How nice it feels to see a movie that you didn't know existed, one that I got while searching through the endless list of titles that exist in streaming sites; in this case in Prime Video, from Amazon, which has some interesting titles especially when it comes to European films. In this opportunity I chose one just for its 7.9 on IMDB, French, period, I didn't even read the synopsis and it ended up being spectacular, endless emotions went through my mind while watching it, I didn't see it with any expectations and it turned out to be an excellent discovery.

*Le Bal de Folles" or The Mad Women's Ball, revolves around Eugénie, a 26-year-old bourgeois woman who has the gift of talking to spirits, a gift that in the late nineteenth century was seen as witchcraft or described as madness, so when her family discovers what happens, they decide to commit her to a neurological hospital Pitié Salpétrière, directed by Dr. Charcot in the company of the corps of nurses, and where stands out the head nurse Geneviève, who becomes an incredible help to Eugénie during her stay in that hell. Charcot in the company of the corps of nurses, and where the head nurse Geneviève, who becomes an incredible help to Eugénie during her stay in that hell, stands out.

I could say a thousand things about all the cinematographic work done by Mélanie Laurent, who in addition to directing and co-starring, adapted the screenplay with Chris Deslandes from the novel of the same name by Victoria Mas. A story that tells us a reality that the women interned in these sanatoriums lived, where everything related to psychiatry was a mere test.

When I started watching the film I thought I was going to see a strong drama associated with a bourgeois family in Paris, maybe with some romance in between, then I started to notice that Eugénie was different, and I started to see the hints of empowerment that she had, and I said: this is a feminist film, let's see where it takes us, soon she started to suffer from panic attacks (I know them well, so I knew they were this) but these attacks were triggered when spirits started to contact her, and I thought it would be a film that would revolve around Eugénie's power but from a realistic perspective, and it was like that. .. Until I saw where that gift was going when her family decided to leave her in that place.

It was pretty rough for me to watch this movie and not identify with it, and to see how modern psychiatry has evolved and still see all the way to go. It was almost impossible not to put myself in the shoes of many of these women, to not wonder what would happen to me if I was going through what I am going through now at that time, would my family have sent me to a psychiatric clinic just for not being able to control my emotions, or for wanting to scream at everyone at some point, or for locking myself in my room for days and not wanting to see anyone's face? Most likely I would have been, and maybe they would have put me in a hydrotherapy bathtub (a bathtub covered and filled with ice).

There is something I must also highlight, and that is the magnificent performance of the two main actresses: Lou de Laâge who plays Eugénie and whom I had seen in The Innocents; a French film, based on the post World War II era, which tells the story of a convent in which most of the nuns are pregnant, and which I highly recommend. Eugénie, as I said before, is a bourgeois woman, and like all of them, with a strong character because they grew up in an environment in which they did not have to lift a finger and in which she exercised her strong character before her servants, and then she is changed in the world, in which she must show herself "naked" in front of others and begin to fend for herself but without losing her identity. An incredible and quite convincing performance from this actress.

And of course, I can not fail to mention Mélanie Laurent, who is already well known to us in the world of cinema, we have seen her in recent films such as "Oxygen", or an older but part of one of the most iconic scenes of cinema, as she is Shoshana, from Inglourious Basterds. In this opportunity, she plays the head nurse of the clinic, and as her position deserves, she is strong and very devoted to her work and her family, she treats her patients well, although at the beginning I thought she was going to give headaches and impede Eugénie's progress, she immediately proved to be the opposite.

While it is true that the world has changed, there are still sequels of that time, no one wanted to know that they were going through psychiatric problems for fear of ending up confined in places like that, we even know of cases of people who locked up their relatives so that no one would know that they suffered from a mental illness. But to all this we also add what happened to "women like her"; a woman with a vestige of being different was condemned to years of confinement in these institutes just to keep up appearances. However, one thing that stands out in this film is the word sorority, that hand that we get from other women, that hand that makes us strong when we are together when we help each other and that overcomes any masters. I loved that the film was not about love but sisterhood, about getting an unexpected light and although we see heartbreaking scenes of mistreatment and abuse (physical and sexual) committed by those who thought they should help us, we can also see how even in the last instances, there will always be a helping hand to count on.

I share with you the trailer, and I hope that at some point you will be able to see this amazing movie.
