Last night I finished watching the new miniseries created by one of the filmmakers who has achieved commercial and audience success in the horror genre. A miniseries that I really wanted to see, because I have followed the director's career and I like most of his films and series. He returns to work with his wife, who has a lead character, a director who has made several back-to-back hits for Netflix: Mike Flanagan.

The premiere and success of The Haunting of Hill House gave him carte blanche and creative freedom for the following projects, in which he would continue to stomp, confirming that he is a director with a personal stamp, making another mini-series that was again acclaimed by critics and the good reception of the public: The Haunting of Bly Manor. Midnight Mass is the new production of Flanagan, who writes with his group of screenwriters and is in charge of directing the seven episodes that make up the miniseries. The successful creator introduces himself in a subject he knows very well, religion, especially the Catholic religion, since he was raised as a Catholic, something that seems to have caused him a trauma since childhood, since the message and the speeches he introduces in this production may hurt the sensitivity of very religious people.
In this interview that I recommend reading, he explains the whole creative process and the years he had in mind to bring this idea. About five years ago, it was surely impossible for someone to risk financing this project, but as he is now an established author, he has the doors open to do whatever he wants. When I address my opinion in depth, I will start with the negative aspects, first I will briefly talk about the story that Flanagan has created and whose shooting was interrupted by the covid, it had to wait a few months and finish it under strict biosecurity protocols for the cast and crew.

What is the plot of Midnight Mass?
Crockett Island consists of less than 130 inhabitants, the main economic source is fishing, but for years everything has been in decline. My opinion
I want to start with the negative: the length of the miniseries. The story consists of seven episodes, but to me, a lover of slow-paced stories that use time to develop characters, it seemed to me that Flanagan could have spared a couple of chapters, the usual ones that are left out to include scenes with an excess of long speeches with apparent religious depth.
I repeat, Flanagan had to be very marked in his time as an altar boy in a New York congregation, because he spends a lot of time in religious discussions, with biblical passages included, dissertations and confrontations between defenders of the faith and non-believing characters, in addition to all the typical rituals of the Catholic religion.
I believe that Flanagan, with a free hand to do whatever he wants, has made a product that serves to bring out all those demons he had stored up because of his Catholic upbringing. It has taken him a while to develop this project for a reason.
It is palpable, as the episodes go by, that unlike previous productions, there is a more personal message in the story. That is why the first two episodes seem to me to be extremely difficult to endure for many viewers. The director is taking a risk, from my point of view it's positive, but I haven't read or know anything about how the acceptance of the mini series has been in the general public. Because you have to be patient, it is in the third episode when Flanagan gives his masterstroke.
From that moment on is that the story picks up the pace, revelations occur, to show the terrifying side of what we are being told, with a couple of cliffhangers that will leave us breathless and afifth episode with one of the most poetic closings I've seen lately on television.
Guilty - forgiveness - redemption - sacrifice.
These are recurring themes in the director's productions. Guilt for past deeds, which haunts several of the characters. Forgiveness, as a form of power, expressed in the confrontation between the victims, dead or alive. Redemption, as the only way to make peace with the terrible events of the past, and sacrifice, in this case both for love and to save humanity from a terrible tragedy.
Midnight Mass has everything described above, but there are no more haunted houses or ghosts, although Riley has visions of the girl who died because of him. This time the terror takes the form of a fallen angel, as well as human nature fanaticized by a religion, which makes the terror more real and deadly.

Quiero empezar por lo negativo: la duración de la miniserie. La historia consta de siete episodios, pero a mí, amante de las historias de ritmo lento que utilizan el tiempo para desarrollar los personajes, me pareció que Flanagan podría haberse ahorrado un par de capítulos, los habituales que se dejan de lado por incluir escenas con exceso de largos discursos con una aparente profundidad religiosa.
Repito, Flanagan tuvo que estar muy marcado en su época de monaguillo en una congregación de Nueva York, porque pasa mucho tiempo en discusiones religiosas, con pasajes bíblicos incluidos, disertaciones y enfrentamientos entre defensores de la fe y personajes no creyentes, además de todos los rituales típicos de la religión católica.
Creo que Flanagan, con mano libre para hacer lo que quiera, ha hecho un producto que sirve para sacar todos esos demonios que tenía almacenados por su educación católica. Por algo ha tardado en desarrollar este proyecto.

