Mary Shelly es hija de padres escritores con mentalidad liberal en cuanto al papel de la mujer en la sociedad por parte de la madre y de la política por parte del padre. Además vive en un hogar donde a pesar de ser querida por su padre y hermanos, es maltratada por su madrastra quien constantemente hace referencia de manera despótica sobre su madre.

En vista de esa misma situación, su padre la envía lejos a casa de la familia Baxter, donde conoce a Isabel y posteriormente a Percy Bysshe Shelley, con quien establece de inmediato un vínculo romántico. Este fue el ambiente propicio para que su talento fuera incubando a su más famosa novela (Frankenstein). Algo que fue muy polémico en vista de que el género de la novela era algo controversial y más en las manos de una mujer. Hay mucho más con respecto a esto, pero tienes que ver la película, no te adelantaré más.
A pesar de tener un pensamiento liberal alimentado por la vida y relación de sus padres, Mary Shelly se encuentra en una encrucijada moral, cuando le toca a ella misma vivir según los preceptos que creía defender. Por tal motivo ella es echada por su padre, a quien ella consideró hipócrita pues parecía comportarse de forma contraria a las ideas que
pensaba ella que defendía.
Más adelante ella misma es cuestionada cuando se siente herida y traicionada por el estilo de vida por el que había sido echada lejos de su familia. A pesar de su pensamiento contrario a la época era una joven noble y leal a su pareja. Tuvo muchas situaciones duras en su vida desde su niñez con la muerte de su madre y la vida con una madrastra que la despreciaba, pero esto no fue todo. Al parecer el sufrimiento fue parte de su vida. De hecho, eso es lo más interesante porque de eso se trata su famosa novela, ya lo verás.
En esta película no solo se ven dramas sociales sino también dramas familiares y cómo se cuestionan las creencias y convicciones cuando es a uno mismo que les toca vivir.
