My previous review was of a French film of the drama and comedy genre starring a very famous actress. Now, I continue with French cinema, but this time with the horror genre and starring unknown actresses. But those who do have a well-earned prestige are the directors.

When a filmmaker's first film gets a remarkable critical and public acclaim, it will always be a constant expectation that the following works will be equal or superior, plus they will be compared, it is inevitable.
Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are a pair of filmmakers who broke through in 2007 with the extraordinary horror film À l'intérieur . Coinciding with the period in which prominent French directors of the genre stood out with their transgressive and extreme horror proposals, of which I have spoken on previous occasions.
À l'intérieur is still his best work and if you haven't seen it, you are missing a gem of French horror cinema. Grab your cell phone or go to your laptop and look it up immediately, if you're fascinated by horror, it's a must-see film.
They have made more horror films: Livide and Aux yeux des vivants were films that I enjoyed when they were released, although neither surpassed the first, they are good horror productions, where the directors insert their personal stamp to the plots of both films.
When a director earns my sympathy and they debut so strongly, rest assured that I will try to watch every new work they do, they may have ups and downs and not all projects will meet my expectations, but I will continue to support them, because at some point they will hit the nail on the head again.
They were the only reason I saw the unnecessary Leatherface movie. Which I thought was entertaining, but really wasn't necessary to show the origins of the horror icon that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre didn't give. It was a wise move by the producers to hire these two filmmakers to direct that story. There was no need for that film, but I thought the result was good.
Now they are making films again in France. First with Kandisha, the film I am going to review, a film that was part of the official competition selection at last year's Sitges Festival. The other film by the directors, is scheduled to be released this year, is called The Deep House and is about a house that hides a creature inside, but in addition, the house is at the bottom of the sea. An interesting proposal. Haunted houses sunk in the sea.
But this post is to talk about Kandisha, an unoriginal film, whose story does not really bring anything innovative within the genre and that may not be to everyone's taste, because it seems not to have a high budget, but it is worth seeing, for being inspired by an ancient Moroccan legend.

Han hecho más películas de terror: Livide y Aux yeux des vivants fueron películas que disfruté cuando se estrenaron, aunque ninguna superó a la primera, son buenas producciones de terror, donde los directores insertan su sello personal a las tramas de ambas películas.
Cuando un director se gana mi simpatía y debutan con tanta fuerza, tengan por seguro que trataré de ver cada nuevo trabajo que realicen, pueden tener altibajos y no todos los proyectos cumplirán con mis expectativas, pero los seguiré apoyando, porque en algún momento volverán a dar en el clavo.
Ellos fueron la única razón por la que vi la innecesaria película de Leatherface. Que me pareció entretenida, pero realmente no era necesaria para mostrar los orígenes del icono del terror que no dio La matanza de Texas. Fue un acierto de los productores contratar a estos dos cineastas para dirigir esa historia. No era necesaria esa película, pero el resultado me pareció bueno.
Ahora vuelven a hacer películas en Francia. Primero con Kandisha, la película que voy a reseñar, una película que formó parte de la selección oficial a concurso en el Festival de Sitges del año pasado. La otra película de los directores, está previsto que se estrene este año, se llama The Deep House y trata de una casa que esconde una criatura en su interior, pero además, la casa está en el fondo del mar. Una propuesta interesante. Casas encantadas hundidas en el mar.
Pero este post es para hablar de Kandisha, una película poco original, cuya historia no aporta realmente nada innovador dentro del género y que puede no ser del gusto de todos, porque parece no tener un alto presupuesto, pero que merece la pena ver, por estar inspirada en una antigua leyenda marroquí.
What is the plot of Kandisha?
Amélie, Morjan and Bintuo are young friends since they were kids, the three of them are dedicated to making graffiti around the neighborhoods where they live, which they sign as BAM, the initials of their names. It's summer and they're not in school, so they spend their time having fun, smoking weed, drinking and hanging out with their friends. But one night, after doing some graffiti, they see the name Kandisha written on a wall. One of them explains that it is Aisha Kandisha, an ancient Moroccan legend. That same night, Amélie is attacked by her ex-boyfriend. When she manages to free herself from the maniac in love, at home, she feels rage and unconsciously summons the spirit of Kandisha. The spirit of the legend has been invoked. Kandisha will kill six important men in the lives of the three friends. Who will be the fatal victims? How will these three girls be able to stop the curse? How can Kandisha be stopped? Will anyone be left alive to tell the tale?

