How do I do my Film Reviews? / CINEMA OPINION [Eng - Esp]

This is not intended to be a guide or a way of how to publish a film review. I'm not a professional film critic, I'm just a person who likes to watch movies, TV series and I love everything related to the audiovisual world, that's why I want to explain it, especially to people who have told me that they don't dare to make a post about a movie they have seen. Everyone has seen some movie or TV series in their life, there is a great community on Hive: Movies & TV Shows where they can publish a post about movies. But some people always ask me that they don't know how to make them, since they post about other topics and don't want to make a mistake. It is for those users that I make this post, explaining my process to make my opinion review about movies.

English

It is very important for me to make clear that this is not a guide, I just want to express how I do my reviews, to serve as an example to new users who want to start writing about movies.

I respect the form and style that each one has, there are many users in the community that make fabulous film reviews, users that I follow, I read and I think they make better reviews than me, each one of them has their own style, their own creative process and I would love that they also share it with us.

I repeat: I am not an expert, just a movie lover who is on Hive, enjoying what he likes, watching movies, writing about them and sharing with other users who love to talk about this topic in the community.

I am a compulsive consumer of audiovisual productions. Sometimes I can watch four movies in a row, without any problem. I can also enjoy a full marathon of one or two series in a single weekend. Since I was a child I have been fascinated by moving images that I first saw on a television set and then on a movie screen. It has been my main hobby, my main avenue of entertainment, whatever you want to call it. I was one of those who preferred to stay at home watching a movie instead of going out to party. I'm a weirdo, I know hahaha and I recognize that I have strange tastes in selecting movies.

How do I do my posts about movies or series?

The main thing is that you enjoy what you do. If you liked the movie, I think you have a lot to tell. The positive aspects, the message you got out of the movie, what you learned, the experience of watching it, etc. Everyone should find what they found most important about the film to start writing about.

Do not read or watch other people's review videos.

This is very important. It's a rule I try to strictly follow. When I watch a movie that I plan to do a movie review on, I don't read or watch youtube videos of other people airing their opinion. Until I write and publish my movie review, I don't review anything done by others. why? I recently gave the answer to some friends in a conversation we had while recording a podcast. I don't want the words of others to influence me. I don't want the opinions of others, experts or amateurs, to remain in my subconscious and I may indirectly write something similar. I want my publication to be totally original, so I avoid listening to or reading other people's ideas before I issue my own point of view.

This is something I recommend to most people, especially those who are going to start writing about film for the first time. I think this suggestion can be very helpful. Caveat: this is just a suggestion of something I put into practice. I respect other people's way of doing it.

Don't tell the movie from beginning to end

What I'm going to say is my personal opinion: I don't like to be told the movie from beginning to end. I don't want to read a retelling of the whole story, let alone be told the ending. That's why I hate and don't read the reviews of the famous Roger Ebert. That pundit on the net, he tells the whole story, gutting everything, even the surprise twists, the ending, crazy. Are there people who like that? I don't know, but that critic is famous and I'm not. Hahaha

Answer the following question yourself: if they tell me the whole story of a movie, all the way to the end, what's the point of going to see it? One thing is a general summary of the whole story and another a movie review where you will give your opinion about what you have seen. Telling the whole movie in one post makes no sense and hurts many people's viewing. My suggestion is that you don't tell the whole story, avoid having everything be a narration of the story. That's why I just do my own synopsis to leave the reader wanting to go see the movie. Which brings us to the next point.

Make your own synopsis or explanation of the plot.

If you have seen a movie, why do you have to copy the synopsis from a website? I think it is better and adds more value to the publication, if you make your own synopsis or explain what the plot of the movie is about, and with the memories of what you saw. If you have seen it recently, you have fresher memories, so make your own synopsis, that's what I do. That way I create original content, in my own words, unique content that is unlike any other.

This also serves as a creative writing exercise. For example, select a movie you have seen and write three different synopses of the same movie. Invent, experiment, explain a little bit of the plot from the point of view of one of the characters, then write another one, but using the point of view or having the focus on the antagonist of the story, etc. This little suggestion I think is very useful, because it helps us to be creative and create really unique content for the platform.

Something I always add in the part where I explain the plot of the movie or series, is to leave questions: Will the hero be saved? Will they achieve the objectives? Who dies? Will they discover the murderer? Will they solve the mystery? Etc, the questions depend on the type of movie you are reviewing. This is something I do, to encourage the reader to watch the movie. It's something very personal, I'm not saying you have to do it this way, it's just to give you an idea to which you can make some variations and find your own style.

