There have been numerous productions that have been made about the Holocaust and tell us in a crude way the events and vicissitudes that the prisoners had to suffer in this war that had a balance of more than 6 million Jews in the search for racial extermination.
Francisco Boix was one of those prisoners. In the Spain of the 40s, Franco rose to power and consequently his ultra-rightist ideas made a nod to Hitler's National Socialist ideas. Boix was on the left, a sin in both Nazi Germany and Franco's Spain, and at the age of 20 he was taken to an extermination camp in Mauthausen.
This story is raw, real, and with an explosive dramatic charge. In Mauthausen the living conditions were very poor, condemning the prisoners to the worst humiliations and forced labor rarely seen. The cruelty of the Nazis and the agony of the prisoners are omnipresent throughout this work, forcing our eyes to witness one of the worst war crimes in history.
Han sido numerosas las producciones que se han hecho sobre el holocausto que nos cuentan de manera cruda los sucesos y vicisitudes que tuvieron que padecer los prisioneros en esta guerra que tuvo un saldo de más de 6 millones de judíos en la búsqueda de un exterminio racial.
Francisco Boix fue uno esos prisioneros. En la España de los años 40, Franco se alzó con el poder y por consiguiente sus ideas ultra derechistas que le hacían un guiño a las ideas nacionalsocialistas de Hitler. Boix era de izquierdas, un pecado tanto en la Alemania Nazi como en la España Franquista y a sus 20 años es llevado a un campo de exterminio en MautHausen.
Esta historia es cruda, real y con una carga dramática explosiva. En Mauthausen las condiciones de vida eran paupérrimas, condenando a los prisioneros a las peores humillaciones y trabajos forzados pocas veces visto. La crueldad de los nazis y la agonía de los presos son omnipresentes en toda esta obra, forzando a nuestra vista a presenciar uno de los peores crímenes de guerra de la historia.
Boix had a background in photography and an incredible ability for languages, which made him privileged compared to other prisoners, subsequently gaining the trust of his boss Paul Rieken, a Nazi obsessed with capturing the essence of death in concentration camps.
What we will witness throughout this shoot is egregious and outrageous. The basic rights of life are non-existent and physical and psychological torture is the daily bread but Francisco Boix was determined to get hold of some negatives that would be a crude testimony of the atrocities carried out in Mauthausen. Arming their courage and managing to ally themselves with different prisoners, they begin a hunt to get hold of the negatives, creating different distraction strategies.
Boix tenía conocimientos en fotografía y una habilidad increíble para los idiomas lo que le convirtió en un privilegiado frente a otros prisioneros ganándose posteriormente la confianza de su jefe Paul Rieken, un nazi obsesionado con capturar la esencia de la muerte en los campos de concentración.
Lo que presenciaremos durante todo este rodaje es atroz e indignante. Los derechos básicos de vida son inexistentes y la tortura física y psicológica es el pan de cada día pero Francisco Boix estaba decidido a hacerse con unos negativos que serían un crudo testimonio de las atrocidades hechas en Mauthausen. Armándose de valor y consiguiendo aliarse con diferentes prisioneros empiezan una cacería para hacerse con los negativos, creando diferentes estrategias de distracción.
This is the main focus or goal of this character who fights for these negatives but while he achieves them, he observes the entire process of annihilation, humiliation and agony of the prisoners and also the sadism on the part of the Nazis in Mauthausen.
It would be difficult for many to believe that humans can carry out such atrocities and thanks to people like Francisco Boix there is enough documentation to show the world all these facts and the limits of human barbarism, something that should never be repeated.
Este es el foco o meta principal de este personaje que lucha por esos negativos pero mientras los consigue observa todo el proceso de aniquilación, humillación y agonía de los prisioneros y también del sadismo por parte de los nazis en Mauthausen.
Sería difícil de creer para muchos que el humano puede llegar a realizar semejantes atrocidades y gracias a personas como Francisco Boix hay suficiente documentación para mostrar al mundo de todos estos hechos y de los límites de la barbarie humana, cosa que no debería de repetirse jamás.
Among my favorite film genres, the war has always been present because it shows us that dark and realistic face of what we, as humanity can become by giving ourselves that slap we need to change everything we are currently doing twisted.
Titles like The Pianist, Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan, can leave a mark on our head. They are films that aim to show us the war in its most raw and bestial aspect possible but also teach us about the purposes of making a change, the inexorable fight accompanied by a nightmare that apparently had no end.