Por eso los dos primeros episodios me parecen que serán extremadamente difíciles de soportar para muchos espectadores. El director se arriesga, desde mi punto de vista es positivo, pero no he leído ni sé nada de cómo ha sido la aceptación de la mini serie en el público general. Porque hay que tener paciencia, es en el tercer episodio cuando Flanagan da su golpe maestro.
A partir de ese momento es que la historia acelera el ritmo, se producen revelaciones, para mostrar el lado terrorífico de lo que nos están contando, con un par de cliffhangers que nos dejarán sin aliento y un quinto episodio con uno de los cierres más poéticos que he visto últimamente en televisión.
Culpa, perdón, redención, sacrificio.
Son temas recurrentes en las producciones del director. La culpa por los hechos del pasado, que persigue a varios de los personajes. El perdón, como forma de poder, expresado en el enfrentamiento entre las víctimas, vivas o muertas. La redención, como única forma de hacer las paces con los terribles sucesos del pasado, y el sacrificio, en este caso tanto por amor como para salvar a la humanidad de una terrible tragedia.
Midnight Mass tiene todo lo descrito anteriormente, pero ya no hay casas encantadas ni fantasmas, aunque Riley tiene visiones de la chica que murió por su culpa. The episodes are named after several of the books that make up the bible, the filmmaker has really been inspired by this millennial book to create this microcosm of society, enclosed on an island, where we will see the consequences of taking certain beliefs to too dangerous extremes.

The rebirth, the resurrection, the hope of healing the island, a new life for the inhabitants, a new opportunity, salvation and eternal life, will quickly turn into pandemonium, death and the biblical apocalypse will begin on this island of few inhabitants.
A love story
Behind all the religious and horror context, there are actually several love stories. Just as the director did in Bly Manor, there are several plots that show us beautiful love stories.
Although there is good and evil, plus both are present in the story, but even the characters that we can see doing terrible things, they do it because they believe it is for the good of the island, of the world.
It is difficult to judge the actions of the characters, even when collective madness is unleashed, because they all believe that they have been chosen by God to do vile acts, but that they will be granted forgiveness and rewarded with eternal life. Totally absorbed in an erroneous idea, they will commit horrible acts, but thinking that they are doing good. Is it really God who has manifested himself? Is that angel savior an envoy of God? By the time the main man responsible for bringing the apocalypse to the island realizes his mistake, it may be too late. It is in that part where the beautiful scenes will make us feel guilt, redemption, sacrifice and finally love.

Do I recommend watching it?
Totally. I already told you what the negative element of this story is, you might have a hard time getting into it during the first two episodes. But when the chips are placed on the board, everything changes and Flanagan makes a display of talent to get us into this religious nightmare, where no one is safe and where life and hope, will be swept away by death and madness.
I personally love these stories where the characters are manipulated by their beliefs. If you have read my old reviews of movies, series or documentaries with similar themes, you know that I do not believe in anything, I am a person without religion, but I am fascinated to study the behavior of human beings who are immersed in such ancient ideas and beliefs, which can transform them and lead them down the path of madness.
¿Recomiendo verla?
Totalmente. Ya les dije cual es el elemento negativo de esta historia, quizás te cueste entrar en ella durante los dos primeros episodios. Pero cuando las fichas son puestas en el tablero, todo cambia y Flanagan hace un despliegue de talento para meternos en esta pesadilla religiosa, donde nadie está seguro y donde la vida y esperanza, será arrasado por la muerte y la locura.
A mí personalmente me encantan estas historias donde los personajes son manipulados por sus creencias. Si has leído mis viejas reseñas a películas, series o documentales con temas similares, sabes que yo no creo en nada, soy una persona sin religión, pero me fascina estudiar el comportamiento del ser humano que está inmerso en unas ideas y creencias tan antiguas, que pueden transformarlos y llevarlos por el camino de la locura.
The characters / Los personajes
There are too many characters, to name them all would be too long this publication, but I will explain the main ones and especially one of them that deserves an award.
Riley Flinn is the tormented character, the man who left the island, was economically successful, but because of drunk driving, he killed a young girl in an accident. He had to go to prison and now returns to the island, to be with his parents and younger brother, but the guilt still haunts him. He needs redemption, but fate has worse in store for him. The character is played by Zach Gilford and although he is the hero of the story, he will do something that will leave us with our jaws unhinged.
Erin Greene, is back on the island, four weeks pregnant, she is teaching at the school, seeing her friend Riley again, will make her remember the past and maybe the love between them will be reborn. Riley loves her, is something that will make it very clear, in one of the most beautiful and sad scenes of the mini-series. This character is the true protagonist of the story, and is played by Kete Siegel, who we have seen in Flanagan's previous productions because she is also his wife. She is an actress I like, she has not let me down in any of her previous works and here she is again perfect in her role.
Sarah Gunning, the only doctor on the Island, who is taking care of her mother who has senile dementia, is the scientist who will join Erin to try to stop the madness that is happening on the Island. She is the fruit of a past love, a secret that her mother and another of the characters has kept for years. Fruit of a forbidden love, she will be a vital part in the end of the story. She is played by the always excellent Annabeth Gish.
Father Paul, the new priest who is determined to change everyone on the island, has energy, his speech enters into the highly religious population and the miracles of healing will make everyone follow him blindly. He does not want evil for anyone, he only wants to do good, but he is not who he says he is and he will keep his true identity secret. He will also be a victim of his own beliefs. Who is Father Paul? That's something that will surprise you. Just as I was surprised by Hamish Linklater's performance, in what may be the best character of his career.
Bev Keane, the priest's assistant, fervent devotee, believer and ally, will soon discover Father Paul's big secret, but she will become his right-hand woman. She will support him, she is a crazed woman, an extreme religious fanatic willing to do anything to keep Paul safe and fulfill God's designs. She is an incredible character, one of the best developed and the performance of actress Samantha Sloyan is superb. I'm telling you now, this actress deserves an award for this performance.

