My opinion
The good, the bad and the smart.
It is a film with deep character development. Three of them are male characters, so it's set in a man's world.

Philp is the bad guy, although in reality a story like this, dealing with the ups and downs of a stormy life, is too complex to place adjectives of good or bad. Philp is tough, tough, sarcastic, cruel, but deep down it's all a shell, because inside he hides his true self, a man who has had a repressed sexuality for years and that everything he does to assert his masculinity to the world, is really a facade.
Peter, the smart one, the fish out of water. The boy who was born in the wrong era.
