
Solo existimos en la mente de un niño.
Esas son unas de las palabras que Nemo dice al reportero y en ese momento no para de reír. Y es que sucede tal y como él explica, todo lo que está pasando puede que sea la imaginación de un niño que sabe qué está por pasar y aún no ha ocurrido, así que hipotéticamente no están vivos y nada de lo que conocen ha pasado; tampoco puede decir qué es real y qué no en todo lo que ha contado porque si se piensa, es posible, y si es posible, ocurrirá en algún momento, en alguna de tus dimensiones.
Certainly, all this is difficult to understand, I told you, and that is why I loved this movie. Do you have to see it more than once and have a notion about physics? Yes, very important because otherwise it will remain a simple science fiction movie that nobody understood. And maybe that's what happened with this film, and it's true that the idea of a somewhat independent production showing Jared Leto doing science fiction and some romance doesn't hook at all, but this is a hit for those of us who like these twists; and it's not that I'm a big fan of this genre but it deserves its little gold star. Ah! By the way, although at this point it's kind of silly to say it, but I must also add that this film is not linear at all, everything can be delayed and advanced as the director felt like it. So, guys, as I always tell you: "If you haven't seen it, see it (several times), and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".
Ciertamente, todo esto es difícil de entender, se los dije, y es por eso que me encantó esta película. ¿Hay que verla más de una vez y tener noción sobre física? Sí, muy importante porque si no quedará como una simple película de ciencia ficción que no gustó porque nadie la entendió. Y quizás eso fue lo que ocurrió con este film, y es verdad que no engancha para nada la idea de una producción un tanto independiente mostrando a Jared Leto haciendo ciencia ficción y algo de romance, pero esta sí es un acierto para quienes nos gustan estos giros; y no es que yo sea muy fan de este género pero sí se merece su estrellita dorada. ¡Ah! Por cierto, aunque a este punto es algo tonto acotarlo, pero también debo añadir que este fil no es para nada lineal, todo puede atrasarse y adelantarse como se le vino en gana al director. Así que, muchachones, como siempre les digo: “Si no la han visto, véanla (varias veces), y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
