Snake Eyes - Film Review [ESP/ENG]

Revenge and dishonor will be the true test for a future hero.... "Snake Eyes"

In the 1980s the first all-American animated series that I became a fan of was "G.I. Joe". Joe", it was a story I liked watching because it had continuity and wasn't so repetitive with others, but I especially liked it because it had two of my favorite characters, one was "Storm Shadow" a ninja dressed in white, which respected the ninja way, I remember that at the beginning it was hard for me to understand that this character was a ninja because he used a gun and had a series of grenades, but the other thing was that he didn't speak and for a long time I thought he was mute; one bad and the other good, I liked so much to see them that later I only saw episodes in which they appeared and were complete protagonists, for me they were the best because they had a great rivalry and over the years and after two films were released based on this series of action figures, comics and animated series, these two good characters have not been well represented on the big screen, but with the release of this new film it seems that there is a chance to do something good, that's why despite the bad reviews received about this film I decided to watch it and give my opinion about this story of origins of both characters.

Unfortunately this film is regular to bad, just like the two previous films (which has nothing to do with this one), one of the main culprits of this happening is the German director Robert Schwentke, of which I have seen only one of his works as a director and that is "R.I.P.D." (2013), the failure of this director is to not make fight scenes that are fun and surprising, despite that I think it was good that the first or the first fight is rough, uncoordinated, crude and then we see something more aesthetic, fine and of course better choreography in sword fights, but of the several that there are is his final act, only one can get my attention, but it is not at all surprising; I don't understand why these directors can't take from influence some anime and maga scenes based on ninjas to be able to create good action scenes, I don't know why they don't choose someone who has had some contact with fight scenes and give him the opportunity to do something better, the direction is one of the worst things about this movie.

The script is also not the best thing about this story, this was written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, the first is of the three screenwriters is known for a long career in working on Disney animated projects and writing the script for different movies which I didn't like such as Hercules (2014) and The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016) and has the story credit for the reboot of Charlie's Angels (2019), one of the worst movies I've seen; to that unfortunate list we can add Snake Eyes because I think they didn't make a good origin story to a character that is one of the great protagonists in the whole universe of G. I. Joe, I know that in his original story the secret of knowing who he is prevails in this character and that in this movie there is a great opportunity to make a complete new beginning for everything, but what was done is not adequate, it is incongruent, without logic and boring; the focus on the hatred of a child to turn him into a fighting machine and then be part of a martial arts clan by magic must be the worst of the whole script, I did not like anything, I did not like the introduction of COBRA nor the introduction of G. I. Joe, I think it could have been done better. I. Joe, I think it could have been done better, but there is something worse and that is the use of the supernatural, something very forced and that does not fit in everything that is seen in more than an hour of the movie.

I would like to speak very well of the performances, but it was not something I liked either, here I think there is another big failure of the script and direction, I think the actors Henry Golding and Andrew Koji should have had a large number of scenes together to reinforce the story of brothers where betrayal will break the bonds they have created, these scenes we see very little and are very poorly acted, but the worst are their action scenes, here he blamed the director and production because they did not have good shots and much less choreographers to make good fights, instead they lost everything by creating a character like Akiko played by Haruka Abe who took more importance than Tommy himself, as you see both production, direction and script affected the performance in the performance of many actors who worked on this project.

I think many people had expectations with this film, I was one of those people, but when I saw the first trailer I thought that we would see again another bad film based on this group of heroes, but with less budget than the other two films and annoying because despite being a smaller film in production cost, I think that by focusing everything in the world of discipline, honor and martial arts regarding the ninjas, surely it would have been better, something about tradition and belonging to a new world, I think that by focusing everything on the world of discipline, honor and martial arts with respect to the ninjas, it would surely have been better, something about tradition and belonging to a new world, one thing that I always think has reflected Snake Eyes as a character which I consider him as a "Ninja Commando" who benefits from both worlds, in his training as a Ninja and Military, something out of everything I had seen about these Japanese warriors, all that was forgotten to make a very poorly directed, written and produced film and I do not think that's the worst because again Paramount must make changes to relaunch again this franchise which is not tired of falling into very bad hands, that's why I think it is very difficult that we can see a sequel or maybe focus on the whole group of heroes and villains forgetting a while to such an important character giving protagonism to others.