La Docotora Sarah Gunning, la única medico en la Isla, que está cuidando a su madre que tiene demencia senil, es la científica que se unirá a Erin para intentar frenar la locura que está ocurriendo en la Isla. Ella es el fruto de un amor de pasado, un secreto que su madre y otro de los personajes ha guardado por años. Fruto de un amor prohibido , sera parte vital en el final de la historia. Es interpretada por la siempre excelente Annabeth Gish.
El Padre Paul, el nuevo sacerdote que esta decidió a cambiar a todos en la Isla, tiene energía, su discurso entra dentro de la población sumamente religiosa y los milagros de sanación harán que todos lo sigan de forma ciega. El no quiere el mal para nadie, el solo quiere hacer el bien, pero no es quien dice ser y mantendrá en secreto su verdadera identidad. También sera un victima de su propias creencias. ¿Quien es el Padre Paul? Es algo que te sorprenderá. Asi como me sorprendió la actuación de Hamish Linklater, en el que puede ser el mejor personaje de su carrera.
Bev Keane, la asistente del sacerdote, ferviente devota, creyente y aliada, pronto descubrirá el gran secreto del Padre Paul, pero se convertirá en su mano derecha. Ella lo apoyara, es una mujer enloquecida, fanática religiosa extrema dispuesta a hacer lo que sea para mantener seguro a Paul y cumplir los designios de Dios. I liked Midnight Mass. Flanagan does it again. For me, it is another good production with his personal brand, but a more human context. Of course the fantasy and supernatural is present, which we have seen in other horror classics. Actually, when we find out what the supernatural is about, it's something we've seen many times. Although I can't say it's Flanagan's best because there are many scenes that are left over and can tire the viewer, when the story focuses on the horror is when it shows the best.
I only ask you to watch until the third episode, there you will be hooked and as I told you, the closing chapter 4 is beautiful. The most beautiful act of love I've seen on TV this year, even the screams of Erin's character in that scene echo in my mind. An unforgettable scene, where love, forgiveness and sacrifice go hand in hand.

Midnight Mass me ha gustado. Flanagan lo vuelve a hacer. Para mí, es otra buena producción con su marca personal , pero un contexto más humano. Por supuesto que está presente la fantasía y lo sobrenatural, que hemos visto en otros clásicos del terror. En realidad, cuando descubrimos de qué trata lo sobrenatural, es algo que hemos visto muchas veces. Aunque no puedo decir que es lo mejor de Flanagan porque hay muchas escenas que sobran y pueden cansar al espectador, cuando la historia se enfoca en el terror es que eleva el interés.
Solo les pido que vean hasta el tercer episodio, allí quedaran enganchados y como les dije, el cierre el capitulo 4 es bello. El más hermoso acto de amor que he visto en Tv este año, aun los gritos de personaje de Erin en esa escena resuenan en mi mente. Una escena inolvidable, donde el amor, el perdón y el sacrificio se dan la mano.
