I believe that The Last Duel has been a film that has not received all the attention it deserves from the public. I feel that it has gone unnoticed, surely some have been carried away by some bad opinion or perhaps new viewers are no longer prepared to admire a work that is the product of the union of great talents, a precise script and a story that deserves all our attention. I saw it a couple of nights ago and for more than two hours I was transfixed, enjoying every detail of another excellent film released this year, a spectacular year! When I make my list, this film will be included. I invite you to read the whole post, I want to convince you to see the movie, in case you overlooked it.

Siento que ha pasado desapercibida, seguramente algunos se han dejado llevar por alguna mala opinión o quizás los nuevos espectadores ya no están preparados para admirar una obra que es producto de la unión de grandes talentos, un guion preciso y una historia que merece toda nuestra atención. La vi hace un par de noches y durante más de dos horas me quedé paralizado, disfrutando de cada detalle de otra excelente película estrenada este año, ¡un año espectacular! The film is directed by Ridley Scott, a filmmaker who needs no introduction, if you are a lover of the seventh art you know very well who he is. I'm not going to recite here all his filmography or his successes, this is not wikipedia. I will only tell you that he is currently 84 years old, that he has created several masterpieces of cinema and that, like Eastwood, he does not want to rest. On the contrary, he is still busy on several projects. He is a man of cinema, who lives to make movies and this time he makes an incredible epic staging, with two hours that lead us to an exciting ending, where we do not know what is going to happen.
He should not rest, he should not retire, he should continue making films, with the same passion and energy as his first films. Besides, one of his sons is following in his father's footsteps. The Scott family name will continue to offer great cinematographic works in the future. There is no doubt about that.
Fans of historical dramas will enjoy this film a lot, maybe there are people who don't like films set in medieval times. But let's remember that the filmmaker managed to bring back the limelight to the great Roman films with the classic Gladiator. That's why I regret that The Last Duel has not had so much repercussion. It was presented at the Venice Film Festival out of competition and so far it has received some Satellite Award nominations in technical categories. My God, it's been 24 years since these two young actors won the Oscar as screenwriters of the famous movie Good Will Hunting. I watched that award ceremony and I remember the emotion of both of them when they picked up the award. How sad it makes me remember that movie, because Robin Williams worked with them. Every time I remember a movie with Williams I can't help but feel bad, because of the way he left this world.
Damon and Affleck work together again writing the screenplay for The Last Duel, along with a third screenwriter: Nicole Holofcener. You can tell the script has been carefully crafted, from the narrative structure I'll explain below. They may not win any awards this time, but they prove that they still have the screenwriting talent that launched them to worldwide fame.
The book
It is not an original screenplay, it is an adaptation of the book written by Eric Jager, an American scholar, specialized in medieval history, so there are many details that the screenwriters had to take care to adapt and the filmmaker captures them in very raw images, with all the lifestyle of the time. I have not read any of Jager's books, but he seems to be an expert writer and researcher on the medieval subject. Sólo te diré que actualmente tiene 84 años, que ha creado varias obras maestras del cine y que, como Eastwood, no quiere descansar. Al contrario, sigue ocupado en varios proyectos. Es un hombre de cine, que vive para hacer películas y esta vez hace una puesta en escena épica increíble, con dos horas que nos llevan a un final emocionante, donde no sabemos qué va a pasar.
Que no descanse, que no se retire, que siga haciendo cine, con la misma pasión y energía que sus primeras películas. Además, uno de sus hijos está siguiendo los pasos de su padre. El apellido Scott seguirá ofreciendo grandes obras cinematográficas en el futuro. De eso no hay duda.
Los fans de los dramas históricos disfrutarán mucho con esta película, quizá haya gente a la que no le gusten las películas ambientadas en la época medieval. Pero recordemos que el cineasta consiguió devolver el protagonismo a las grandes películas romanas con el clásico Gladiator. Por eso lamento que El último duelo no haya tenido tanta repercusión. Se presentó en el Festival de Venecia fuera de concurso y de momento ha recibido algunas nominaciones a los Satellite Awards en categorías técnicas. Esperemos a que comiencen las nominaciones a los grandes premios, para ver si queda en el olvido o si entra en la contienda.