My opinion
In the horror genre we have seen many similar stories about evil spirits, even in the popular culture of each country these legends exist. Many have been passed down from generation to generation and their origins go back centuries.
What is exotic about the film, and what is striking, is perhaps that it is inspired by a Moroccan legend, which I did not know.
From my point of view it is a minor film within the filmography of the directors. I have to admit that I liked all his previous films better. But it does not mean that Kandisha is a bad film, only that it has some shortcomings in the development of the story, which can make noise in the most demanding viewers or those who expect something similar to the first film of the directors.
Don't have such high expectations and I assure you that you will enjoy this simple horror story, in which an evil spirit will start killing the near and dear men of the three main girls.
The three protagonists make up a multicultural trio, the white French girl, the Afro-French girl and the other is of Arab descent. Three women who are at an age where they only think about having fun, dating a cute guy and enjoying their youth, will be forced to fight against a force from beyond, to protect their boyfriends, parents, siblings and friends, some will begin to die in strange circumstances and others will be savagely killed by Kandisha.
The deaths are the strong point of the film, with a relatively modest budget, some are well crafted and gave me the dose of gore I was expecting. Enough, not that they are extreme scenes, but they are raw kills and that may affect viewers who are not used to this kind of scenes. I was jumping with excitement with each death, each one was better than the other.
The portrayal of Kandisha was another factor that I liked, at first she is a female figure, who seems to have an attractive face, but as the deaths become more intense, she also shows more. We see how her body is transforming, she is getting taller, the face is changing and when we see her walking with her horse legs it is mind-blowing. I had a lot of fun watching it, it doesn't cause me terror, many of you who read me already know that.

En el género de terror hemos visto muchas historias similares sobre espíritus malignos, incluso en la cultura popular de cada país existen estas leyendas. Muchas se han transmitido de generación en generación y sus orígenes se remontan a siglos atrás.
Lo exótico de la película, y lo que llama la atención, es quizás que se inspira en una leyenda marroquí, que yo no conocía.
Desde mi punto de vista es una película menor dentro de la filmografía de los directores. He de reconocer que todas sus películas anteriores me han gustado más. Pero no quiere decir que Kandisha sea una mala película, sólo que tiene algunas carencias en el desarrollo de la historia, que pueden hacer ruido en los espectadores más exigentes o que esperan algo parecido a la primera película de los realizadores.
No tengas unas expectativas tan altas y les aseguro que disfrutaran de esta sencilla historia de terror, en la que un espíritu maligno empezará a matar a los hombres cercanos y queridos de las tres chicas protagonistas.
Las tres protagonistas conforman un trío multicultural, la chica blanca francesa, la afrofrancesa y la otra es de ascendencia árabe. Tres mujeres que están en una edad en la que sólo piensan en divertirse, salir con un chico guapo y disfrutar de su juventud, se verán obligadas a luchar contra una fuerza del más allá, para proteger a sus novios, padres, hermanos y amigos, algunos empezarán a morir en extrañas circunstancias y otras serán asesinados salvajemente por Kandisha.
Las muertes son el punto fuerte de la película, con un presupuesto relativamente modesto, algunas están bien elaboradas y me dieron la dosis de sangre que esperaba. Suficiente, no es que sean escenas extremas, pero si son muertes crudas y eso puede afectar a los espectadores que no estén acostumbrados a este tipo de escenas. Yo saltaba de emoción con cada muerte, cada una era mejor que la otra.
La representación de Kandisha fue otro factor que me gustó, al principio es una figura de mujer, que parece tener un rostro atractivo, pero a medida que las muertes se vuelven más intensas, también se muestra más. Vemos como su cuerpo se va transformando, se va haciendo más alta, la cara va cambiando y cuando la vemos caminar con sus patas de caballo es alucinante. Me divertí mucho viéndola, no me causa terror, muchos de los que me leen ya lo saben.
I also liked the setting in a multicultural neighborhood, giving it a modern and current touch. The story takes place in the present time and with many young characters, so there is urban music throughout the film.
The girls will get help from a member of a mosque, who knows an old man who knows how to stop Kandisha. There are only two ways, one is to do some sort of exorcism and the second is something very extreme. Which of the two ways will they choose to stop the death of their loved ones? I'm not going to tell you, but I can tell you that after that point the story becomes predictable.
If you are looking for something transgressive and very shocking, then don't watch the movie, because you will be left unsatisfied, you will say it's more of the same, etc. I don't think the filmmakers were looking for a big impact with the film, but I do think you can see some of their personal style, which ends up adding positive points. If you want to see a horror movie with good kills and have a good time, I recommend you to watch it.
Kandisha only kills men?
Yes, this demonic woman in the movie only kills men, the main girls are not in danger, but all the men close to them are. You might be thinking that this evil spirit is a feminist hahaha, but no, that is not the reason why Kandisha only kills and takes the souls of men. The explanation goes back to the original myth about the origin of the curse.
También me ha gustado la ambientación en un barrio multicultural, dándole un toque moderno y actual. La historia se desarrolla en la época actual y con muchos personajes jóvenes, por lo que hay música urbana durante toda la película.
Las chicas recibirán ayuda de un miembro de una mezquita, que conoce a un anciano que sabe cómo detener a Kandisha. Sólo hay dos formas, una es hacer una especie de exorcismo y la segunda es algo muy extremo. ¿Cuál de las dos formas eligirán para detener la muerte de sus seres queridos? No te lo voy a decir, pero sí te puedo decir que después de ese punto la historia se vuelve predecible.
Si buscas algo transgresor y muy impactante, entonces no veas la película, porque te quedarás insatisfecho, dirás que es más de lo mismo, etc. Tampoco creo que los realizadores buscaran impactar mucho con la película, pero sí que se nota algo de su estilo personal, que acaba sumando puntos positivos . Si quieres ver una película de terror con buenas muertes y pasar un buen rato, te recomiendo que la veas.
¿Kandisha sólo mata hombres?
Sí, esta mujer demoníaca de la película sólo mata hombres, las chicas protagonistas no corren peligro, pero sí todos los hombres cercanos a ellas. Estarás pensando que este espíritu maligno es feminista jajaja, pero no, esa no es la razón por la que Kandisha sólo asesina y toma las almas de los hombres. La explicación se remonta al mito original sobre el origen de la maldición.