Give your opinion

This is the part where I go on the longest, those who have seen some of my publications, know that I overdo it in many occasions and they end up being very long. It is something I am trying to change, although it is part of the style I have developed over the years that I have been publishing on the platform, I think many do not read me because they see the post too long. I will make an effort to summarize my opinions a bit more, but I can't say for sure that I will succeed. Hahaha

Giving your opinion of the film is the most important thing for me, as a reader, I want to know your opinion, to read your point of view about a certain audiovisual production. Your impressions about the movie, beyond if you consider it good or bad, I want to know what was the message, what was the interpretation you gave to the message transmitted by the director of a movie. I want to know what you liked, what you didn't like, if you found it credible, if the story was coherent, if it was a mere entertainment product or if the production has a social message. The whole part where you express your opinion depends on the type of film you have seen and you do it in your own words, remembering in your mind the scenes that made an impact on you, the dialogues that stuck in your mind, etc. This is something very personal and everyone will have their own way of expressing it.

A hundred people can see a film and each one has a different point of view, each one can interpret the message in a different way, maybe some of them coincide in some aspects, but each person is unique and has a way of expressing himself and that is what I try to do when I write about a film.

In this influences a lot the personal experience of each person, the knowledge he/she has, etc. My only suggestion at this point is to express yourself in your own voice. You are giving your opinion, which is unique and therefore, your content will be unique and original.

Talk about actors, actresses, directors, etc.

This is something I do, but it's because I follow the careers of many directors and actors. But if you are a person who doesn't know the names of actors, directors, producers, etc., don't worry, don't broach that subject, it's the best you can do.

You can read some of my reviews and you will realize that when I don't know the career of a director or an actress, I say it, I'm not going to copy things from wikipedia. why? I want to create something original. If I haven't seen a director's previous films, I leave a link to IMDB for everyone to check or I also leave a link to a wikipedia article or a social network of the director, in case they are interested in researching more about him or her and look up his or her previous films.

Now, when I recognize an actor or director's name, I mention previous productions I've seen and if there's one I haven't seen yet, I mention it. It's not about being a walking library and knowing all the facts, but I try to pass on what my memory remembers.

I like this part, because I find it nice to remember in which movies or series I have seen the actor or actress, compare his or her performance in other movies and recommend some I liked. But if you don't feel like writing about the cast or director, don't do it. Writing about movies, for me, has to be as enjoyable as when I saw the movie. One of my rules is to write only about what I like.

The structure/ La estructura

lineahivedelgada.jpg

I don't have any suggestions on this, as it depends on the layout you use and the form you want to give to your publication. But I will explain what is the structure I follow in most of my reviews. But sometimes I make variations, to experiment and give it an attractive visual aspect (well, that's what I think).

As an example and see the structure I use to shape my movie posts, here is my review of the movie Stillwater

My movie reviews always start with a short introduction, where I talk about the director, the movies I've seen by that director, etc. I do this because I like it and based on what I remember, if you don't like this part and don't remember anything, well just don't write about it.

Depending on the type of movie or series, I may put everything in the context in which it takes place. But I always try to do an introduction.

The Plot

As I said in the part about explaining some of the plot, I focus on creating my own synopsis, leaving the reader wanting to see the movie. It's not telling the whole story, it's just explaining with my words the general plot.

My opinion

This is where I express all my opinions, good and bad, about the movie, what I thought, what could be improved, the interpretation I gave to the message of the movie. It will always be the longest part of my posts and where my thoughts and opinions will be expressed.

Cast

I usually add a part where I talk about the actors, because it is something that fascinates me. Maybe many will find this part boring, so I advise you to skip this part if you are not interested in knowing my opinions about the cast and the characters they play.

Final words.

I usually write the final thoughts to encourage the reader to find the movie and watch it. Especially if they are films from the independent film circuit, which fascinate me and I want to find people with the same tastes as me, so we can exchange ideas and opinions.

lineahivedelgada.jpg

I've been wanting to do a post explaining my process and how I do my film reviews for a while. It would be interesting if other users who write excellent film reviews, would be encouraged to express what their creative process is and how they elaborate their posts. I think it would help a lot to new users who want to write about movies, but still don't dare to do it.

I repeat, this post is only intended to explain what I do, not that others have to do it that way. Everyone has their own writing style and creative process, the wonderful thing about Hive is that you can write about what you like and sometimes experiment with topics you've never tackled before, so I hope this post will be useful for some users.

See you later!
