Películas de terror basadas en la fe de una comunidad alejada del mundo, con sus propias creencias y leyes, siempre hay algo que fascina en este tipo de historias, puede ser por un choque de cultura o porque alguien es víctima de sus propias creencias, lo mejor es que siempre habrá la forma de contar una misma historia de forma diferente, como dije diferentes características, pero con una misma base; personalmente me gusta este tipo de historias, las creencias que pueden tener ciertas zonas desconocidas por otros siempre es algo fascinante y a la vez peligroso, creo que es algo que se pone a prueba sobre nuestras propias creencias y justamente eso es lo que trata este film estrenado hace cinco años.

"The Witch" nos relata una historia situada en New England de 1630, una familia inglesa ha sido expulsada de una comunidad purista después de tener una disputa por temas religiosos, el padre de la familia, William junto a su esposa Katherine y 5 hijos toman está oportunidad para comenzar de nuevo en una zona alejada cerca de un bosque, está nueva experiencia la toman como una nueva prueba impuesta por Dios y gracias a su creencia sienten que están preparados para todo lo que deben enfrentar, pero nadie, ni por más fuertes que sea tu conocimiento de la palabra de Dios los preparará para enfrentar un poder oscuro que habita en el bosque.

Este film lo vi por primera vez un año después de su estreno, creo que fue una de las primeras producciones pertenecientes a A24, no sabía mucho de la historia, ni sus actores, pero al leer muchas opiniones positivas sabía que en algún momento debería verla, para mí ha sido uno de los films de terror mejor escrito, el estar basado en historias antiguas sobre brujería, leyendas, historias folklóricas me parece que es algo muy relevante porque creo que se asemeja alas historias que he escuchado en diferentes zonas que he viajado en mi país, esto es lo que más me ha gustado al ver esta película. Robert Eggers hizo su debut como director con esta película, su trabajo en la cámara es muy importante, enfoca tanto lo rural de la forma que viven estas personas las cuales decidieron dejar su lugar de origen para aventurarse en un nuevo mundo, la época y la zona donde se desarrolla la historia es fundamental, ayuda a crear imágenes lúgubres, grises, nada esperanzadora, llena de tristeza y hasta puedo decir miseria, no es para nada esperanzador; las tomas son buenas enfocadas en sus actores con sus expresiones de desespero por todo lo que están viviendo, lo otro que destacó es la no sobreexplotación de escenas de miedo, su tercer y final acto es en sí todo un cúmulo de terror y desesperación, creo que dejar todo eso al final fue una buena decisión.
El guion fue escrito por el mismo Eggers, está historia basada en cuentos folklóricos es lo que más me ha gustado, al ver cada escena en dónde la bruja busca manifestarse a la familia, sentí como si escuchará a mi abuela o hasta mi propia madre relatar historias que habían escuchado cuando eran niñas, historias de miedo tal como lo es esta película; me gustó cómo es usada la fe en la religión, yo lo capto como una línea muy fina en dónde el fanatismo puede ser el primer paso para ser víctima de las creencias contrarias a lo que originalmente cree está familia, lo otro es las ganas de mostrar que todos nacemos pecadores y eso nos hace a la vez impuros y posibles víctimas de nuevos pecados, eso hace que cada uno de los integrantes de esta familia sean víctimas del poder de la bruja, por todo eso creo que el guion lo destacó como lo mejor del film.
I saw this film for the first time a year after its release, I think it was one of the first productions belonging to A24, I did not know much about the story, nor its actors, but reading many positive opinions I knew that at some point I should see it, for me it has been one of the best written horror films, being based on ancient stories about witchcraft, legends, folkloric stories seems to me that it is something very relevant because I think it resembles the stories I have heard in different areas I have traveled in my country, this is what I liked most when watching this film. Robert Eggers made his directorial debut with this film, his camera work is very important, he focuses so much on the rural way of life of these people who decided to leave their place of origin to venture into a new world, the time and the area where the story takes place is fundamental, it helps to create dreary images, gray, not hopeful, full of sadness and I can even say misery, it is not hopeful at all; the shots are good focused on its actors with their expressions of despair for everything they are living, the other thing that stood out is the not overexploitation of scary scenes, its third and final act is in itself all an accumulation of terror and despair, I think leaving all that at the end was a good decision.
The script was written by Eggers himself, this story based on folk tales is what I liked the most, watching every scene where the witch seeks to manifest herself to the family, I felt as if I would listen to my grandmother or even my own mother telling stories they had heard when they were children, scary stories just like this movie is; I liked how faith in religion is used, I see it as a very fine line where fanaticism can be the first step to become a victim of beliefs contrary to what this family originally believes, the other is the desire to show that we are all born sinners and that makes us both impure and possible victims of new sins, that makes each of the members of this family are victims of the power of the witch, for all that I think the script highlighted it as the best of the film.
Las actuaciones son muy importantes en esta historia, eso porque cada actor desde el más experimentado hasta el más joven tiene un importante momento en el film sin importar que tan simple sea, comenzaré hablando sobre Anya Taylor-Joy como "Thomasin", este fue su primer papel protagónico en un largometraje, su trabajo es el mejor, desde su inocencia, hasta el momento de demostrar curiosidad para tener una mejor vida o recuperar la que tuve antes de llegar a América, yo la veo como una víctima, como dije alguien inocente e ingenuo, todo gracias a las creencias y fallas de sus padres, con esto también me puedo referir a Harvey Scrimshaw como "Caleb", este joven actor para mí hizo un gran trabajo, tal vez algo tosca, pero creo que lo hace con mucha naturalidad, debo decir que su escena principal es una de las mejores del film, la primera vez me dio miedo porque crees que se está refiriendo a algo sobre su creencia, pero en realidad ha aceptado una nueva, eso me gustó mucho, no puedo dejar por fuera a Ralph Ineson y Kate Dickie como "William" y "Katherine", ambos que muestran una imagen perfecta desde la fe, pero fallan porque sin importar que tanto puedan rezar, siguen siendo pecadores por sus actos, por lo que sienten y piensan, en ellos cae un peso adecuado del film que ayuda mucho en el desarrollo del film..

Está película enfocada en la vida de una joven chica siendo parte de una vida marcada por la religión, viviendo bajo una presión constante para hacer el bien, un bien que puede cambiar de definición mientras tanto uses la palabra de Dios para justificar tus actos, creo que alguien joven siendo víctimas de pecados de sus padres podrán sentir que son parte de un problema del cual no tienen culpa, se les inculca una idea que podrá marcar sus vidas y afectar los actos y decisiones que tomen en un futuro, esto los hará víctimas de otros que les muestre que pueden hacer cuando son libres, porque justamente de eso trata en parte está historia, un pacto para liberarse de ataduras hechas desde la religión, una que fue usada para engañar y beneficiar a otros, creo que aquí está la historia de terror, una verdadera contadas desde el punto de vista de una pobre familia que vive una tragedia gracias a una maldición; si por casualidad no han visto esta película se las recomiendo, es muy buena historia, con buen director y buenos actores.
