Opioids are a big problem, especially in the United States. Not only because of the addictive power of these drugs and their deadly health effects. Also because it represents a million-dollar business for those who produce these drugs.
You have probably heard of Fentanyl. This synthetic drug has become very famous because of the Dantesque images spread in the media and social networks. They call it the Zombie drug, because people are left looking like the walking dead. The effects can be deadly, many people have died.
A couple of months ago I saw a video of Zazza the Italian, youtuber who frequents the most dangerous areas of the countries. In his visit to America he was able to see how fatal is the use of Fentanyl and he showed us a fragment of that sad reality that nobody is going to show off in his nice tourist pictures on social networks.
What is the point of all this? The movie Pain Hustlers tackles the issue of fentanyl, adapting an article and a novel by writer Evan Hughes. It's all inspired by real events. Specifically the case of Insys Therapeutics and its Indian-origin founder John Kapoor. Los opiáceos representan un gran problema, especialmente en Estados Unidos. No sólo por el poder adictivo de este tipo de medicamentos y sus efectos mortales para la salud. También porque representa un negocio millonario para quienes producen estos fármacos.
Seguramente habrás oído hablar del Fentanilo. Esta droga sintética se ha hecho muy famosa por las dantescas imágenes difundidas en los medios de comunicación y redes sociales. La llaman la droga Zombie, porque la gente queda como un muerto viviente. Los efectos pueden ser mortales, muchas personas han muerto.
Hace un par de meses vi un video de Zazza el italiano, youtuber que frecuenta las zonas más peligrosas de los países. En su visita a América pudo comprobar lo fatal que es el uso del Fentanilo y nos mostró un fragmento de esa triste realidad que nadie va a presumir en sus bonitas fotos turísticas en las redes sociales.
¿Qué sentido tiene todo esto? La película Pain Hustlers aborda el tema del fentanilo, adaptando un artículo y una novela del escritor Evan Hughes. Todo está inspirado en hechos reales. This is not an accurate representation of the facts. The names of companies, products and people involved have been changed. Characters have also been invented that did not exist in the real case, such as the protagonist Liza Drake, whose screenwriter Wells Tower seems to have been inspired by Erin Brocovich to shape her and falls halfway.
The whole film falls halfway flat. Chris Evans and Emily Blunt sn the hook, but it's not enough. Not even Andy Garcia manages to make the billionaire business owner believable. At times it seems to try to hook with a black humor that didn't even bring a smile to my face. Nor does it delve as deeply as it should into the apparatus of corruption that is the healthcare system and pharmaceutical companies.
I am not a big fan of director David Yates. His most important works have been his work on the Harry Potter saga and the subsequent films in that universe. In them he has done a good job according to the type of story, but here you can see how uncreative and risky he is when it comes to approaching a story that should be more serious. A direction that at times seems like an old made-for-TV or direct-to-DVD movie, as in the old days. If it weren't for the famous Hollywood actors in it, very few people would see the film.
Emily Blunt is fabulous, as always. She was the only reason I could make it through to the end of this movie. The middle of the film may be entertaining, but then I realized it wasn't looking to go any further, baring the whole truth. I was watching the clock for it to end soon. By the way, today I saw the trailer of another movie with Emily Blunt : The Fall Guy, with the handsome Ryan Gosling, I hope that one will be really entertaining.

También se han inventado personajes que no existían en el caso real, como el de la protagonista Liza Drake, cuyo guionista Wells Tower parece haberse inspirado en Erin Brocovich para darle forma y se queda a medias.
Toda la película se queda a medio camino. Chris Evans y Emily Blunt sn el gancho, pero no es suficiente. Ni siquiera Andy García consigue hacer creíble la figura del millonario dueño de la empresa. Por momentos parece intentar enganchar con un humor negro que ni siquiera me sacó una sonrisa. Tampoco profundiza todo lo que debiera en el aparato de corrupción que es el sistema sanitario y las empresas farmacéuticas.
No soy un gran fan del director David Yates. Sus obras más importantes han sido su trabajo en la saga de Harry Potter y las posteriores películas de ese universo. En ellas ha hecho un buen trabajo acorde al tipo de historia, pero aquí se nota lo poco creativo y arriesgado que es a la hora de abordar una historia que debería ser más seria. Una dirección que por momentos parece una vieja película hecha para televisión o directa a DVD, como antaño. Si no fuera por los famosos actores de Hollywood que aparecen en ella, muy poca gente vería la película.
Emily Blunt está fabulosa, como siempre. Ella fue la única razón por la que pude llegar hasta el final de esta película. La mitad del film puede ser entretenido, pero después me di cuenta de que no buscaba ir más allá, desnudando toda la verdad. Estaba mirando el reloj para que terminara pronto. Por cierto, hoy he visto el trailer de otra película con Emily Blunt : The Fall Guy, con el guapo de Ryan Gosling, espero que esa sea realmente entretenida.
Pain Hustler attempts to be a film that denounces the vile attitude of pharmaceutical companies, failing in tone, pacing and message. It's not fair to reduce it all to the overweening ambition of the company owner. There are more responsible for all this. The message of the film is very left-wing, like all of Hollywood. The bad guys are the rich, even those who were accomplices and acted only out of ambition, can receive less sentences and then live the American dream as if nothing had happened. A speech too pamphletary for my taste.
Where there is corruption there is a society of accomplices. It is not only the owners of the companies, their greedy executives and doctors who lend themselves to it. Politicians, health organizations and health care workers are also responsible. It is all a network. The film only shows the most obvious and hides the most rotten parts. If you want to see a movie about corruption in one area of the US healthcare system, I recommend the independent film Body Brokers that I reviewed a couple of years ago.
Everything is a business. Healthcare cannot escape it. From first world countries to the poorest, the system is corrupt. In my country, mired in poverty and backwardness, we see unimaginable things. From the upper echelons, doctors, nurses, to the cleaning staff. The system is full of unscrupulous and unethical people, vermin who play with the pain and lives of the needy. So, although I didn't like the movie very much, I recommend it for those who are interested and want to investigate the real facts.

Pain Hustler intenta ser una película que denuncia la vil actitud de las empresas farmacéuticas, fallando en el ritmo y el mensaje. No es justo reducirlo todo a la ambición desmedida del propietario de la empresa. Hay más responsables de todo esto. El mensaje de la película es muy de izquierdas, como todo Hollywood. Los malos son los ricos, incluso los que fueron cómplices y actuaron sólo por ambición, pueden recibir menos condenas y luego vivir el sueño americano como si nada hubiera pasado. Un discurso demasiado panfletario para mi gusto.
Donde hay corrupción hay una sociedad de cómplices. No sólo se prestan a ella los dueños de las empresas, sus codiciosos ejecutivos y los médicos. También hay responsabilidades en los políticos, en las organizaciones sanitarias, en los trabajadores de ese sector. Todo es una red. La película sólo muestra lo más evidente y oculta las partes más podridas. Si quiere ver una película sobre la corrupción en un área del sistema sanitario estadounidense, le recomiendo la película independiente Body Brokers que reseñé hace un par de años.
Todo es un negocio. La sanidad no puede escapar a ello. Desde los países del primer mundo hasta los más pobres, el sistema es corrupto. En mi país, sumido en la pobreza y el atraso, vemos cosas inimaginables. Desde las altas esferas, médicos, enfermeras, hasta el personal de limpieza. El sistema está lleno de gente sin escrúpulos ni ética, alimañas que juegan con el dolor y la vida de los más necesitados. Así que, aunque la película no me gustó mucho, la recomiendo para aquellos que estén interesados y quieran investigar los hechos reales.
