La fe de un pequeño poblado de una isla será puesta en prueba al aparecer eventos inexplicables... "Midnight Mass"
Mike Flanagan, el trabajo de este director y guionista lo conocí gracias a sus proyectos para Netflix, miniseries como "The Haunting of Hill House" (2018) y "The Haunting of Bly Manor" (2020), también he visto su última producción cinematográfica, "Doctor Sleep" (2019) secuela de "The Shining"; estos tres trabajos de Flanagan me han parecido excelente, son una forma extraordinaria de contar una historia de terror en dónde otros temas como dramas familiares, el amor, la culpa, redención o la fe tiene mucho peso y hasta puedo decir que justamente el terror es un complemento y no el principal protagonista de la historia, aunque por supuesto tiene un buen peso, ya que puede ser lo que atrae a un gran número de personas.

Mike Flanagan, the work of this director and screenwriter I knew thanks to his projects for Netflix, miniseries like "The Haunting of Hill House" (2018) and "The Haunting of Bly Manor" (2020), I have also seen his latest film production, "Doctor Sleep" (2019) sequel to "The Shining"; these three works of Flanagan have seemed excellent to me, they are an extraordinary way to tell a horror story where other themes such as family dramas, love, guilt, redemption or faith has a lot of weight and I can even say that just the terror is a complement and not the main protagonist of the story, although of course it has a good weight, as it can be what attracts a large number of people.
En "Midnight Mass" veremos la historia de la pequeña comunidad pesquera que habita la Isla Crockett, una en la cual ha sido golpeada por diferentes situaciones que ha disminuido no solo su población sino el trabajo de los que se quedaron en la isla y a estos problemas generales de la Isla podemos sumar las diferentes problemáticas que padece cualquier familia y que alguna vez es difícil de enfrentar, pero no todo es malo en este lugar, ya que la fe en Dios, es lo que une a la mayoría de los habitantes, una fe que les da fuerza a seguir y enfrentar cualquier problema, pero está fe será puesta en prueba cuando llegue un nuevo padre uno que podrá o no traer la salvación completa a todos, transformando a cada uno de ellos a un solo ser uno que tal vez esté alejado de Dios.
In "Midnight Mass " we will see the story of the small fishing community that inhabits Crockett Island, one in which has been hit by different situations that has decreased not only its population but the work of those who stayed on the island and these general problems of the island we can add the different situations that any family suffers and that is sometimes difficult to face, But not everything is bad in this place, since faith in God is what unites most of the people on the island, a faith that gives them strength to continue and face any problem, but this faith will be put to the test when a new father arrives, one who may or may not bring complete salvation to all, transforming each one of them to a single being, one who may be far from God.
Esta es la miniserie que más esperaba ver en este año, Flanagan es un escritor que sabe cómo dar un punto exacto a una historia para que no solo se enfoque en las escenas de susto, ya que sabe cómo anexar aspecto real, situaciones reales y miedos reales para que cada uno de los espectadores nos podamos conectar con la historia; anteriormente en sus dos miniseries para Netflix, las historias estaban enfocadas una en un drama familiar, otra en "amores prohibidos" y sus consecuencias, en esta historia vemos que el primer tema lo vemos en algunos personajes que huyeron de la isla para no terminar como sus padres y que ahora regresan para ser parte de una isla que les da distancia a los errores cometidos, también vemos el amor, sin ninguna duda está también es una historia de amor, de relaciones prohibidas que podrán desencadenar situaciones lamentables, pero para mí el tema principal de esta historia está en el uso de la fe y la culpa, por ejemplo tres de sus personajes principales el motivo de regreso a la isla va más que nada por la culpa, de no poder alcanzar metas, por fallar y por creer que ahora puedan creerse valientes y enfrentar el pasado, pero también está la fe, una fe que pueda dar la religión o la fe que te da poder encontrar a alguien quien sea un verdadero apoyo, de ambas formas la fe será lo que usen para poder creer que existe una esperanza para encontrar algo mejor.
Ahora desde este punto de vista podemos ver el drama que enfrentan sus personajes y seguro preguntarán ¿Dónde está el terror en esta historia? Mi respuesta seguirá siendo la misma, la culpa y la fe desencadenará el terror en esta pequeña comunidad, la culpa que los hace regresar a su lugar de origen les da esperanza de poder hacer algo para superar ese sentimiento y a la vez les para ayudar a los más necesitados y es ahí en dónde la fe de tener una imagen salvadora es lo que causará que cada persona pierda la percepción de que es bueno o malo, solo por creer la palabra y actos de alguien quien cree que tiene la solución de todo y si hay algo que nos ha enseñado la historia de la humanidad, el seguir como borregos a alguien con poder del uso de la palabra nunca termina de buena forma, esto trae exclusión, paranoia, violencia, todo iniciado por creer, por tener fe de las acciones de una sola persona sin saber cuál es su verdadero propósito.