What is the plot of The Last Duel?
In the middle of the 14th century, when France was ruled by King Charles VI, a monarch who would eventually lose his sanity at a very young age. Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris are two squires of the French troops, both are good friends and Jean even saved Jacques' life in one of the many battles they had with the enemy armies. Opinion
The last duel left me very satisfied, the introduction of the film, which begins with the preparations for the duel and that first lunge captured my full attention. It immediately made me feel that I was watching an ambitious production in the style of the movies that fascinate me, that style of epic productions that are now difficult to make. Hollywood prefers to go the easy route of sagas, sequels, remakes and a lot of entertaining but empty productions.
On the contrary, this Ridley Scott production portrays a historical era that deserves that we pay attention to the context in which the story takes place in order to understand that deeply religious medieval era, where the civilized world was ruled by Kings who believed themselves to be what they were, by divine right, and a people full of shortages, where social castes were of vital importance.
With the 14th century as a backdrop, the story of friendship, betrayal and hatred of these two men is narrated. Each of them full of pride, where honor was something of great importance for those who came from respected families, but which teaches us how power can corrupt anyone, blinding him and making him commit a heinous act, which will bring deadly repercussions.
Something that is also made very clear and becomes more important as the film progresses, is the position of women in that society, which had nothing civilized, for me it was a time plagued by ignorance and savagery. But above all, it was a time when women were mere objects, when it didn't matter what happened to them, it was a man's world and they only had to serve as good wives, to keep silent, to bear everything that could happen to them.
Before the final third of the film, the character of Jean's mother says to Marguerite some heartbreaking words, for all the meaning they have. She confesses to him that she too was young, that she too went through a similar situation, but that she chose to go on living, keeping silent and avoiding disgrace for her family. Marguerite replies that the price she paid was very high. A lapidary sentence that made me reflect. Although I identified with Marguerite, I felt sorry for the other character. How many women have had to keep silent? How many injustices have been committed throughout history because they kept silent? But at the same time I wondered, can she be blamed? Can she be reproached? In the end, human beings act out of survival instinct, so I understood the two different points of view, both correct. Some are braver than others and perhaps it is those brave ones, with their actions, who change history, but at the risk of their lives. What would you do?

El último duelo me dejó muy satisfecho, la introducción de la película, que comienza con los preparativos del duelo y esa primera estocada captó toda mi atención. Inmediatamente me hizo sentir que estaba viendo una producción ambiciosa al estilo de las películas que me fascinan, ese estilo de producciones épicas que ahora son difíciles de hacer. Hollywood prefiere ir por el camino fácil de las sagas, secuelas, remakes y un montón de producciones entretenidas pero vacías.
Por el contrario, esta producción de Ridley Scott retrata una época histórica que merece que prestemos atención al contexto en el que se desarrolla la historia para entender esa época medieval profundamente religiosa, donde el mundo civilizado estaba gobernado por Reyes que se creían lo que eran, por derecho divino, y un pueblo lleno de carencias, donde las castas sociales eran de vital importancia.
Con el siglo XIV como telón de fondo, se narra la historia de amistad, traición y odio de estos dos hombres. Cada uno de ellos lleno de orgullo, donde el honor era algo de gran importancia para aquellos que provenían de familias respetadas, pero que nos enseña cómo el poder puede corromper a cualquiera, cegándolo y haciéndole cometer un acto atroz, que traerá repercusiones mortales.
Algo que también se deja muy claro y cobra mayor importancia a medida que avanza la película, es la posición de la mujer en aquella sociedad, que no tenía nada de civilizada, para mí era una época plagada de ignorancia y salvajismo. Pero sobre todo una época en la que la mujer era un mero objeto, en la que no importaba lo que le ocurriera, era un mundo de hombres y ellas sólo tenían que servir de buenas esposas, guardar silencio, soportar todo lo que les pudiera ocurrir.
Antes del tercio final de la película, el personaje de la madre de Jean le dice a Marguerite unas palabras desgarradoras, por todo el significado que tienen. Le confiesa que ella también fue joven, que también pasó por una situación similar, pero que eligió seguir viviendo, guardando silencio y evitando la desgracia para su familia. Marguerite le responde que el precio que pagó fue muy alto. Frase lapidaria que me hizo reflexionar. Aunque me identifiqué con Marguerite, me dio pena el otro personaje. ¿Cuántas mujeres han tenido que callar? ¿Cuántas injusticias se han cometido a lo largo de la historia porque ellas callaron? Pero al mismo tiempo me preguntaba, ¿se la puede culpar? ¿Se le puede reprochar? The lie and the truth
With a good command of technique, we are presented with 3 versions of the same story, each with a different point of view. It is here where the director masterfully handles every detail, so that we can see the different versions, with small variations, depending on who narrates them. Details that are very important, so that we can draw our conclusions and at a given moment, we know for sure who is lying and who is telling the truth. Because it is the struggle of one of the characters to have his truth heard, no matter the price he has to pay. A truth that we, as viewers, will question. Is he lying or telling the truth? The answer to this question is what kept me waiting, I needed to know the truth.
The structure
To tell the story, both the screenwriters and the filmmakers have opted for a fragmented narrative in 3 major flashbacks, each of which gives the point of view of the events of the 3 main characters. It is not something new, I think that since the 50's, with Kurosawa's Rashomon, this resource has been used many times, for example Tarantino is another who has used it for certain sequences in some of his films. Although the narrative resource is nothing new, I have always felt a strong attraction for stories told in this way.
This may be what has not appealed to some viewers, who want a linear story, told in an easy way, where they don't have to think too much. The final duel is simple to understand, but lately people seem to be losing interest in trying a little too hard. The film shows us three versions of events, before returning to the beginning, where the battle that gives the film its title takes place. At that point we already know the whole truth, so we are on the side of one of the opponents. The question is: will that side be the winner?