Apparently, she was a woman who was raped and tortured by Portuguese soldiers in a region of Morocco and she made a pact with a demon, to use her beauty to take revenge and kill them all. In other countries there are similar legends and myths that always talk about a beautiful woman. For example in many Latin American countries is very famous the legend of La Llorona, which has had several film adaptations.
Sí, es algo que descubrí gracias a esta película. Me puse a buscar información en internet, donde hay bastante material para leer. Aisha Kandisha pertenece al folclore popular de Marruecos y hay diferentes historias y versiones, tanto de su lugar de origen, como de la forma que tiene. La mayoría coincide en que tiene el aspecto de una hermosa mujer, pero parte de su cuerpo tiene patas de caballo o de cabra. Al parecer, era una mujer que fue violada y torturada por soldados portugueses en una región de Marruecos y ella hizo un pacto con un demonio, para utilizar su belleza para vengarse y matarlos a todos. Esa es una de las explicaciones sobre su origen que se cuentan en la película, pero puedes leer más información en estas fuentes que he revisado para tener más conocimiento sobre este mito marroquí. Characters/ Personajes
The actors who play the characters are not very famous. For me most of them are unknown. The three main actresses play teenage girls very well and are very attractive.
Mathilde Lamusse plays Amélie, she lives with her parents and has a little brother. She does not have a very good relationship with her father, likes to smoke marijuana and hang out with her friends. The breakup of her relationship with her boyfriend and the subsequent attack she will suffer, will be the reason why she will invoke the force of evil that Kandisha represents. The actress has a short career and this year she will appear in the movie Une histoire d'amour et de désir.
** Suzy Bemba plays Bintou** who, thanks to her father's work, has been able to move into a nicer house. Los actores que interpretan los personajes no son muy famosos. Para mí la mayoría son desconocidos. Las tres actrices principales interpretan muy bien a las adolescentes y son muy atractivas.
Mathilde Lamusse interpreta a Amélie, vive con sus padres y tiene un hermano pequeño. No tiene muy buena relación con su padre, le gusta fumar marihuana y salir con sus amigos. La ruptura de su relación con su novio y el posterior ataque que sufrirá, será el motivo por el que invocará a la fuerza del mal que representa Kandisha. La actriz tiene una corta carrera y este año aparecerá en la película Une histoire d'amour et de désir.
Suzy Bemba interpreta a Bintou, que gracias al trabajo de su padre, ha podido mudarse a una casa más bonita. Es un personaje fuerte y, junto con sus dos amigas, luchará hasta el final para evitar que Kandisha haga daño a su padre. ¿Lo conseguirá? La actriz es desconocida y creo que este personaje fue su primer trabajo y actualmente tiene un papel recurrente en la serie francesa L'Opéra. Kandisha is the return of filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo to work in France, using as inspiration a legend of Moroccan culture, using the urban environment and a multicultural area, where class differences exist, to tell us a horror story not very original, but with their respective personal stamp, making an enjoyable product for fans of the genre and who like to see some good deaths.
It won't shock you much, but it's an acceptable film of the genre. Mind you, as I said before, the main characters are unknown actors and some scenes may be uncomfortable for the more sensitive ones. I hope you enjoy it and let me know what you thought of the movie.
Kandisha es el regreso de los cineastas Julien Maury y Alexandre Bustillo a trabajar en Francia, usando como inspiración una leyenda de la cultura marroquí, utilizando el entorno urbano y una zona multicultural, donde existen diferencias de clase, para contarnos una historia de terror no muy original, pero con su respectivo sello personal, haciendo un producto disfrutable para los fans del género y que les guste ver unas buenas muertes.
No te impactará mucho, pero es una película aceptable del genero. Eso sí, como he dicho antes, los protagonistas son actores desconocidos y algunas escenas pueden resultar incómodas para los más sensibles. Espero que la disfrutes y me digas que te ha parecido la película.
