Well I told you in my previous review that the month of February is my perfect excuse to bring you romantic movies 🤣, and today I bring you one of the movies that undoubtedly occupies a place in my list of favorites, it was recommended to me a few years ago and as soon as I saw it I loved it, so much so that I have repeated it several times, to be more specific I see it every year at this time and for that reason obviously I had to tell you about it, so without further ado today's review goes to He's Just Not That Into You 💕.
This romantic comedy was released on February 6, 2009, directed by Ken Kwapis and distributed by New Line Cinema, is based on the book of the same name written by Liz Tuccillo and Greg Behrendt. The plot focuses on several stories and all revolve around love and the complications it brings; Mary (Drew Barrymor) is trapped by technology and internet dating and has been unable to maintain a real and meaningful relationship with someone; Janine (Jennifer Connelly) finds herself in a marriage that has succumbed to monotony and where it is more exciting to renovate the house than the marriage itself; Beth (Jennifer Aniston) has been in a stable relationship for 7 years and although she has wanted to take the next step and get married, her partner refuses the idea as he doesn't think it's necessary; Anna (Scarlett Johansson) has unexpectedly met a man who has captivated her but unfortunately he is married, while on the other hand she has someone in love with her but to whom she pays no attention; and finally we have Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin) the hopeless romantic who is obsessed with finding her soul mate and sees that with every man she dates.
As I said at the beginning, this is one of my favourite films and I can watch it a lot of times and enjoy it as the first time, honestly of all the couples the one that I consider healthier is Beth and Neil (Ben Affleck), because they really are a well established couple who respected and supported each other, their crisis comes from Neil's lack of interest in marriage, however it was not an opposition marked by machismo or lack of commitment, In fact, during the film it shows the reality that marriages often present and in a way gives you as a viewer to understand that in a certain sense Neil's position is quite acceptable and even reasonable, and shows you the other side of the coin, which is Beth and Neil's relationship, that without being married they are really a couple with love and respect.
Of the characters that stressed me the most during the movie, we have Gigi and Janine, but let's talk first about Janine because with her the thing is serious, I really liked her ending but not the way to get there, to begin with I didn't understand her obsession with the issue of whether her husband smoked or not, or the reason why this issue was more triggering for their separation than the other fact happened with her husband (which I won't say because I don't know if it's spoiler or not 🤣), also their whole marriage was built on pressure, she pressured her husband to get married and didn't let it happen because he really wanted to, and since they give you that information in the story you already know that it will end badly because it started badly, and for this reason and her bad advice 🤣, is that Janine is not my favourite female character. Now, the issue with Gigi also goes through the issue of intensity, and she is so obsessed with the idea of finding a partner that at least for me it is quite overwhelming, however and although she stresses me a lot in some moments of the plot, I find her story very nice 🤣 and she is one of those who has more screen time (in fact the film begins with her) and that somehow makes you empathize a lot with her and her part of the plot.
I feel that the least developed story was Mary's and I think it had a lot of potential, even so it also has parts in scene that are quite good except when she gives advice 🤣🤣, as for Anna I also consider that she had an excellent ending, she needed it so she could find herself and give all her attention to her career and her projects, also at the time when she had to give her place she did it without hesitation and that was super gratifying to see. As for the men I must say that the most hated for me was Ben, of all the times I've seen the film I always come to the same conclusion, I find him a macho and unpleasant man with little courage to face certain situations but with a lot of desire to talk bad about marriage 😠.
One aspect that I must mention that I didn't like a lot or didn't have much coherence, is the way in which certain characters meet and become friends, and I'm talking about two pairs of characters in particular, because I feel that it is unrealistic how this happens, besides the denouement that they gave to Neil and Beth seemed a little unnecessary, I think they had already given a good final argument and they damaged it with that last action so unlikely of Neil, Another denouement that although I saw coming, I felt that I lacked more development from the male character, was the dynamic between Gigi and Alex (Justin Long), because at a certain point I felt that the ending was very rushed, like you never see the clear signs that something is changing in Alex and that leads to the aforementioned.