Con un buen dominio de la técnica, se nos presentan 3 versiones de la misma historia, cada una con un punto de vista diferente. Es aquí donde el realizador maneja con maestría cada detalle, para que podamos ver las diferentes versiones, con pequeñas variaciones, dependiendo de quien las narre. Detalles que son muy importantes, para que podamos sacar nuestras conclusiones y en un momento dado, sepamos con certeza quién miente y quién dice la verdad. Porque es la lucha de uno de los personajes para que su verdad sea escuchada, sin importar el precio que tenga que pagar. Una verdad que nosotros, como espectadores, cuestionaremos. ¿Miente o dice la verdad? La respuesta a esta pregunta es lo que me hizo esperar, necesitaba saber la verdad.
La estructura
Para contar la historia, tanto los guionistas como los realizadores han optado por una narración fragmentada en 3 grandes flashbacks, cada uno de los cuales da el punto de vista de los acontecimientos de los 3 personajes principales. No es algo nuevo, creo que desde los años 50, con la obra Rashomon de Kurosawa, se ha utilizado este recurso muchas veces, por ejemplo Tarantino es otro que lo ha utilizado para ciertas secuencias en algunas de sus películas. Aunque el recurso narrativo no es nada nuevo, siempre he sentido una fuerte atracción por las historias contadas de esta manera.
Esto puede ser lo que no haya atraído a algunos espectadores, que quieren una historia lineal, contada de forma fácil, en la que no tengan que pensar demasiado. El último duelo es sencillo de entender, pero últimamente parece que la gente está perdiendo el interés en esforzarse un poco. La película nos muestra tres versiones de los hechos, antes de volver al principio, donde tiene lugar la batalla que da título a la película. En ese momento ya conocemos toda la verdad, por lo que estamos del lado de uno de los contrincantes. La pregunta es: ¿será ese bando el ganador?
Jean de Carrouges' version