These productions have put us in the shoes of many heroes and in the case of the photographer from Mauthausen, Boix is one of the best of them because he did not rescue anyone in particular but he did rescue a key piece to teach us the terror and nightmares lived by many in Nazi Germany.
Entre mis géneros cinematográficos favoritos siempre ha estado el bélico presente porque nos muestra esa cara oscura y realista de lo que nosotros como humanidad podemos llegar a ser dándonos esa cachetada que necesitamos para cambiar todo lo torcido que estamos actualmente haciendo.
Títulos como El pianista, La lista de Schindler o Salvando al Soldado Ryan, pueden dejarnos una marca en nuestra cabeza. Son películas que tienen como propósito mostrarnos la guerra en su aspecto más crudo y bestial posible pero también nos enseñan acerca de los propósitos por hacer un cambio, la lucha inexorable acompañada de una pesadilla que aparentemente no tenía fin.
Estas producciones nos han puesto en la piel de muchos héroes y en el caso del fotógrafo de Mauthausen, Boix es uno de los mejores de ellos porque no rescato a nadie en específico pero rescato una pieza clave para enseñarnos el terror y las pesadillas vividas por muchos en la Alemania Nazi.
Besides the story and the script, the photography for this production is impressive and the performances memorable. Mario Casas, who played Francisco Boix, had to lose more than 10 kilos to do it with more realism, something that actors who truly give themselves to history like Christian Bayle in The Machinist have done.
The film is showed to us in German and Spanish and perhaps the fact that the film is based on Spaniards who lived through these events makes us feel more familiar and therefore achieve more empathy with the prisoners.
This film fulfills its objective to spare, it is a production that pays tribute to a hero like
Francisco Boix, despite all adversities, fulfills his purpose thanks to his courage and his convictions. This is not exactly a movie to watch as a family but rather to take an introspective journey after seeing it. After the shock that many of the most violent scenes produce in us, we will be able to understand much more about this dark side of humanity and it will make us feel more empathetic for those who have suffered this barbarism, not only in Nazi Germany but in the war in general.
Fuera de la historia y el guion, la fotografía de esta producción es impresionante y las actuaciones memorables. Mario Casas quien interpreto a Francisco Boix tuvo que adelgazar más de 10 kilos para realizarla con más realismo, cosa que han hecho actores que se entregan verdaderamente a la historia como Christian Bayle en El Maquinista.
La película se nos presenta en alemán y español y quizás el hecho de que la película este basada en españoles que vivieron estos sucesos haga que nosotros nos sintamos más familiarizados y por ende conseguir más empatía con los presos.
Esta película cumple con su objetivo de sobra, es una producción que le rinde tributo a un héroe como Francisco Boix que a pesar de todas las adversidades cumple con su propósito gracias a la valentía y a sus convicciones. Esta no es precisamente una película para ver en familia sino más bien para hacer un viaje introspectivo después de verla. Luego de la conmoción que nos produzcan muchas de las escenas más violentas podremos entender mucho más sobre este lado oscuro de la humanidad y nos hará sentir más empáticos por los han sufrido esta barbarie, no solo en la Alemania nazi sino en la guerra en general.
We tend to focus on WWII as Nazi barbarism without also striving for the barbarism promoted by Stalin in the Soviet Union towards his own people. I would also like to see that other cruel side of history that has not been propagandized as much as the fearsome Nazis.
In conclusion, a memorable movie. One of those productions that will leave us a blow to our hearts, with scenes that are difficult to digest but with such an impact that it will not leave us indifferent. The Mauthausen photographer met all my expectations and is a film that I would recommend with my eyes closed.
Solemos enfocarnos en la segunda guerra mundial como la barbarie nazi sin hacer también ahínco en la barbarie fomentada por Stalin en la Unión Soviética hacia su propio pueblo. Me gustaría también ver ese otro lado cruel de la historia al que no se le ha hecho tanta propaganda como a los temibles nazis.
En conclusión, una película memorable. Una de esas producciones que nos dejara un golpe en nuestro corazón, con escenas difíciles de digerir pero con un impacto tal que no nos dejara indiferentes. El fotógrafo de Mauthausen cumplió todas mis expectativas y es una película que recomendaría con los ojos cerrados.