This is the miniseries that I was most looking forward to see this year, Flanagan is a writer who knows how to give an exact point to a story so that it is not only focused on the scary scenes, he knows how to attach real aspect, real situations and real fears so that each of the viewers we can connect with the story; previously in his two miniseries for Netflix, the stories were focused one in a family drama, another in "forbidden loves" and its consequences, in this story we see that the first theme we see in some characters who fled the island to not end up like their parents and now return to be part of an island that gives them distance to the mistakes made, we also see the love, without any doubt this is also a story of love, forbidden relationships that may trigger unfortunate situations, but for me the main theme of this story is in the use of faith and guilt, for example three of its main characters the reason for returning to the island is mostly because of guilt, of not being able to achieve goals, for failing and for believing that now they can believe they are brave and face the past, but there is also faith, a faith that can give religion or the faith that gives you to find someone who is a true support, in both ways faith will be what they use to believe that there is hope to find something better.
Now from this point of view we can see the drama faced by its characters and you will surely ask where is the terror in this story? My answer will remain the same, guilt and faith will trigger the terror in this small community, the guilt that makes them return to their place of origin gives them hope that they can do something to overcome that feeling and at the same time to help those in need and that is where the faith of having a saving image is what will cause each person to lose the perception of what is good or bad, just by believing the word and acts of someone who believes he has the solution to everything and if there is something that the history of mankind has taught us, following like sheep to someone with the power of the use of the word never ends well, this brings exclusion, paranoia, violence, all started by believing, by having faith in the actions of a single person without knowing what their true purpose is.
Está historia es contada desde muchos puntos de vista, yo me quedo con lo que pienso es que son sus tres personajes principales, "Erin Greene" interpretado por Kate Siegel, "Riley Flynn" interpretado por Zach Gilford y el "Padre Paul Hill" quien lo interpreta Hamish Linklater; entre ellos tres hay un gran peso de la historia, entre ellos podemos ver el drama de tener una vida llena de derrotas y lo que puede causar, en ellos vemos la necesidad de comenzar una nueva etapa dejando atrás lo que alguna vez fueron y a la vez veremos cómo unos saben cómo ayudar a otros y otros solo los usarán para querer sentirse salvador. Creo que no estaría bien si no hablo de Samantha Sloyan como "Bev Keane" y Rahul Kohli como el sheriff "Hassan el-Shabazz", yo a ambos personajes los encuentro parecidos en que ninguno es respetado por algunas de las personas de esta isla, ambos son muy religiosos, para mí son importantes personajes, necesarios para contar una realidad que se sigue viviendo en el mundo actual y es que no tengo ninguna duda de que los personajes que hacen vida en esta historia, todos están bien escritos y muy bien actuados, todos son impresionantes.
This story is told from many points of view, I will stick with what I think are its three main characters, "Erin Greene" played by Kate Siegel, "Riley Flynn" played by Zach Gilford and "Father Paul Hill" who is played by Hamish Linklater; between the three of them there is a great weight of the story, between them we can see the drama of having a life full of defeats and what it can cause, in them we see the need to start a new stage leaving behind what they once were and at the same time we will see how some know how to help others and others will only use them to want to feel savior. I think it would not be right if I do not talk about Samantha Sloyan as "Bev Keane" and Rahul Kohli as the sheriff "Hassan el-Shabazz", I find both characters similar in that neither is respected by some of the people of this island, both are very religious, for me they are important characters, necessary to tell a reality that is still living in today's world and I have no doubt that the characters that make life in this story, all are well written and very well acted, all are impressive.
Al momento en que comenzó la promoción de esta miniserie, decidí no ver ninguna entrevista, ningún tráiler, solo quería sentarme y disfrutar de esta historia, tenía grandes expectativas y no me importó no saber absolutamente nada, vi el tráiler justamente cuando termine de ver sus 7 episodios y me gustó que no se revelará nada, esto lo digo porque quería sorprenderme y no porque la historia fuera algo en dónde deberían pensar más de lo debido, creo que esto es lo que más me gusta de esta historia, todo está ahí desde un comienzo, los temas, el drama y el terror; me gusta el uso de los pasajes bíblicos los cuales en la boca de los personajes creyentes creo que se demuestra como la fe en las personas equivocadas puede ser una arma letal, un arma que podrá acabar con un grupo de personas en vez de dar salvación. Sin ninguna duda que la historia, las actuaciones, la dirección es algo que impresiona, me gustó mucho todo lo que ofrece y creo que es magnífica como las otras dos miniseries de Netflix hechas por Flanagan; solo me queda invitarlos a qué presencien tan buena historia, por cómo usa el terror supernatural, el sentimiento de culpa, la fe y la religión, para crear una historia trágica de un pueblo necesitado de milagros, no se queden sin ver Midnight Mass.
When the promotion of this miniseries started, I decided not to watch any interview, no trailer, I just wanted to sit down and enjoy this story, I had great expectations and I didn't mind not knowing absolutely nothing, I saw the trailer just when I finished watching its 7 episodes and I liked that nothing was revealed, I say this because I wanted to be surprised and not because the story was something where they should think more than they should, I think this is what I like most about this story, everything is there from the beginning, the themes, the drama and the terror; I like the use of biblical passages which in the mouths of the believing characters I think show how faith in the wrong people can be a lethal weapon, a weapon that can kill a group of people instead of giving salvation. Without any doubt that the story, the performances, the direction is something that impresses, I really liked everything it offers and I think it is magnificent as the other two Netflix miniseries made by Flanagan; I can only invite you to witness such a good story, for how it uses supernatural terror, the feeling of guilt, faith and religion, to create a tragic story of a people in need of miracles, do not stay without seeing Midnight Mass.