Which character we will identify with, for when the final duel arrives, it will be a torrent of emotions, where anything can happen. A duel that keeps us glued to the seat, because of the savagery that is shown. Blood and death very raw, before the suffering eyes of Marguerite, whose life is also at stake, thinking about her son and the fate he will have, with a gruesome death, in case Jean is defeated. What the movie tells, as well as the book on which it is based, happened in real life. There are many theories about what is true and what is false about the event that caused the duel between the two men. The film has elements of fiction and shows us a possible truth. The only thing that is known for certain is that it was the last duel that took place in France, since the laws were modified and eliminated this type of acts for the resolution of conflicts. I advise you not to search anything on the internet, until you see the movie, because if you find information of the real facts, you will swallow a big spoiler. La primera que se nos cuenta y que ocupa gran parte del metraje, conoceremos a los personajes principales, todo ello desde su punto de vista. Un hombre leal, que piensa que el honor y servir a su Rey es lo más importante. Pero que se siente humillado, por no ser tenido en cuenta como se merece. Es un hombre de costumbres toscas, no es un soldado muy culto, pero confió en la amistad de Jacques, por lo que la supuesta traición será lo que manche su honor, el orgullo lo llevará al límite. Poniendo en riesgo la vida de su mujer, que será asesinada de forma atroz, en caso de que su marido pierda el duelo.
La versión de Jacques Le Gris
Estima a su amigo Jean, incluso habla en su nombre con el Conde, pero este hombre de origen humilde, pero que logró estudiar cuando intentó ser religioso, pronto se verá cegado por los beneficios que obtendrá al ser la mano derecha del Conde. Sangre y muerte muy crudas, ante los ojos sufrientes de Marguerite, cuya vida también está en juego, pensando en su hijo y en el destino que tendrá, con una muerte espantosa, en caso de que Jean sea derrotado. ¿Qué crees que pasará?

Matt Damon plays Jean de Carrouges, another great performance by the actor, starring in another film written by him. Just like in his beginnings. In the final part is when he stands out the most, in the middle of that bloody battle, where the life of his whole family is at risk. An excellent job by the actor.
Adam Driver plays Jacques Le Gris, one of the actors of the moment, he gets into the skin of Jean's best friend whom circumstances turn into enemies, until so much accumulated hatred and envy, on both sides, leads to an unfortunate event, where death is the only solution.
Jodie Comer plays Marguerite de Carrouges. The actress is fantastic. She has experience in playing historical characters, although many know her for being the funny murderess in the series Killing Eve. In this film she is fascinating and her version of events was the one I was most looking forward to seeing, because she is the one who gives us the answers. I really enjoyed her work, I hope she enters the supporting actress competition, I think she deserves it and her career is constantly evolving. I also saw her recently in the movie Free Guy.
Ben Affleck plays Count Pierre d'Alençon, a corrupt and lecherous man. I loved Affleck's performance, it's a supporting role, but I found his look and what he does to be a fun character. According to an interview, he was supposed to play Jacques, but due to scheduling issues, he had to play this other character. It would have been great to see the two real life friends and screenwriters of the film, star in The Last Duel.
Matt Damon interpreta a Jean de Carrouges, otra gran actuación del actor, protagonizando otra película escrita por él. Al igual que en sus inicios. En la parte final es cuando más destaca, en medio de esa sangrienta batalla, donde la vida de toda su familia está en riesgo. Un excelente trabajo del actor.

Tiene experiencia en interpretar personajes históricos, aunque muchos la conocen por ser la divertida asesina de la serie Killing Eve. En esta película está fascinante y su versión de los hechos era la que más ganas tenía de ver, porque es la que nos da las respuestas. Me ha gustado mucho su trabajo, espero que entre en la competición de actrices de reparto, creo que se lo merece y su carrera está en constante evolución. También la vi recientemente en la película Free Guy.
Ben Affleck interpreta al Conde Pierre d'Alençon, un hombre corrupto y lujurioso. Me encantó la actuación de Affleck, es un papel secundario, pero su aspecto y lo que hace me pareció un personaje divertido. Según una entrevista, se suponía que iba a interpretar a Jacques, pero por problemas de agenda, tuvo que interpretar a este otro personaje. The Last Duel is an excellent film that I highly recommend seeing. Talented people came together to tell us this story that takes the opportunity to make us reflect on a very current issue. The storytelling is great, Ridley Scott is still very energetic in his directing and does not disappoint. The film is over two hours long, but for me the time passed quickly and I didn't stop paying attention. It influences that I'm a fan of the director and the actors. Jamie Comer has already made me fall in love with her in other productions, but here she is fabulous. Another film that I include among the best of this year.

El último duelo es una película excelente que recomiendo encarecidamente ver. Gente con talento se unió para contarnos esta historia que aprovecha para hacernos reflexionar sobre un tema muy actual. La narración es genial, Ridley Scott sigue con mucha energía dirigiendo y no decepciona. La película dura más de dos horas, pero para mí el tiempo pasó rápido y no dejé de prestar atención. Influye que soy fan del director y de los actores. Jamie Comer ya me ha enamorado en otras producciones, pero aquí está fabulosa. Otra película que incluyo entre las mejores de este año.
